I strongly recommend that you don't give up on bladee here. he's hard to get into, but very rewarding if you do.
Fr I hated icedancer forever but as I listened to other albums I warmed up to his sound now it’s peak. He probably should’ve reacted to a different bladee album first

Dont give up on Bladee, he gets better and better.
Benig a Drainer is like being a nicotine addict. You don't become a cigarette addict the first time you smoke, you probably won't even like it and have a cough attack. But people keep trying until they learn how to smoke properly and are able to feel the effects. By that time, you already love it, and it's really hard to quit. You need to listen to Drain Gang a lot more to understand it and feel it, and when you do, there's no going back. This is a warning, as a Drain Gang addict myself. Still, take this information however you want.

Bladee is cool cause his albums all have a very distinct feel I think you'd find crest or spiderr fun
It's true there's a lot of evolution in bladee's discog. Most of his pre-2019 stuff sit more in that nightshift mood, while the post-2019 stuff exist way more in the daylight. Exeter/333/The Fool/Crest are all kinda in the brighter, fun, more spiritual, dreamlike uplifting side of things. Spiderr things are still focused on the spiritual but it's getting a bit more morose. Then on Cold Visions things kinda come crashing down again and take a way darker turn but the energy is much higher and more aggressive than anything he's previously done.
I think you’d enjoy all these projects mentioned way more than Icedancer cus none of them sit in that specific version of drained mood you described, they’re way more vivid.
If you did just one more I’d definitely be happy to see Crest which is a collab with Ecco2k, but Cold Visions would be really cool too since it’s his most current

I think you should do just one more Bladee album to see the progression, I think Crest is an obvious listen because its with Ecco, but I think The Fool, Spiderr, Or even Cold Visions would be good listens as they have much more consistent themes throughout than icedancer, imo.
You have to do cold visions now and you will understand then you will want to visit his other stuff
please give it another shot and listen to Crest & Cold Visions, i think both those projects would really expand your idea of what his music can sound like
edit: and if you wanna check out some stuff on your own time i'd recommend Exeter and Trash Island, i think you'd really enjoy the production on those two

Interestingly enough, I deeply got into bladee’s music (specifically Icedancer and Red Light) back when I was working a night shift during winter. My work used to be connected with music that I didn’t really like, so, to turn some icedancer on on my way home was such a pleasure. Really interesting how you thought of the same exact mood/scenario even though our opinions on the album differ

It might be interesting to listen to Crest or The Fool by Bladee. As you say the depressed drugged out vibes of early Bladee arent something you resonate with but interestingly enough he's later progressed into themes of bliss/euphoria, life and death, and also just being a little bit silly on some songs like hotel breakfast.
If anything I think it would be interesting if nothing else but to see the contrast and sort of jump forward in the development of an artist who's early work you might not be into (like jumping from OK Computer/Pablo Honey to In Rainbows and seeing what aspects of their music remained/changed)

If you pick another Bladee album to listen to, I'd say go with 333. It's got a lot more ambient, dreamy, sounds going on, and his songwriting has a lot more depth that I think you'd like. Overall it's just a more happy album.

i'm glad you like E but the album is definitely not just about being drugged out or dealing with addiction. like, i've never even thought of that as the main theme. its easily the best drain project to me
and yeah, Icedancer is definitely not bladee's most "layered" album, so to speak. i'm a fan of all of his work but he's grown a lot as an artist since 2018. i think you'd enjoy the lyrics on his 2021 album The Fool
Bob you gotta do dawn fm before The Weeknds thrird and last album in that triology comes out, which is soon! I think you will enjoy dawn fm as much if not more than after hours.
Gotta still recommend Cold Visons man. It’s raw, viscerally enjoyable Carti-esque rage in spades (F1lthy production on over half the project) that feels like a true elevation of the genre and style. Extremely accessible and satisfying/diverse sonically while having some real thematic depth that goes as deep as you want it to go.

Highly recommend checking out Yves Tumor, the producer on AAA Powerline. Their music doesn’t sound like dg’s. It’s more post-punk & shoegaze/dreampop adjacent. I think you would really like the sound. “Praise a Lord Who Chews” and “Heaven to a Tortured Mind” are my 2 favorites

not a drainer… yet. in all seriousness though as a huge bladee fan i really like his more recent stuff (crest, spiderr, cold visions) a lot more than icedancer
give cold visions, PXE or crest a chance i think you will find something you like in there
i can only speak for myself but one of bladee's best qualities is that every album/project is so different that it's hard to disavow him. if a project doesn't really suit you maybe another one fits your taste more. it's also possible that you simply don't enjoy his music much which is fine. ecco still has another project if that is something that interests you as well

hey Bob, i have a suggestion. i think you should listen (or watch) some of Bo Burnhams material. hes an incredibly talented musical comic, but very introspective and almost always has a deeper meaning in his stuff. I can guarantee it wont be disappointing. (hes also really good at rapping too)

As a bladee fan I don’t really go back to much of his older stuff. Crest and anything past that is all really good and consistent imo. His older stuff for it’s time was good and cool but I will always choose his more recent stuff over it
I would recommend you to react to any of Yung Lean’s albums. I think you’re going to like his music more than dg. Thaiboy Digital “Tiger” mixtape is also I’d recommend to listen to.
