The Medicis, the Borgias, the Roveres, the Sforzas, the Estes...so many famous Italian dynasties!
The Borgias were from the Kingdom of Valencia, which is in Spain, but wasn’t unified yet. Italy wasn’t unified either. It was a bunch of city states. Hence a lot of these names were enemies of each other.
I would say that it’s fair to call them an Italian family, because Pope was based in Rome, and they were major players in the Italian renaissance.
Don't forget the Orsinis
The Da Varanos, Viscontis and the Farneses
The Corleones 😂 jk
They still live o😉😎. Change a couple vowels and?
From Royalty to Reality TV is quite a journey for a family to make over the centuries.
Ngl... having Caterina Sforza as a wife is a HUGE flex for that time. Not to mention the names of Orsini and Della Rovere popping up in their family tree as well is also quite impressive for the Italian Renaissance.
Caterina deserves her own video tbh.
Wasn't she the one who (when her enemies threatened to kill her children) called their bluff by saying "Go ahead! I have the instrument to make more!" and flashed them her lady bits?
@@janeyrevanescence12 the very one. They called her The Tiger of Forli for a reason.
@@janeyrevanescence12 yes lol
@@janeyrevanescence12 the story is said to be apocryphal, but yeah, it's attributed to Caterina. To think she managed to save her children by flashing her enemies and saying that it didn't matter if they killed them, because she could just give birth to more.
Perfect timing. I was looking for something to listen to while I crochet garlic bread (don't ask) and this popped up.
Now I need a tutorial to live the full experience
we’re in the same boat im crocheting lettuce rn 😔
I've got questions..... but in a similar vein, I was looking for something to listen to while I make chocolate chip cookies.... must be a baking day!
I suppose I must make brownies now
you can't just drop a phrase like "crochet garlic bread" and not expect us to be intrigued by this. how does one a) crochet bread products and b) what is your garlic bread recipe.
almost a million suds. I proud to say i was one of the oldest for 7 years love this chaneel with all my heart.
Same! This channel made me appreciate history✨💖
Omg the first vid I watched was Queens of England ang I cant believe its been 5 years🤧😩
Periodddd
@@Strawberrybaby-6same just finnished watching her earlier videos like the kings and Queens of England.
Im new to this channel can you suggest any videos please?
For a long time I thought the Medicis were completely extinct. I didn't even know that famous bloodline still exists today. What an eye opener!
It is very interesting to learn. I often wonder which famous bloodlines still exist in modern times, and which ones died out completely.
I thought he could be illegitimate child of medici that they don’t know about
@@Rae-Annechu he could very well be. I was a little skeptical about him since Lindsay said she couldn't find which Medici family branch he came from. But it wasn't unheard of for royal or aristocratic men to sleep around and have a bunch of illegitimate children running around 🤔.
So that's probably what happened with his ancestor lol 😅! Not to mention a possible genetic match with whatever bio material they picked up from previous ancestors if they did those open tomb investigations for whatever reason 🔎.
@@TheMeloettaful Oh you mean DNA test if he does it we know which one he descended from
@@TheMeloettafulthat would sure make a good video 📹 😊
“Woke up dead”
That made me giggle!
Me too 😂
Me three 😆 🤣 😂
YESSSSS!!! The Medici are my special interest and there aren’t many (good) videos on RUclips about them, and I loooooove your videos so this is perfect to me🥹🥹🥹
Hii! Do you have recommendations for medici books? The only one I've read so far is The Rise and Fall of the House of Medici by Christopher Hibbert!
I lived in Florence for a few months back in 2022, and it was the greatest time of my life. This video brings back very fond memories.
Yes!! I love the Medici history. They are absolutely ruthless and fascinating, with their schemes, rises and falls. The Italian power families are hours of real entertainment better than any fiction.
I love watching these videos while I bake. I’m getting a history lesson and making baked goods!
I WAS gonna bake some mini pecan muffins from Grandma Viola's Handcrafted Vittles (so good!) today but my dad changed his mind about going to some barbecue party and came back home. He has a bad habit of eating A LOT of certain things. And my muffins would have been a victim of that lol 😅.
I love making muffins but that day I decided to make some brownies and I added way too much chocolate!
‘ 7:36 “doesn’t mean they were banging” I coughed up my coffee lol
😆 🤣 😂
Man, I just hate it when I wake up dead like Poliziano and Pica de la Mirandola did
I am not an accountant but I think the invention of the double entry system is amazing! TIL something new!
You're almost at 1M and you deserve ALL of them Lindsay! You're the Queen of History! And we will get a video of your amazing trip to scotland?🎉🎉🎉👸👸👸👸👸
5 hours and there are 1k likes 🎉
I love watching these videos that link together different historical dramas for me; where I'm suddenly going OH that's the same person from (The Tudors, The Borgias, DaVincis Demons (yeah I know but I watched it), whatever) and it's like, aligning the timeline in my head as "all these things at the same time".
