thank you so much for explaining wavelets, very helpful!

great tutorial but i couldn't get past the linear mask thing ...I had linear mask ticked, inverted mask ticked, RGB/K OR Luminance selected... I then hit the preview button and the the preview suddenly changed from black, to white, to pink, to green etc etc when gently moving the sliders, and when i did finally get a predominantly white image with black protected stars, there was no way to smoothly adjust the mask levels... it would suddenly change again when the amplification or smoothness hit a certain level.. i am using a combined RGB from an OSC via WBPP..... ive been trying to use PIX for the past three months and i always get stuck at this same point ... sometimes i can get MLT to work to some degree but it still looks awful and blotchy,.. i then have to move on to other processes having learned nothing about MLT and only seem to emphasising awful data... i have similar problems with Histogram Transformation...again, it's very clunky, nothing behaves as per any tutorial and all my data is slammed all the way to the left... i'm beginning to wonder if my output should be something other than .xisf...or change the bit depth?... or some other random setting that clashes with my data...fyi, i do have the correct Bayer matrix.

      a) Even I did a tutorial on MLT, if you are serious about denoising, get NoiseXTerminator - it is a million times better and easier then MLT.
      b) You seem to have an issue with your pics based on what you describe - .xisf is definitely fine. Please send me a pic resp. a download link and I will see where the issue is.
