Lester used the same tactic that Malvo used to get out of the police station. He feigned weakness and innocence to lure Malvo into a trap. Malvo let his guard down and underestimated Lester, and because of that he lost the battle. Malvo at nearly every other point in the season had understood what he was dealing with and handled the situations skillfully. But he had transformed Lester and now did not understand him.

This was Lester's final victory, and Malvo's first real loss. Personally i always was rooting for Lester, but him getting his 2nd wife killed was such a scumbag move that I always knew he ultimately deserved to die. But the fact that, after being the underdog for so long, he finally outwitted the devil; is justice enough for me. I think Malvo could've actually still finished the job there and then if he wanted to, but he was so surprised and perhaps even impressed by the monster he'd created that he decided to let Lester live. Letting the ice take Lester in the end was true justice, I don't think any other character really had the right to take him out.

Yung Skwert it’s been a while since I’ve watched it, but I think In the elevator scene Lester kind of challenged him. Lester was arrogant and thought now that he’s rich and successful he was a match for Malvo. Malvo is very single minded and probably found this a direct challenge to him, which, when he shot the people in the elevator, he decided to accept, whatever the consequences. Then he just devoted all his time to it.

I think Lester was a danger to him. He was the only one who clearly knew him and what he was doing. He knew of the police who suspected him, but they did not have enough evidence yet. He was sure that Lester would eventually betray him as soon as he was caught, like before he gave his name to two men from Fargo.

Realistically speaking, if a Bear trap snaps your leg like that, there was no way in hell Malvo would have been composed enough to dodge a bullet, let alone pick up something from the ground and throw it at Lester, he would have been wailing out in anguish for a good couple minutes before even being able to remove the bear trap, let alone think straight.
