I agree with your tire changing strategy. Let the shops take care of it. I've never liked changing tires, especially tubeless tires. The 82 FLT I told you about in another post I've pretty much decided to replace the primary chain with a closed BDL belt drive when I replace the primary seals. One less thing to leak. And while I'm at it, I will go ahead and replace the transmission seal. Everyone I've talked to said that should be done as a preventive measure because these early 5 speeds are well known to leak on the output side of the transmission. (Outer seal and 5th gear seal) along with the replacing support bearing on the inner primary. But I will wait until it's too cold for my 61 year old self to cope with. Hahaha Here in South Central Virginia, that's probably sometime in early November. Wish I could make it to Smoke-Out, but my work schedule won't allow it this year. Good luck with the shovelhead.
Cool videos bro. I got a 75 FXE and any info is always welcome, built it up from a basket case and took me 2 years. Best regards from down under, cheers
Stuff like parts and "vintage" shirts no, but the Buttcrack Cycles shirts should be available to ship to Canada, though I'm still figuring out the whole webstore thing and might have it messed up. If you have an issue email me at info@buttcrackcycles.com
Kind of crazy how clean of a groove the fender cut into that tire. It looks like it came out of the factory like that. I had a chain guard come lose and rub the side of a tire, but it didn't cut into it like that. Is it your lighting in the garage that's creating that lined shadow effect? Sometimes a fluorescent light with a certain camera frame rate will cause that. It's subtle not noticeable.
Yeah the LED lights in the building and the frame rate of the camera make the shadow lines that walk down the screen, I really have no idea how to fix it so just go with it. And yes, the groove in the tire would be easy to miss if you weren't paying attention!
what's up dude. Is your primary still running stock, like connected to oil pump and draining back to tank? Or have you sealed it off? If sealed off, how much oil in in there? Seems like an excessive amount is leaking. I sealed mine off and only run a tit bit of oil, 30w, up to the clutch hub, just enough to splash around and wet chain. no issues. I agree with you that it is not a pressing issue, just annoying, you'll get to it!!! Make sure there's a bit in there for primary chain and fucking send it. bring a rag 😁
Hey man, it's still connected, not to spoil the next episode, but you're on the right track with the excessive oil causing a leak, and I think maybe my clutch slip issue. I'm about to go work on it now and I'll have the next video up about it Sunday like always! Appreciate your advice and thoughts!
Well, if you used a front fender off a dresser to make that fatbob fender, or not, you have to cut the fender out to clear the chainguard. About an inch above where the chainguard would be at maximum compression of the swingarm. It all depends on how far you rotate the fender when mounting it to the struts. A stock fender will have that notch cut. You can`t squish it together to get it to fit, or it will rub your tire. As for that oil leak, I would check the left rear head bolt for a drop of oil, I got into a real argument with an old Harley mechanic about this, but I have seen it with my own eyes. On Shovelheads, there is the oil drain back hole that matches up with the hole in the jug, I have found the head bolt hole drilled into that oil return passage. I use thread sealer on the left front bolt on the front head and the left rear bolt on the rear head when I put them together, or it will leak. a slow small drip, but a leak. The old guy argued that was impossible for that to be that way, but I saw it with my very own eyes. Maybe not all of them, but certainly on the ones I`ve seen. I can`t see that oil coming around the solenoid and coating it that way.
It's a rear fender that already had the chain cutout. I'll look into the head bolt, but I'm almost positive I've found my issue under the primary, it's already torn down. Often what you see on RUclips "today" was filmed "last week" or even earlier! But I do really appreciate the input and advice on these old bikes

I also HATE changing my tyres - just did a front on my Triumph Bonneville 3 days ago - and managed to have to do it twice as I pinched the brand new tube and destroyed it - had to re-fit the old tube . Gahhh! 😡
I thought Shovel Heads were supposed to leak oil all over the place???? Sorry, just yanking your chain on fixing that oil leak. I am with you on wanting my bikes to be in top shape and proper working order. If they're not and I keep riding, it always bites me in the butt big time!
