Hi there! In your video, you often refer to this telescope versus a "real rig." I just wanted to share that this is indeed a real rig-granted, it's a small one-but it's no less worthy because of its size. The great thing about these small smart scopes is that they allow anyone to go from deciding to do some astro-imaging to actually capturing images in just a few minutes. Bigger rigs can be time-consuming to set up, and here in the UK, where we mostly have cloudy nights, the clouds might have moved in by the time a larger rig is ready. That's the real strength of these small smart scopes! They're definitely useful for people who are into astrophotography for the reasons I've mentioned. They're just a different type of scope compared to traditional ones, but every bit as "real."
So you say in the end now just process these three images like you would mono. I've never processed mono images so don't really know what to do or how to combine them at all.
Have a look at my SHO tutorial - ruclips.net/video/YMvgfmPkn-g/видео.html
I am so happy to see a realistic and balanced review of this scope's capabilities, thanks for focus on image quality but also on what its potential place is.
Man, you chucked that box and I hit the subscribe button immediately - thanks for not doing yet another tedious unboxing 😂
I hope that this model is more reliable than my ASUStor AS4002T which died a little after 3 years since purchase, and just out of ASUStor warranty. I am now looking at other brands as I was not happy with the support from ASUStor.
Good video thanks, what was the target with the star in the middle and red nebula?
That was the Butterfy nebula in the Sadr region
I wanted to see what camera would work with an Askar SQA55 and/or FRA400 based on the software, Astronomy Tools. It showed the ASI715MC is better than the ASI533MC or ASI2600MC-Pro. Should I then get the ASI715MC even though it would be nice to have the integrated guiding camera?
No, you should not. The 715 is an uncooled planetary camera with a small sensor, which would give you an extremely small field of view. The 2600/533 work from their pixel size perfectly with most scopes and are really the default today with good reason.
THANK YOU! I love how you take each parameter of the process to explain its effect on the image. Well done! Keep up the good work.
You just seem salty that other people got their product before you. Act your age ffs.
Hey, I have a c9.25 xlt and have just set up the starizona IV. As a result , even if going through the whole focus course , I see nothing anymore on the frames of the camera , even if Inshoot the moon. I mean I see like a flat. If I put a light in the tube , it does saturated though so it is not like if there is something in between the light course. Any idea what can happen ? I am lost! I have a bit too long of back focus, meaning , from the start of the farthest lens of the starizona from the telescope to the camera I have 92mm. I will adjust but this can’t explain me having like a flat when targeting a full moon ??
Thank for anybody reading this and who could help 🙏🙏
Check these things (and yes, they sound obvious but sometimes we overlook things: - If you have before a Celestron Reducer, ensure it is not installed anymore - Ensure the Starizone Reducer is installed correctly - right at the back of the telescope - Read again the backfocus requirement from Starizona for your scope and ensure this is accurate. - Ensure you have the Reducer in the right direction installed If all these things are checked, and you can not get a focussed pic of the moon, there reducer might be defective.
hi, i have a dwarf 3 and S30 on preorder too ^^ and i have an S50. take 10 sec picture, you will get better result. you need more pictures to stack, but it is not as blury at the side. and if you activate mosaic, you do not care about field rotation. my opinion is the same. the S50, Dwarf 3 and S30 are the best for beginners and advanced too.
Thanks a lot for the tip, will try it out the next time I have clear sky!!!!
Regarding ssd. If I want 2 ssd as cache and the other 2 as storage but don't want raid1 because not bothered about backup on another one, which raided option should be used. Raid5?. The setup would be 2 x 2tb ssd as cache 2 x 4tb ssd as storage 1 x had 6tb as storage Primarily to use system as Plex server. Thanks. AJ
RAID5 needs at least 3 HD/SDD of similar size to work. To not doing any backup, use RAID 0. BTW, have a look at Jellyfin before moving to Plex, as it is free and works great!
Excellent review! And thank you for skipping yet another unboxing. I have a rig comprised on the AM5, AA+, and Redcat 61, and this combination is a pleasure to use and produces excellent deep space images. So as much as I want both of the Seestars to produce great images, I haven’t seen an image from them yet that I would be happy with. Given that, I will pass on both of them and devote my time this week to trying to find focus on the used Celestron 8se I bought by using the ZWO EAF set to very small increments. Wish me good mental health!
