- Air Malta Trip Report flying from Catania to Malta onboard one of the Air Malta A320Neo on a lovely sunny summer morning.
My first flight with to Malta and with Air Malta. This was an extremely short flight, just slightly above 150km, and it was flown on one of the Air Malta Airbus A320 Neo. The views, especially during the approach to Malta airport were amazing! Lots of little villages, castles, churches... A really beautiful approach!
It was extremely comfortable, as we were just 9-10 passengers, we had around 8 seats per passenger. As it was a 20 minutes flight, of course, there was no onboard service.
Now, what is the purpose of this flight? Is it at any moment of the year worth for the airline to fly this route on a jet plane? With 15 passengers onboard I can assure you it made a huge loss. Or are the crazy and useless travelling restrictions the cause of the disgrace that happened in this route today? With 9-10 passengers no airline can survive, that's for sure.

Gracias amigo por tus excelentes y entretenidos videos. En el universo de los miedos, el miedo a lo que viene de fuera es el más lógico (como en casa, en ningún sitio) pero también el más absurdo porque el ser humano es social y necesita interactuar con sus semejantes y eso sólo se consigue viajando. Viajar es la mejor medicina para evitar actitudes racistas y excluyentes hacia el semejante. Muchas gracias por contribuir a mejorarnos.

As a Sicilian, I can tell you that actually the CTA-MLA is the most trafficked non-italian route out of CTA ;) in Summer there can be even 4 daily flights with KM only. Malta is a very loved destinantion for Sicilians.

The load factor in this flight didn't agree with that. I guess there were just the crazy restrictions as I say in the video.

@@OnBoardHD It's definitely because of the latest changes to Italy's entry requirements because of Covid that it was so empty. It is definitely not a common problem on this route.
Until a few weeks ago, you could fly to Catania and get tested on arrival if you were already vaccinated. This was obviously very convenient cause the test was offered for free and you didn't have to book it in advance. Now you have to get tested BEFORE flying even if you are vaccinated. This means that you have to book your test some 2-3 weeks in advance if you want to get it for free in Malta (only Maltese residents). Otherwise you can get tested privately, but that costs a lot more than the cost of the flight most of the time. So that obviously discourages quite a lot of people.

@@OnBoardHD Well, there was a period in summer when Sicily was also requiring tests for the vaccinated. Also don't forget that families travelling with children who couldn't be vaccinated yet back then had to get their children tested before returning to Malta. Conditions are constantly changing. In fact I myself kept postponing a trip to Sicily (from Malta) until the very last week of October, even though I would have preferred to go earlier. The flights then were pretty much full at the end of October, even though it was not exactly the best time to go for a holiday with all the storms that were raging at the time.

Ponés la información de cada avión que ves, tanto modelo como el destino y los kilómetros! es algo que siempre me pregunto cuando estoy en el aeropuerto. Y cuando sobrevolás alguna ciudad, ponés el nombre!!!! ADORO ESO!!! Toda la información que quiero está en estos videos! GRACIAS!!!! Y lo de las restricciones en Malta, lo mismo sucede en Argentina. Están matando al turismo mucho más que el COVID

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I flew from Amsterdam to Malta on Air Malta. We had to return to the gate 2 times in Amsterdam for mechanical problems--- not very confidence inspiring. Malta was lovely though-- quite hot in August. Took the ferry to Sicily to continue our travel.

Onboard, I don´t know the restriction for you to travel to Scandinavia (Thinking of Norway and Denmark mainly now) but there are lots of omicron cases, Norway newly shut down which I suspect Denmark also did. Hopefully, you still can travel up here to see the snow! (PS: The snow has melted away, but should be possible to see in Trondheim and more north! If not, it will come back to Oslo also soon!)
No worries. I have already recorded some videos with snowed landscapes. To day I've recorded the last flight of 2021. Lets see what 2022 brings us.

I used to load Malta, Baltic and Vueling at Gatwick before disease. Malta had one of the fullest mail cargo of any flight (usually 319s). Also usually full on passengers too. For those still working airside, these must be some of the easiest times to be a loader!
Baltic is probably in the middle of nowhere because it is a lot cheaper out there (more remote stand, no airbridge etc.) and given that at Gatwick they were far less frequent than Malta, it's probably quite a while before it's next flight - maybe even next day or later.

