just a small thing. I learned from my father years ago that the best way to bleed the brakes is to put a hose over the bleeder screw and into a clear jar with clean brake fluid. Open the bleeder and have another person slowly pump the brake pedal until all bubbles stop appearing in the jar. When the brake pedal is raised, it pulls clean fluid back up into the caliper. This works and doesn't pump fluid out onto the ground.
Any, and I mean any, task that I'm looking to do to my duramax I always research ahead of time to try and prepare everything for the job. And it seems you have a video for every single one of em. Thanks for all your help man. Great video! From Texas
That's a very good explanation of a full brake rebuild. I always laughed about the little packets of lube the auto parts store tried to sell you, until i actually used them, now i realize i was the idiot for not buying them LOL.... And for everyone asking about the jack stands, check out 6:58, they are both under there :) Thanks for sharing as always!
Hey man, thank you! I super appreciate you taking the time to actually explain things. So many other help videos seem as if the person teaching, forgets that maybe we have no idea what we're doing! So thanks again
Thanks
I broke a ratchet and 3/8 to 1/2 adapter trying to get my one front bracket off the other day, it was on there for sure. Wasn't changing the brakes though, but trying to grease the hubs through the abs speed sensor hole and clean the speed sensors off because I was getting the abs while coming to a stop. Might want to give it a shot, will save you some $ on hubs I'm sure. Although make sure if you do you turn the hub enough and get the excess grease out of the hole. On my one side the sensor came out without the plastic cover just like in your video, so thanks for the help on replacing that! Then I got the abs light on after I put it all back together, so I went back and some of the grease had gotten all over the other sensor. Cleaned it off again, all good.
Love your stuff man keep it up! I just quit my 7 year job as a line clearance arborist to pursue a career in diesel tech. I have been going to school for almost a year at the local tech college. I havn.t been this happy about my work in years. It's cool to hear you want to pursue the same kind of change. I took a hefty pay cut, but the happiness I gained has been priceless. Best of luck to you!
+Jacob Sanders that’s great news man! Thanks for the support as well
You do great videos and I have a 04 2500HD Duramax LB7 I love it. Just thought I should say, you really should use jack stands when doing
Breaks or other maintenance under your truck or cars. It’s a safety issue. Great job from another Army Veteran and thank you for serving.
Something I learned a while a go was before you pull the caliper off you can use a pry bar to compress the pistons. I find it's more convienient than clamping it.
You're a mad man🤭 jacking a truck up on a gravel driveway! They funny part is it seems to have held up fine from being so compacted! Stay safe out there brother
What I do when I do breaks is I use antisese on the bolts on the caliper bracket that mount to the axel housing and the bolts that hold the caliper to the bracket and to the lug nuts and the back of the wheel that mounts up to the rotor cause the aluminum rims seize to the rotors cause steel and aluminum don't mix
C clamp and old pad. I do the same thing. Thanks for another great video.
Use jack stands for safety please
Sorry should have watched longer
+john mason they are under there
Truck Master I had a truck fall off a jack I always use stands now
That was my first thought as well. I see that you used the jack stands later in the video, good call.
Agreed John.... had my truck on stands but lifting the bed up to get the shackle bolt lifted pressure off the stands... truck leaned a little and down it came... luckily the tires were on... and I evacuated the moment I noticed movement.
Have a great weekend Thank you
Ya man some good Jack Stand. I would use Jack Stands with a Yugo! Oh I see the stands now....cool. Thanks man!
Great job. Another great video.
Perfect video. thanks!
Love your videos - thank you! With respect, please capture and properly dispose of wasted fluids. Also, considering all the work done, it's a good time to replace/upgrade your brake lines too.
Good tutorial, I would also recommend putting brake grease on the contact surface of the caliper pistons and the part contacting the outer brake pad to avoid brake noise.
They make a rubber goo for that and no chance of grease melting into the pads!
Great video. Might be a good idea to lube the pins of the front calipers so they don’t seize up.
A good step to take is also to just check the new slider pins since they are new calipers and check if there is grease and its also a good idea to grease with GM approved stuff since some system require certain greases. And also notice looks like ya have a pinion seal leak maybe address also for an upcoming episode? But other then that great video as always
Always helpful
Clean new rotors with brake parts cleaner to remove rust preventative so it doesn't get onto the new pads. Also make sure that the bleeders on the calipers will loosen properly before installing them on the vehicle ( best to do at the parts counter when purchasing ) so you don't find a defect after installation. Bleeders can sometimes break with reman calipers.