I see you really like a good challenge 😄 Good luck!!!
I'm new to astro photography. I have watched several videos. I processed a couple of image sets in GIMP to see how that works and watched a few videos on how to use GIMP. I watched 12 videos of this series so far and the advice given appears to be the fast track to success in this hobby. I watched several other videos on various topics, but none are concise and in one location as this is. As mentioned in this first video, don't buy anything until the entire series has been watched or you will waste money. I watched a video of a guy in Washington state, USA who replaced his first rig, selling the pieces and getting a William Optics RedCat51 and the other parts and he said he was finally able to take clear pictures after much frustration with the first rig. I was expecting to be able to get a rig for $2000 or so but I was wrong! The mount is or nearly is half that! I put 5 rigs in a spreadsheet, ranging from just over $5K to $7222, the latter price was with ZWO ASIAir, ASI 2600MC-Pro Duo camera, ZWO focuser, Antilia filter, etc. and ZWO AM5 harmonic mount with tripod. I am thinking of the Askar FRA400 with 0.7x reducer for a better range over the RedCat51. $5740 for the AM3, Askar FRA400, ASI533MC Pro camera and misc. things. As shown in video 12, the ZWO ASIAir with the ASI2600MC-Pro-Duo greatly simplifies the setup over Nina. ASIAir PC/controller greatly simplifies the process for beginners like me. I figure I would later try setting up Nina with a MeLE Quiter PC to experience that. I greatly appreciate the tremendous work in creating this series. Saves so much time and likely money for all of us. It jumped start my path in this hobby.
Thanks for your review, it's really interesting. I would like to know if stacking several photos of the sun improves the resolution of the spots. And the same thing about the moon: if you stack several photos, does the resolution of the craters increase? I do not plan to stack photos in an external program, but I am thinking of buying this telescope, I only have doubts between the S30 and the S50 due to the resolution of the sun and the moon. Thank you.
Stacking does not really help here - the low resolution is most likely the biggest disadvantage of this scope. If ultra portability is not the main requirement for you, I would go with the S50.
@viewintospace I have problems with lifting weights, that is why I have doubts. Otherwise I would definitely choose the S50
DWARF 3 is not far away also has equatorial mode and can expose for 1min , so im gonna hold on for a while
Sure, I believe both lines have their advantages.
Excellent Video Sasha! I am coming from DS imaging and have 0 experience in lunar/planetary. Your video is like the second (editing) half that later I want to utilize, but I am missing the first (acquisition) half. Using an ASIAir, ASI2600mm and the Askar FRA400 - I figure to just use video mode and adapt the settings to not blow out highlights. But what would be a recommended video length (the moon is rotating after all) and max. resolution (460p, 1080p …)? Also, how does drizzling work for lunar? Same as DS, would I have to dither the mount?
Just put it in video mode, choose the highest resolution and shoot for 5 mins. In video mode there is no dither. And then proceed with the processing as outlined in the video.
@@viewintospace Appreciate the immediate response. Autostakkert has a drizzle mode - can I just use it based on that one 5 min video I took or is there any additional task to be done during aquisition? And one more question. I do not have a dedicated IR filter like you are showing, but I have SHO LRGB filters. My assumption is L would be the best filter to use. Or is there any benefit in using more than just one filter and combine it somehow?
@ I would just use the L filter. And sorry, no clue about the drizzle mode in Autostakkert.
Excellent review! 🙂👏 I own a S50 but ordered the S30 because I aim to do some wide field Milky Way shots that easily.
Space koala said that the wide lens can’t be used for astrophotography unfortunately. And the normal lens is still way too zoomed in to do the milky way unless you do one giant mosaic
@@shinyy187 So the light pollution filter deosn't work in wide field mode?
Great review Sasha. I already have the C8 Hyperstar AVX and 2600MC Pro and process in Pixinsight. I did have the S30 on pre order but decided to go with the S50 due to the detail issues you showed of the moon. I have seen some well processed images with the S50 that come very close to a larger rig. My main use case is Lunar,Solar and using the S50 for those nights that have friends and family over or I just do not feel like setting up my astro rig. I also will be trying to see what kinds of images I can create from the S50 using the raw fits in Pixinsight.
