I think The Desert is one of the darkest ATLA episodes. It's so hopeless, the group is falling apart, and Aang is not himself. We see him kill for the first time, and it's not out of self-defense or anything, he hunts down a hornet that was already fleeing and strikes it down. This is a 12-year-old monk who was taught all life is sacred. It gets bleak

We don't technically know if he killed it, but he did strike it down in anger, using violence as an indulgence, and not as a last resort.

@@Lupinemancer87 "We don't technically know if he killed it", lol. Why do you people always try and pull this shit on every fucking reaction to this episode? It gets hit by a wind blade and instantly falls to the ground, and starts to fall apart in mid-air just as the camera cuts away. He killed it. Watch the clip full screen and slow it down, its fucking head falls off.

Did the 'rough rhinos' sound familiar? Cast your mind back to Avatar Day 😉. To further emphasize on how far Aang had lost himself in emotions, he could've stopped chasing the hornet as soon as Momo was freed. But instead Aang persisted and took down the creature purely out of anger for it touching its friend. Where's our peaceful little monk gone? Even Momo kinda fears Aang at that moment, following him at a distance with the tail between the legs.

Agree that the reveal of Toph's crush on Sokka is such a great moment that's catches the viewer by surprise and really adds another layer of depth to Toph. It does make sense though that Toph could develop a crush on Sokka: they spend a lot of time together because they are traveling companions, he's older and sort of the leader of the group, he's the most significant masculine influence in Toph's life at the moment, she can trust and depend on him, she knows that she can take friendly jabs at him without risk of him abandoning her or taking it too seriously. Sokka being older, often being the de facto leader, and his higher degree of masculine traits compared to Aang are what differentiate him from Aang.

Plus, I can see several reasons why she wouldn't fall for Aang. Firstly, its pretty obvious he has feelings for Katara & so I can see Toph, subconsiously, steering clear as to not unintentionally cause tremours in the group. Due to Suki not being present until now, she wouldn't have a reason to steer clear of him.
Secondly, she likes to have control. Probably due to her parents controlling her but she knows an Avatar who knows the four elements will be able to beat her one-on-one. Maybe not now but eventually he will. As a non-bender, Sokka isn't a threat to her in that sense & she probably believes she'll always have the advantage over him when it comes to combat
Finally, while they say opposites attract, there is normally some base interest then the differences compliment each other. Sokka & Suki work because they're both warriors & strong leaders but the difference lies in Sokka being a more creative thinker & strategiser while Suki is more traditional & hands on. Not to say the reverse doesn't happen some times but these are the building blocks. Whereas Toph & Aang don't really have that base unless you count bending as the base.

You can also notice that whenever Toph can't 'see' because they're on ice or metal, she relies on Sokka to guide her. She always holds onto him, and it's really cute once you notice it!

Aang’s defense mechanism went off when katara got attacked and when he found out appa was muzzled. If that doesn’t tell you he loves them more than anything then I don’t know what will

It'd be weird for toph to know how to swim at this point when you think about it.
Like, she's the blind earthbender. In the water, she is completely disabled when it comes to a humans primary sense. It makes sense as to why she wouldn't wanna go in the water, specially in a world full of dangerous creatures. And even then, it must suck to be in the water, with pretty much no sense of direction. Plus, knowing her parents, it goes unsaid why they wouldn't teach her such a basic skill. They'd been way too afraid to teach her.