Same process for the front I assume? Hoping to tackle that this weekend
Is there a video somewhere on how to replace the wheel studs off a truck similar to this one? I have 2 broken rear passenger wheel studs.
My calipers came with new copper washers for the brake line. I tried to remove the old ones but they would not come off and fluid just kept dripping out. Did you replace yours?
Truck Master your opinion on Reman calipers vs brand new castings ?
Great vid... i like to see front brakes (unless youve done it before)... Im using my gi bill and going to UTI in houston and have done the brakes class, however you do great vids and i have an LB7 so it matches up closely and almost everything
+Paul Aurand that’s good I’m somewhat doing this right I haven’t went to school for it yet, good luck man
Let me show ya ……. One minute in ……. CRUUUUUUNNNCHHHHH
I change my brakes yesterday and now I'm hearing a clucking noise any suggestions
ty for the vid
Is this the same for a 04.5 Lly Chevy 2500hd duramax as well?
I seen u greased the clips I always grease under clips that's where rust builds up an squeezes not letting pads slide freely I've noticed u greasing top of clips which builds up with brake dust
TRUCK MASTER WHAT BRAKE PADS DO YOU RECOMMEND & ROTORS PLEASE, THANKS
You want to grease the slide pins.
Kirk C and use brake system grease. Not anti-seize like we’re often tempted to use. Brake parts grease/jelly has better heat tolerance.
man your scaring me...jack stands plz....i have seen many bad things happen without them....especially with stuck bolts and such....lots of movement on pivot point on one single jack....
Semi metallic or ceramic pads?
What products did you use if you don't mind sharing ?
This is perfect! I need new brakes
+JW Montoya you got this man do a video on it
JACK STANDS!
Ya can always drop the tires under the side your working on for back up safety .
I always gravity bleed my brakes just keep fluid full to keep air out.
So what size is the hex key
Great video Well done.
Thank you.
the first time i changed the brakes on my 05 2500 i knew the fronts were bad hence why i was doing them but when i got to the back idk how i never felt it or heard it but the pass side rotor was paper thin on the backside and the driver side i was grinding down the fins to almost nothing. i have never seen rotors do that but they were def. the worst rotors i have ever seen
Awesome vid bro. Through in some safety tips too. #jackstands. Thanks. Oops. You did put some in later in the video. My bad. I fucking liked this before I even watched it. Haha
Dude jackstands!!! Buy some please
Good tips.
Hello Duramax Owners my steering wheel shakes when braking. Anyone know what is may be, I got 2018 duramax short bed with 37000 miles plus
This is the one I was waiting for. Thank you
+Terry Brunson awesome thanks
I'm at 107k on my Duramax and original pads. Plenty remaining.
Metal pistons or phenolic pistons I can’t find an answer anywhere!
Replace the copper washer on the brake line every time you take line lose!!
Living in Maine whenever I replace something like a caliper I paint it with por15 caliper paint. Ill get years of no rust and they last much longer.
Good point
Is it a good idea to replace the front brakes while you are doing the rear? Or could you get away with just replacing the rear?
Hope this comment is helpful, being a year late. You only need to replace them in pairs, both fronts or both rears. Though it is a good idea to check the fronts if you’re doing the rears and vice versa, it isn’t always necessary to do all 4 brakes.
Is this the same for an 08 2500hd? Your vids are awesome, one request. Can you start to specify the year models that the process is the same for in your future videos? Your step by step vids are great. Big fan here in West TEXAS \,,/
+Stephen Z71 yes! It’s the same process
I use exhaust brake and tow haul when I'm braking all the time.
+Garrett R.C. Same here man! It sounds cool as well
Truck Master I love your channel!
How is that done ?
You should plstidip your back bumper black think it look cool man keep up the great videos
+063rdgen 2500CTD good point never thought about that
Yeah and they have the glossifier to make it shiny and if you dont like it hey peel it off lol
Your vids always give me confidence to to my own work
+AFG New Media that’s good to know thanks
Year and a half late but anyway. If I'm not changing caliper and clamping pistons, I take brake fluid out of reservoir....unless you want a mess on the ground and in the engine bay.
Stands please
Good video and information but jack stands are necessary.