Anyway, the Air Baltic one had the engines covered, so I guess they had some maintenance issue and was AOG.

@@OnBoardHD Not necessarily maintainence. In the winter months, aircraft parking overnight or longer would have engines covered (particularly noticable on Christmas Eve when almost all aircraft would stay until 26th at least). As did many of those with private owners. May just be a bit of extra care.

For the Air Baltic aircraft, maybe Swedish delegations visiting Catania. According to the Air Baltic registration, it flew from Stockholm to Catania and it left three days later. As always, great trip report.
Two Air Baltic aircrafts operate flights for Eurowings in Stuttgart if you plan to go there.

That was a nice slow entry of the aircraft right before the door. I could start feeling it (the I will fly feeling).
The orange push back vehicle looks funny. It's like a baby version of the big ones that are used for wide bodies.
I think Air Malta and Air Batlic work together?
For what others told me, the Air Baltic plane was probably with some problem that had to be solved before flyign again.

I can't agree more about the whole travel restriction part; The fact alone that usually the countries with the strictest travel regimes tend to get hit harder (like UK this time) just goes to show how these concepts don't work. Other than that, great video as usual.
That said, I hope that I'll be travelling to Gran Canaria from Austria in 2 weeks (actually on the last day of December) without any overcomplicating new rules making that impossible...

It's clear that the travel restrictions don't help. Other measures with the country, yes, for sure, and even that I don't like them, I understand them and support them. But destroying the tourism with these crazy restrictions is clearly not the way. And this new Omicron variant has shown it again.
The more restrictions the is the situation worse. Let's start living normaly! There are countries with minor restrictions like Mexico or Poland where I live and the situation is better

At 14:25 you can see an aerobatics team and military planes. This means that you arrived in Malta when Malta held its airshow during the last weekend of September.
I counted the very low amount of 14-15 passengers.

Very nice vid..I've never flown with Air Malta..I should try..Did you now that you can fly from Malta to Larnaca on a 773 with Emirates? It would be great to fly this short route on the triple seven! I think it's 3-4 weekly flights with EK doing DXB-LCA-MLA and back but you can buy and fly just the MLA-LCA part!

Just been in malta one week ago and the flights were full. Ryanair flights are always full. And Ryanair operates the Malta-Catania sector as well.
I like the approach over Gozo. I visited the entire island in one day by renting a quad vehicle

Gozo is by far the lovelier of the two islands in my opinion.
Funny thing was that in the first 4 minutes of the video you can see 3 maltese planes, the Ryanair (Malta air), Air Malta that you were boarding and the Lauda Europe which is also an airline where all their planes ( i think all i could be wrong) are maltese registered with 9H-, secondly was the video recorded in summer? just curious cos of how dry Malta looks compared to how it is looking rn after all that rain!

Really nice video. Even if it’s Covid time, it’s impressive how this flight was quite empty. I made a flight from Basel to Kos in September 2021 and it was FULL. I also took a flight from Nuremberg to Heraklion in October 2020 and it was also full (yes even in October 2020).
Did Malta have stronger restrictions even for vaccinated in September 2021?
Full flights are the best. Especially duribg these crazy times we saw the last 2 years...
What were the travel restrictions? I visited Croatia, Germany, Switzerland (just transit), Austria (transit) and Malta in October and had no problems. Just a piece of paper for Croatia and Malta and they asked us to fill out a form in the plane for contact persons.
Yeah, exactly. In October Malta had already realised that they were not doing well... By the time I flew there they were asking for a vaccine certificate AND test.

Flown to Malta probably around a dozen times, never with Air Malta though. Flights with Ryanair still seem to be packed though
Others told me that the Ryanair flights to Malta are usually full... Maybe Air Malta is doing something wrong... Who knows...

Air Malta would be wise to invest in a couple of Dash 8s or ATRs for these shorter flights whilst traffic is low. As you say can't be fuel efficient to fly around on a jet with just 9 passengers ?

However, some others told me that the RYANAIR flights on the same route are always full. For sure this flight made looses.

During the end of ski season, Nice BA runs similar numbers to Gatwick on 319s/320s. But probably sustainable back in normal times for the transition before summer.