Makes perfect sense. If ultra-portability is not absolutely required, I think the S50 is the better choice.
At about 11:47, you are talking about Raid 1 and ext4 file system. Then at 11:57, your screen shot has BTRFS selected and Raid 5 selected. Can you provide an explanation of what happened here or maybe do a follow up video?
For the SDDs, use RAID 1 and Ext4. For the HDs, use RAID5 and BTRFS.
i have seen other workflows compared to yours so i must ask this question, before doing SPCC, others have used blurx first in correction only mode. is this wrong
This tutorial was made when BXT was still in version 1.0. With BXT 2.0 it can in some situations be recommended, like when you have chromatic aberrations in your stars, to do a BXT run with correct only before SPCC and then a full BXT again after SPCC. Wrong would be to do a full BXT before SPCC.
Thanks for showing images from it instead of a silly unboxing. After watching the video I have decided that I won’t be buying one of them. I already have a Seestar s50 that I rarely use because the poor image quality compared to my big Astro rig. I think I will probably just get a Redcat 51 to use for wide field astrophotography since the image quality will be much better.
Definitely the right choice. If the S50 has a too low image quality for you, the S30 makes no sense at all. Going then with a real telescope will be the much better option.
Tbh I expected a bit better, the results look pretty bad ^^ Thanks for the review, I thought about getting it for a moment.
If you want it a bit better, get the S50. Size really matters when it comes to telescopes, and so the decrease in size of the S30 has its drawbacks
@@viewintospace I hoped that the shorter focal length would be able to give a bit better results as there will be less field rotation, but the S50 is in my opinion pretty bad too :)
No hace falta criticar a otros RUclipsrs, además no creo que hacer o no un unboxing sea determinante, si no te gusta puedes adelantarlo. Crítica constructiva y respetuosa.
This is not criticism as all, it is just fun. If I would have received the Seestar first, I would also have included the unboxing. But knowing myself, how sick and tired I get sometimes of everybody doing exactly the same, I decided as already so many unboxing videos were published I would skip it, and communicated that in a hopefully funny way.
@@viewintospacePues no es lo que parece cuando ves el vídeo, pero me alegro de que la verdadera intención no era criticar a otros RUclipsrs ni pensar que Usted hace los vídeos mejor que los demás. Feliz domingo
great video! People love to see more images than unboxing just for an example
As a person with more than one full rig.... and a s50 and when they start to ship the the s30 I will have on of them as well, I can say with out a drought that it is fun and very handy to have. Ok so the images you get are for social media like said in the video your not going to get a apod. When I'm imaging, I use my seestar s50 or s30 (when I get it) to have a look at other targets and work out if I want to spend time with my main on them. Now I have done some test to compare the seestar to my rigs, so if I do say a quick say 20min with it I know that I should get a image of X quality depending on my setup ie if I'm using the rasa it's like sub 5 min for something like the seestar (visual similar not quality of the image). So before any one go and says the the FOV is different yes I know but my sky conditions are the same (for the most part) and knowing the difference I get between the rigs helps decide on what setup if any I would use for said target.
Great point and use case!!!! Thanks for sharing!
thank you for this video! the pictures look awesome! I cant wait for mine to come in the mail!
Getting back into the hobby after many years. Didnt even know "Smart" telescopes existed til a few days ago. My grandson is old enough to be interested and I really want him to see things with his own eyes, but at the same time I want to finally be able to take some cool images. Im from the school of bigger is better, so I think I will go with the S50 and maybe a 10" dob of some sort.
It seems like every youtuber Astrophotographer is reviewing these POS's Seriously over it.
I can very much relate! But look at it from this side - it is not about watching all of them, it is about that you have a choice of different content providers....
@@viewintospace nah as soon as I see any seestar videos I tend to not watch them through and it's obvious ZWO are promoting them when you see them all over youtube
So... just don't watch? 🤷♂️
@@millenialfalcon8243 If I wanted your opinion I'd ask for it, don't be rude. I was talking to Sasha not you.
Thanks for concentrating on the results, I see no reason to stray from my S50!
The lightweight form factor makes it easy for equatorial mounting.