Ditto!
Thank you so much for covering this interesting family! The first Grand Duke Cosimo and his family became a recent interest after reading Elizabeth Loupas's books, so this was a real treat.
Also when you said poor Catherine got forgotten when Alessandro and Ippolito fled, I'm just imagining the pair looking at each other like 'I thought YOU had her!' Obviously it likely didn't, but it's a fun mental image 😋
Okay, I'm sorry but that mental image has me laughing. Obviously, those were some pretty terrifying times for the Medicis but imagining that scene is funny
Home alone style 😂
Always found the Medici’s fascinating. So glad you covered them in this video - you do such a great job explaining family trees.
I am so very proud to be an ITALIAN, and my ancestory is from SICILIA , and so i do feel the way that the SICILIANOS from the earlier times did feel
They were certainly an amazing family! You could probably do an extensive series on various members of the family. And I love seeing modern-day descendants of famous families. It makes for an interesting connection to the past!
Its midnight in the Philippines rn but almays waiting for your amazing videos.💟💟💟
Same ❤
Thank you for this video! Ever since the covid lockdown, I've been learning of royalty and nobility history out of boredom, and you are the main channel I'd watched!❤🎉
Also check out History Calling.
Not the tiny bit about double entry bookkkeeping from this video making my last 6months of accounting classes make sense....
Imagine my surprise when I went to look for a video here's tea time and not with just any family but the Medicis! Keep up the amazing work Lindsay 👏
This channel is my happy place thank you so much for everything you do to teach us about history
My pleasure
YES! this family is iconic! Thanks For covering them! LOVE youtr video on Catherine specially! You're the Best ❤❤❤❤❤
The actual head of the family today is Giuliano de' Medici di Ottajano, 14th Prince of Ottajano. He is the great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandnephew of Pope Leo XI and inherited his position after his father Giovanni passed away in 2015. The Lorenzo in the video is probably his younger brother. Giuliano is 49, turning 50 this year and Lorenzo is likely 48, as I came across an article about him from late 2019 saying he was 44.

Thank you so much for the additional information and the links 😊
Why do they claim Luisa was the last Medici?
@@lacecreationz2434 Because Anna Maria Luisa, Dowager Electress Palatine was the last living member of the Medici dynasty descended from Cosimo I, the second and last Duke of Florence and the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. So she was the last of the grand ducal line of the family, just not the family as a whole.
@@Edmonton-of2ec and yet here people are convinced she was the last Medici to ever live!
@@lacecreationz2434 It’s not surprising. Most people just don’t bother to check
Great work Lindsay. Could you kindly do a series of the French kings just like that of the English monarchs.
Try TheFrenchKings here on RUclips until Lindsay Holliday does her own series on the French kings.
Thanks. Lemme try it@@ChibiProwl
WOW, i was just thinking about how i would love a medici family tree video from you ❤❤❤❤
I’m going to Florence this year, I’m so glad you’ve made a video on them!
how perfect, i was JUST searching to see if you'd made anything about the medici's! you're such a treat of a channel.
I just came for the art, but wow, what a soap opera! If you lived beyond 30 you were doing good. Great channel. Great art. Subbed!
That was great! Perfect timing too I was just looking for Medici videos to watch
LOVE your history videos Lindsay! You're the best teacher there is! Than for all your hardwork! All those AI generated documentaries combined have NOTHING on you. And speaking of families can you please considering Covering the Trastamaras next? Hearth please.
One of my favorite channels to listen to getting ready for work and falling asleep
I always viewed the medicis as the far more benevolent counterpart to the Borgias - I now realise I was very much wrong after watching this video🤣🤣🤣
No multigenerational banking and/or merchant family can be described as anything close to benevolent lol
There are two current Lorenzo de Medici and both call themselves royalty. They assumed titles based on being close to some remote offspring, which is just dumb. The titles went to the Duke of Lorraine and therefore ultimately to the Habsburg family. There are no Medicis anymore and most certainly none with titles.
Great video, as always!
We need more people rich dynasties who patron the arts instead of destroying the world
na NAAA, MEDICIEKET SEM KELL FÉLTENI, RENGETEG GYILKOSSÁG ÉS HÁBORU SZÁRAD RAJTUK, PÁRTFOGÁSUK TELJESEN ÖNCÉLU VOLT ETC.
Wow - just wow! Brilliant video, unbelievable history.
Yayy! Finally you made a video about the Medici family! I think I remember requesting this in the past❤
Favorite channel. Most calming voice. Amazing history lessons. ❤
Through Charles II, his grandmother Marie de' Medici (25:50) is my 11x great grandmother!
Absolutely top notch video. Thanks.
I also do wish that I could have lived in the times when my ancestors lived, especially in the 13/14 th centuries, and how much would i have enjoyed the experience, but alas the times have now become passé
Love your videos! Always get excited for some messy royal history 🤣!