Completely agree with your remarks about the travel restrictions. They have done way more harm than good.
I completely agree with the safety measures, but not with the travel restrictions. Once again with Omicron it's been demonstrated that they don't work at all.
Why Airbaltic? It has extensive routing. I flew on A220-300 Rīga - Catania (direct) a few shorts years ago.
The plane was with the engines covered, so it was not a regular flight.
sad part was that air malta used to go to all 7 continets. we had direct flights to NYC and Australia. Both on opposite sides of the world.

In the 70s and maybe into the 80s?, Air Malta had a 707 to NYC. There were some charters from NYC & DTW (& YYZ) at least. In 1972 I was on a DC-8 (Trans-International Airways). DTW to JFK to pickup more passengers then onto MLA. These were organized by Maltese Clubs in the two cities.

Yes, but this plane was overnight and with the engines covered. Maybe it had some malfunction and had to be grounded there for maintenance.

We went to Malta many years ago and really enjoyed it, and IIRC flew with Air Malta. As for restrictions, all the scientists advising governments and the politicians who vote for lockdowns and other restrictions don't lose any salary payments as a result so it's easy for them not to care about the impact on others.
The point is that local restrictions of course help. But just avoiding people to come to a country doesn't stop anything. We saw it 3 times already, and we are seeing it for the 4th time now...
3 Trailers for cargo, this flight probably made more money than you think. If it was just passenger baggage, there would be a single barely full one. I've known a number of flights have under 20 passengers but full on cargo.
That's definitely a possibility... but, sadly, it doesn't apply to almost any flight... =/

Always used Air Malts from Birmingham but they kept dropping the flights every few years. Now have to use Ryan cheap Air which is more expensive. Air Malta have given up in my opinion!😎🇬🇧
Well, Ryanair always has the lowest fares from my experience. I made more than 350 flighs with them and never had a problem. Same applies with Air Malta, but just with 1 flight :D
Restrictions don’t help. Testing for the uk is also really crazy. So much extra money for people to fly and with chance of new restrictions while abroad, it’s putting people off flying, which is a shame. Anyway another great video amigo 👍

Could you make more effort to fly with Air Malta? I like seeing my national airline on review. Unfortunately many of them are bad ones!! I flew with AM several times. They are ok.

Sometimes airlines fly certain routes as they carry profitable cargo. Number of pax is not always the most important factor.
That's true, but sadly, that doesn't apply in the majority of cases =/
As I live in Malta, I have flown the Malta-Catania route once with Air Malta and once with Ryanair. Ryanair has a much more convenient flight in the afternoon.
The former tourism Ministry made a miracle in saving Air Malta, yet it is still at risk of bankruptcy, also due to some ALPA trade union claims.
And by the way mate, welcome back to Malta. Really loved the views of Gozo, Mgarr and Mdina

@@OnBoardHD you're welcome. Merry Christmas to you too. Just to add something more, last year Air Malta was operating in the winter a guaranteed schedule, meaning that flights were going to operate independently from the number of passengers.
And while I love travelling with them for the luggage allowance, Air Malta's dealing with refund requests has been disgraceful
I think the reason why they didn't serve any refreshments on board is because the flight was short from Catania to Malta

I flew on Air Malta long time ago, in 2011, from and to St Petersburg. I didn't like this airline very much, there was bad legroom, also food wasn't the best. (Yes, in 2011 many airlines had complimentary hot meals)

Que tristeza ver la mínima ocupación de este vuelo, estamos completamente de acuerdo que todas estas restricciones derivadas de la pandemia Covid-19 han destruido el turismo mundial y por ende han perjudicado muchísimo a todas las compañías aéreas a nivel global.

Que muchas de las restricciones actuales son necesarias estamos todos de acuerdo. Pero a parte, esa constante carga hacia la industria de los viajes es completamente inutil.