Excellent review. For years I have owned an LX200-GPS & an ETX-105. A few months ago I purchased a Seestar S50. In all honesty I have had more fun, and seen more things, with the S50 than in all the years I owned the larger scopes. Better still is I did so from the comfort of my warm office instead of freezing my butt off peering into an eyepiece. I now have an S30, along with a Dwarf 3, on preorder. I also ordered an S30 as Christmas gifts for a few family members. The Seestar is so simple to use for the absolute amateur & the price is fantastic.
You sum it up perfectly!!!!
Another well-balanced presentation Sascha. Thanks. It's a pity you haven't had the opportunity to try a Seestar S50.
Good man!we don’t need unboxing nonsense!👍
I love the Eagle technology. My older Eagle4 Pro uses the Windows 10 OS. Can you explain how I could upgrade my Eagle to Windows 11
Quite honestly, I would not do the update. There is so much specific software on it, you can really mess this up and then you have to send the Eagle to Italy that they get it working again....
Outstanding job thank you!
Clear and concise as with the ither videos.
Frank is absolutely killing it!!! He IS changing the Astro Photo world and putting it's on its head. I don't think he sleeps...😅
I have learned something in each of these videos.
Hi, I'm under a Bortle 9 sky, Would you still recommend this filter for me? If not, which filter do you think I should use? Great video, Thank you.
From a light pollution filter point of view, there is nothing better. It will not make your pics perfect, but it will make the light pollution manageable. What I would recommend for you is definitely to go as narrow as you can when you shoot narrowband. There is a new Antlia ALP-T 3nm filter out there - I would very much recommend that one.
@@viewintospace Thank you so much.
Very informative! A great start to this hobby. I was hoping for $2K but after looking at mounts, realized a higher budget will be needed. Or go with the Dwarf III or S50.
This matches my experiences. Always an improvement over IR/UV in Bortle 4/5
At $400, I'll pass for now. However calibrating out dust is a pain. The other issue for me, is having multiple kits. I have 2 or 3 permanent setups. The expense of filters and the FW.
What is reality??
A loaded question 😉 May I suggest this video: Is ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY real? Is it SCIENCE OR ART????? ruclips.net/video/PtcvUp37B9U/видео.html
This is an INCREDIBLE resource for beginners. Congratulations - and thank you - for putting such a comprehensive and thoughtful series together. Sadly I've only just found your channel - after crawling over the internet for 12+ months hunting for material and watching countless videos - this really struck a chord for me! Thank you :-)
So happy to hear!!!!
I purchased this filter about 10 months ago after watching.a review in the Dark Rangers youTube channel. I use a C8 (non HD) and ASI071MC Pro OSC with OAG and I've only been imaging for about a year. I noticed when I purchased it from AstroAgena a warning on the description page that halos were not a defect on the filter and a return wouldn't be allowed. I purchased anyway. Bright stars do have halos but yours seemed better than my C8 but I'm shooting at 1400 mm and bright stars will show a pronounced a halo because they show up bigger. I notice when using a bright star to check focus at lower exposures the halo diminishes. Even without the filter bright stars have some halo on my C8. When I say bright star it's a major star like Alnitak or the bright star in the Western Veil nebula or one of the major stars of Cassiopeia near the Ghost of Cassiopeia. Most of the time for galaxies and nebulas like Pac Man, Dumbell, Iris, Elephant Trunk the filter brings works well. But I also have read that other manufacturers filters will have halos around bright stars. I have no experience using other manufacturers light pollution filters. I'm now in a Bortle 7 area and I'm shooting the Wizard Nebula and I'll be able to compare these new frames from a Bortle 4 area a week or two ago. Thanks
Thanks for sharing! Antlia has this warning on all of their filters are I really like that. They are not overselling their products but are very transparent about what it can do and what not.
Just used this on M45 too, but with much trepidation. I was not sure about the band pass for a reflection nebula but the result was very pleasing!
What color camera did you use? Did it have an AR window or an UV/IR cut window? That quad band filter becomes a tri-band filter if your camera has an UV/IR cut window since the 4th band 760nm - 800nm is blocked.
So the ASI533 would be a good match for this filter. I'm wondering about star bloat. Any idea if that's a concern?
Not really - I did measure in one comparison the PSF has it is practically the same
I have the ASI2600MC Air, so yes, that part is blocked
love your tips, thanks