Why drain brake fluid on ground when the bucket was literally inches away, hope your not on a well.
looks like your rear pinion seal is leaking
Josh your rearend seal is leaking that’s why you may have an accident going down the hiway in the future because you ran out of rearend grease
WARNING my lly was a torx bolt for the caliper. Luckily I had one but wanted to mention it here in case someone doesn't and about to try this job
please use jack stands brother!,but also use some brake clean on the rotor it takes the oil an the factory stuff off an gives the pad something to stick to!
Definitely grease up thoughs caliper pins .
What are the caliper pins?
Need to use jackstands !!
I did
Please tell me you cleaned the back side of your rims. Brake dust is so hard on those rims
+Silverado 2500hd I did
Where you able to get your wheel cleaned off from the dust caked on there?
+Jake Strohkirch yes but it ruined the finish on the rim I might buy a new rim now
Truck Master dang that makes me nervous about mine. I have the same problem but on two wheels. Ugh wish me luck!
If I change an caliper, I'll change the rubber hose at the same time. Those things get nasty on the inside over time.
u need leaf springs brother
You Always check your entire drive train before you should really do any kind of performance modifications you know how dangerous it would be if that rotor exploded
When did you get air bags
+daniel jones years ago, I only use them when I’m hauling heavy though
How to video? Park brake adjustment. Please !
+Terry Brunson thanks for the idea I might do a video on it now that you mentioned it
Those lift blocks look like the holes weren’t aligned... Hopefully you don’t go down the road sideways or pop the axle loose.
Brake fluid is really nasty stuff. The bleeder screw has a nipple so you can attach a hose and bleed it into a jar or something instead of just on the ground
What size are those tires and wheels?
+Erick Morales 35s on 20s
Be sure to spray those rotors off with BrakeClean first. They have anti corrosion/anti rust grease/oil on em. And it’s good practice to crack the bleeder on the caliper before you push the piston(s) in. Don’t push that nasty old fluid back into the system.
And you need some traction bars next man. 😎
And look up the LMM/LML HydraBoost OEM replacement. It replaces our stock brake booster with a LML piece and it’s supposed to be a huge upgrade in braking performance and pedal feel for only like $130. Drop in replacement.
+Bayer-Z28 your absolutely right I need trac bars bad!
+Bayer-Z28 no kidding I must check this out
@@35057 Whom is the manufacturer and part #?
You need jack stands
Dude if you dont have jack stands put the tires under the frame so if truck falls it wont crush you. Plus the snap on 3ton jack is amazing. Just saying
Thanks I had jack stands under the truck in this video though
@@TruckMaster I seen them there a little ways into the video but not at the beginning of it. Just dont want to see ya get hurt
With a truck that expensive you need to use Jack Stands. Safety also. 6 ton will do. Mechanic 101...
i dont miss needing a blow torch for doing brake jobs growing up in michigan. I cringe so hard whenever i see your videos of the bottom of your truck that rust!
I'm sure you know this but everything will come off easier if you coat everything in wd40
Can you save your wheel ?
greg pepple yeah. How much paint or coating got melted off from the brake fluid?
+Bayer-Z28 the rim is roached I have to buy a new one now
Big ass tires lol
Nothing like saving yourself money, think how much a garage charges
Woe to the one person who didn't like the video. I need to change my brakes and rotors soon.
I'm thinking excessive burnouts is what overheated the caliper and caused it to stick...just saying!
+the majority yep lol
Love your channel, love the Duramax, you're the best!! Keep up the great vids and thanks for sharing!
Love the videos man! Thanks for following me on Instagram at michigan_diesel_trucks
+Noah Holt thanks man
your rear lift blocks do not look right
Please next time use Jack stands before you drop your truck on your head..
Can you do a front and rear brake change video for a 2014 LML Duramax? Iv been searching for one on RUclips but can only find videos for older duramax and the next model year duramax.
Where are your Jack stands. You're making me awful nervous for your sake!
+Lawrence Mashak they are under there
Use jack stands , very unsafe with a Chinese jack bad move
Dangerous way you use to do it whit out stand one day the truck will falls on you
I will never trust a hydraulic jack like this guy does, made me nervous watching the whole video 🧐😡🤬
I’m sorry but it’s better to Replace the calipers in pairs. Yes it’s expensive but what will happen few months later the other goes bad what see this guy is working on snow ⛄️ Yuk