Bare in mind, cargo makes a huge amount of money for airlines
That applies to cargo airlines, not to passenger ones :)
I know sometimes the cargo can help to make profit, but that is not the case in the majority of flights.
@@OnBoardHD well thats true in most cases, however with Air Malta, they take cargo for the Maltese mail service. Ranging up to 2tonnes a flight. Thats very easy profit. (This is speaking as someone who works with air malta in LHR)

Malta looks like an amazing travel destination! Lovely views from the plane. But I don't agree with you on the travel restrictions. Each and every KLM plane landing at Schiphol from South Africa brought in a huge group of people who carried the Omikron variant of the SARS-Covid virus. So you import and export unwanted guests as well. Travell restrictions are more effective than wearing a piece of cloth or toilet paper over your nose and mouth. But neither are fun...Thanks for sharing another lovely video!
This flight was recorded in mid-summer, when the cases in Europe were at the lowest. Travel restrictions are not effective. With the inter-connected world that we have, when you discover 1 variant in one place, you can bee 110% sure that it's already spreading all around the world. You can delay it maybe some days, but that's all. And you can see this perfectly with the new Omicron variant. Everyone prhibited the flights from several African countries... and what was the result? :)
Honestly Travel Restrictions are mandatory for the situation we're in. There are way too less travel restrictions. Even without a new variant.
Do we want to start this whole thing again or say, okay lets do 6 month no travel and then we start again.
Guess how many airlines, hotels, restaurants, taxis, bus companies... would survive another 6 months without any revenue.
@@OnBoardHD As long as people disagree with things against spreadings (like travel restrictions, vaccinations and lockdowns) you help to prolong the whole pandemic things and the restrictions.
But for my personal and egotistical view i have to admit "Life under Social Distancing and lockdown liks restrictions is pretty awesome".
I don't dissagree with social distance, with facemasks (FFP2 should be mandatory except in summer, from my point of view)... I dissagree with destoyinh the tourism industry. Airplane travellers are the most checked ones always: temperature checks, locator forms, vaccine or test certificate... meanwhile, inside every country everyone is free to go withour showing nothing to gather with hundreds...
Travelling is not the problem, and Spain, for example, is perfect proof of it during spring and summer 2021 waves: they didn't ban travel at all, but they put other restrictions like the ones we said a few lines above.
Un vídeo cortito, no me imagino los costes de esa compañía en fletar ese vuelo para sólo 9 pasajeros no sale rentable ni de lejos; Estoy de acuerdo contigo en que las restricciones brutales al turismo no hacen más que arruinarlo y aquí si te diré que no se han hecho las cosas bien en el control de esta pandemia desde el principio y lo afirmo cómo Sanitario que hay muchas cosas a mejorar y de esta forma lo único que se consigue es destruir empleo de forma bestial. Que no se han hecho cosas bien es obvio... también es cierto que nos enfrentábamos a algo así por primera vez... Pero lo de las restricciones de viajes han demostrado ya 3 veces en los últimos 2 años que no valen para nada. Se prohibió volar a casi todo el mundo cuando apareció la variante Delta. ¿Cuál es la dominante ahora mismo en todo el mundo?
Ahora aparece la Omicrón y se vuelve a medio paralizar el mundo... ¿Ha servido de algo?

The travel restrictions are, as you say, silly but you are wrong about local gatherings - they are restricted too and we have to wear a mask outside all the time, even alone in the countryside, which is daft. Only Malta and Gozo, and Cyprus have that rule I believe.
Anyway, what it has been demonstrated once again this week is that travel restrictions don't work at all. They just destroy airlines and tourism.

I agree with you. I can udnerstand that they may ask for an antigen one when the country you are departing from has a very high incidence... but that's all. Who is going to pay for 1 pre-departure PCR + 2 on arrival? Many times those PCRs are more expensive than the trip itself... crazy...

No airline can survive these travel restrictions much longer. Even the likes of Ryanair or Wizzair can't fill their planes, despite their extremely low fares.
I agree... Hopefully, this time will be the last one with travel restrictions... as, once again, they've demonstrated they don't work at all.
@@OnBoardHD would be nice but I doubt it. Not once since March 2020 has aviation ever been back at pre-covid levels.
Doing an announcement straight after touchdown, whist still in reverse thrust is not professional, still in the critical part of the landing and her mind is distracted.

General restrictions work, that's for sure, but as said on the video, the travel restrictions and travel bans definitely not work at all.
For what other told me in the comments, the did this route with RYANAIR and the flights were full.. =/
It can be profitable that is why. Before Covid two flights a day with AM! Flights used to be relatively full up even. Many maltese and sicilians visit each other countries.
It sounded like the flight attendant talked the entire flight...yikes!

Dudo que ningún gobierno quiera hacer daño a la aviación. De hecho, estoy convencido de que no es el caso. Pero parece darles igual los daños colaterales que se le imponen día tras día a la industria del turismo...
