    Instead of using UBER the B.A. bus system is cheap and amazing. All the news stands, on every second corner, have little tourist booklets in English or Spanish. In these books they have just about every combination of bus routes to get anywhere, where to catch or change buses etc. Very easy to understand

    The exchange rate took me back in time to when I visited East Germany (when it still existed) in 1990 just before reunification. The official exchange rate from East Mark to West Mark was 2:1, but on the black market was 4:1. A few weeks after I left Germany, the money was unified. We were told before the wall came down a few months earlier, the exchange rate was 22:1. You could buy a lot in East Germany for cheap.... if they had it. (I managed to hang on to a few East Marks and would have hung on to a few West Marks had I known they too would be replaced by the Euro.) It was also neat to see the Casa Rosada which is featured in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita, which is based on Eva Perón's life. Thank you for sharing!

      I recall visiting Poland in 1990. A friend and I were sightseeing when all of a sudden the skies opened up. We found this little cafeteria-like restaurant for working people and decided we should have lunch. We ordered absolutely everything and had cherry pierogies for dessert. It cost some ridiculously tiny amount of money with the exhange rate, like 40 cents for the two of us combined.

Because through Airbnb payment going in USD so no benefits from blue dollar. It looks prices change a lot from your visit, we cant find any apartment for less then 30$, even on booking where we can use benefits of blue dollar and pay in cash. And where was location? If we hadn't seen someone else's video about their experience using the cambio system I think we would have been really nervous, but thankfully we had seen enough online from other travelers to feel like it was probably going to be OK, and it definitely was! What is nice is that once we had exchanged money once and had success with it, we just went back to the same persona each time we needed to exchange more because we felt comfortable with him and were able to build a bit of a relationship. Feel free to ask us any questions about the process though! And have an amazing time in Buenos Aires, it is an awesome city to explore!!

Unfortunately you have to pay with a card for airbnb but a trick we always use is to book an airbnb for 1 or 2 nights, see if you like it, then if you want to stay longer you can talk to the host and ask to pay in cash off the platform. So, do you enter Argentina with piles of American dollars? How could you do this safely knowing pick pocketing is a thing there? I wouldn't mind doing this, but dread the idea of losing all my money all at once in a foreign country. I took a big bag of quarters and dollar coins with me when we went to Ecuador, which used the USD. They came in very handy for taxi rides and small purchases at the mercados. Don't take really big bills because few people have change for something as large as a $100 bill unless it is a large hotel or big business.

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  2 года назад

      Great points! We arrived with about $1000 USD in our pockets to get us started (we spent about a month in Argentina) and slowly exchanged this on the streets (like we showed in this video). It also scares us to have this much money on us, but to help decrease the chances of having it all stolen we split it up into 4 different backpacks (we each carry 2) so that if one backpack got stolen the most we would lose is $250. However, the system for using Western Union to send yourself pesos using the blue market exchange rate is a very good option that eliminates the need to bring a large amount of cash. If you plan to stay in BA during your trip then you really shouldn't have any problems with this method, it only gets difficult when you go to harder to reach places like Ushuaia and El Calafate and where there is only 1 or 2 Western Unions and they commonly run out of pesos each day. Hopefully that helps you out a bit!

    Thanks for all the great info! Would you know if hotels and airlines (to fly inside Argentina) accept payment in cash as well, or just credit card?

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  2 года назад +4

      Great question! We always paid in cash for hotels and hostels during our time in Argentina. Our method to make this work was to find a way to contact the accommodation outside of the official routes, so for example we would find their What'sApp number or a facebook business page and get in touch that way. By avoiding websites like booking.com and the hotels official website we would secure the dates verbally (over whatsapp or facebook) and then pay in pesos upon arrival! We had a few accommodations ask us to send deposits electronically ahead of time and we just explained that we were only able to pay cash at the time of arrival and they always ended up saying that was OK. Maybe we just got lucky! Regarding flights, we never had luck paying for flights in cash directly with an airline, however in Buenos Aires we were able to visit the tourist info kiosks that are posted around the city and we had an agent book us flights from there, and we were able to pay her in cash! There was a small markup (about $23USD per ticket) for this service, but by paying cash we saved WAY more than $23, so it was a no brainer!

    How do you pay for an Airbnb with cash?
    Also I am confused pay with USD for meals or the money you exchanged (blue dollar scheme)?

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  2 года назад +2

      Hey Linda! To book an Air BnB with cash we first book online using the app (and pay by credit card), but we only book 1-2 nights. When we get to the Air BnB we will reach out to the host via What'sApp (or talk to them face to face) and ask to extend our stay outside of the Air BnB app and offer to pay cash. This saves the host money because Air BnB takes a significant cut of the amount you pay when you book an accommodation. This also means the price is reduce for us, because Air BnB isn't taking that chunk of money. The reason we book 1-2 nights using the Air BnB app to begin with is because there is no way to get the hosts contact info until you have booked on the website.
      As for paying for anything in Argentina, it is ALWAYS better to pay cash using the Blue Dollar. If you arrive in Argentina with USD we suggest you exchange it using the method we showed in the video. By converting your USD to Argentinian Pesos on the black market you will get double the amount of Pesos the bank would give you if you were to exchange your USD for pesos at an official exchange. Then you can use the Argentinian Pesos you exchanged to pay for everything! We promise it isn't as daunting or scary in real life as it might seem online! Most travelers in Argentina know about the process so if you are in doubt when you get there you can definitely ask around and see if someone can give you a hand!

    well... you know it's not good for our economy that you exchange your dollars at those places, it's better to do it at the bank! that way you are helping to the illegal market so... it's going to be worst for the official rate.

      Thanks for letting us know. We heard many people rely on these dollar exchanges to secure their savings from inflation because getting dollars otherwise was very difficult (compared to the banks) due to strict currency controls. We hope the situation stabilizes again soon.

      Seguro sos peronista para culpar a un extranjero por lo que fomenta el gobierno con su política nefasta de controles cambiarios. Mil veces mejor Western Union que cualquier banco argentino para acceder a dinero siendo extranjero.

      @@raquelgatica4721 si es mejor western union, nah nada que ver no le culpo, pasa que no sabe que eso incentiva al mercado ilegal, onda alguna vez fuiste a esas cuevas a cambiar dolares? los controles cambiaros estan para que no pase lo que paso con la liberacion del cepo, que se llevaron todos los dolares y por eso estamos como estamos ahora jeeee