This is my favorite royalty, nobility channel ❤
Lindsey finds worthy and interesting topics and narrates very well.
Thanks for the video Lindsay
I love watching history videos that my grandma would not want me to pay attention to, I'm gonna quiz her on this just because
Just arrived from Florence. Medicis' history is amazing. Thanks for the program.
1:35 pretty sure their penchant for sponsoring artists was spurred on by the desire of never ever again being painted in the way good old de Bicci was
Pls do a video on the descendants of that Italian family from the renaissance
Very well done per usual
CMONNNN get this woman to A MILLION SUBSCRIBERS 0:13
Ya talked me into it. Subbed
I need a Game of De Medici right now!!!!😅
Really cool family! Also the Black Prince of Florence by Catherine Fletcher is a good read on Alessandro de' Medici!

Lindsay, I wish you were my AP European History teacher back in high school.
Da fiorentino amo già questo video ❤
I love how the end of the video is like “and the last descendant is on reality tv” 😂 after all of that legacy of changing the course of the western world with art, thought, politics, money, etc, this guy is in the same category as Snooki and The Situation lmao
Idk it’s very humanizing to me. For all their aggrandizement through arts patronage and pedigree they’re still people at the end of the day.
Great video, as always! 😁
Hmmm. The last Medici is a reality tv star and he is critical of the Medici portrayals? That’s rich!
Excellent video, both educational and enjoyable.Thank you.
I love the history of this family. This is like War of the Roses i can watch so many videos about it
I am a great admirer of the Medici family and have studied finance and accountint as well. I think Benedetto Cotrugli was the person inventing the double entry system, not Giovanni de Medici. Luca Pacioli was the first person writing a book about the system, which was used for studying as well, first time in history. But someone correct me if I am wrong.
Netflix used to have a drama series about the Medici. Season 1 was Cosimo and seasons 2 and 3 were about Lorenzo.
Art historians able to see cancer in the pituitary gland is breathtaking.
you cant make up telanovellas as dramatic as this
Speaking of banking families, could you do a video about the Rothschild Family? They are a wealthy Ashkenazi Jewish noble banking family.
On my short list!
I just love your history channel, learned soo much😊 Almost feeling smart 😆
And just Lovve your voice and narration! My favorite. Stay Beautiful and Thank you for all these videos.❤
When I worked in Casino I met one particular woman, Maurizia Medici. She's grand-grand
.....daughter of one of these big names ,.mentioned in this docu
If you could include a few more dates, it would be great for those who find it important to stay located in time. I'll still watch all of them ❤
Makes me wanna replay AC II and Brotherhood 😂 🎮
I hope you cover the Borgias! The show was soooo good!
I remember seeing Lorenzo on Secret Princes 🤣
I saw him in Shrek
First time seeing your content, and I really like your video, so I subscribed.
Bwahahahhh!!! "They woke up dead." 😂
Learned about them, in College and knew of the Borgias... Interesting, video ..
Love this!
HELLO LINDSAY I WATCH ALL UR VIDS ❤❤
I'll be in Florence in a month. this was perfect!!
Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things
I always get the Borgias and Medicis mixed up(the Borgias were from the late 1400s while the Medicis were influential during the late 1500s).
Do one on the Borgias!
Thank You very much.💐
Can you do a video of the offspring related to the Medici, please? 🙏🏼
Is it me or more of the later portraits of the medici's looking like the habsburgs 🤔🤔🤔
the way i SQUEALED when i saw this!!! i love the medicis ❤
Legitimately never heard this “Prince Lorenzo” thought the head of the Medici now was a man from their cadet branch The Ottajano who to my knowledge are the last and closest descendants to the Medici……Giuliano de' Medici di Ottajano as well as his relative Ottaviano de' Medici.
This Lorenzo sounds like a fake and looks scummy too…. especially because the Medici do still exist today through the Ottajano princes line….. 🧐
this is wild
I discovered a few years ago that I am a Medici descendant. That was a huge surprise!
You should talk about Beatrice Cenci.
Wait, so Louis XIV "The Sun King" of France was a descendent of the Medici family?? Wow, that's crazy! ; Btw Ms. Lindsey, I think it's actually pronounced de Meh-dee-chi instead of Med-e-chi.
please do a video on empress matilda of normandy and england!
Galelio didn't get excommunicated because of his studies (the earth revolving around the sun), he got excommunicated for heresy by literally not paying taxes and insulting the Pope.... who was his patron.
fascinating thank u
Yessssssss ❤❤❤❤,love from england
"They woke up dead"
The more power gained the more ruthless so many of them became....the usual
Please do history of the Olympics next
How is there a living Medici when every resource I have says there are none? Including relatives who live in Italy and teach history there.
Borgia next please ↗️
