this is a very helpful video. I like to watch quilting videos but very few show you how to put the quilt layers together after you make the block. I don't have a long arm quilter either and it is highly unlikely I will be purchasing one, nor do I want to send my quilts out to be quilted. I like finishing them myself, so I do as your video shows. I stretch it out on the floor, table or bed, pin and then quilt with my domestic machine. Quilting is usually stitch in the ditch or something similar. It works out very nice and pretty. I also use the "quilt as you go" method very frequently. It is a wonderful method of quilting in small sections. It was helpful for me to see how you placed the pins, I never knew the reason they were bent. Thanks for this video.
Oh thank you soooo much!! I do my best to bring something a little bit different to the table instead of just rehashing the same old thing. And I do like to show the reality of doing this at home. To be honest, I would happily send out quilt tops for finishing. I would not bat an eyelash!! But unfortunately, my budget doesn't allow for that. I'm not interested in doing my own long arm work because that's a skill unto itself. Just making the quilt top is a big skill! Every step is it's own process and skill set. I appreciate your thoughtful comment!
I love the idea of 5x5 and 5x8 inch blocks! I am using men's dress shirts to make baby quilts to donate and this will be a perfect size to cut everything out. I will use the strips for binding! P.S. we just rescued to cats and we are amazed at the cost of the vet bills. Thank goodness for the Neutering clinic!
It's so much fun to do these. I did write a blog post on it you might enjoy pattymacmakes.com/easiest-quilt-for-beginners/. Thank goodness that was covered!! Vet bills are out of sight! As is the pet food. I would not be in a position to even take it on right now. Unfortunately.
I did see your blog post and was inspired! Thank you! I have watched other videos about cutting fabric to store but could never figure out a size piece that would be practical for me!
Thanks Bex!! I'm kind of surprised by how much I love the result of this simple pattern. And, yes, I don't think I'll ever get over the way Blueprint destroyed our beloved Craftsy.
I also use pins to baste my quilts, and it used to be hard on my hands as well. Since I began using the "Kwik Klip" tool to close the pins, I have no more pain in association with basting, and am able to finish basting in one day. It is a great tool, and I highly recommend it! Thanks for another great video & have a great day! ☺
Oh thank you!!! I'll definitely look into that! I use my hands so much and my wrists and hands will rebel from time to time. At this stage I need all the help I can get!
I've had other viewers express the same concern in previous videos. I almost hesitated to film myself doing it this way because of that, but it is the way I do things and I like to present myself as honestly as possible here. But it's definitely not the only way to do things. Bless you and thank you for watching. I do appreciate it.
It's sad but true!! The vet bills are ridiculous at this point. And the food. Plus the dog!! I'm partial to Golden Retrievers but that's a $1200 dog. So that's just not happening.
Hi Patti. When I was learning to baste the teacher had us tape each layer with masking tape tight, then pin baste them. Thank you for showing us another way. Very pretty quilt.
Patty, have you seen the XL quilting clamps the madam sew sells? They are wonderful for keeping your rolled section in place while you are quilting on domestic machine! And they are on sale often! They come 6 to a box!
Thank you for this helpful video. 😊 I just love your cheerful quilt top ❤️ It looks like 'Spring'! P.S. I really miss shopping on Blueprint too. I really loved buying their FQ bundles. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt.
You're welcome!! Thank you for watching! I have one FQ left from Blueprint in a collection that was my favorite. I'm saving it for something really special. What I don't know! LOL It does look springy doesn't it? It's so dreary here this time of year, I'm glad for these bright colors. I'm pretty excited to get it finished up! Working on binding today after I get home from the gym!
Your quilt is gorgeous! I feel you pain over bluprint! I used my entire spool of peachy pink quilting some beautiful fabric for bench cushions-it literally disappeared into the design. Wish I cd get more! I loved their fabrics and when they had a sale, man oh man did they spoil us w good prices!!! And those 6” strips? Perfect for so many things! However, when they decided to go out, I was so concerned abt not losing my classes (& that’s how I found your channel, BTW) but I was never notified they were hvg a clearance sale! 😱I missed the whole thing! Then months later I saw some posts abt how ppl had made out like bandits! Wish I had known! I miss them for their wonderful supplies! 😩 Plus, since I was a member, I got free shipping on all supply orders, and man did that spoil me!!! I HATE paying shipping for supplies now!
I'm so happy to know I'm not the only one who is still not over that whole thing!! LOL It should a college class on what not to do when closing a business. It was sickening. I loved the supplies and bought yarns and fabrics and got a few of those thread kits. I joined the new Craftsy website but I don't love it. It's expensive and a lot of classes are not even part of the membership. I have about 50 classes in my forever library so I need to contact them and make sure I can still access those courses without having to pay that exorbitant membership. It's a lot of knitting stuff which I don't care much about anymore but I don't want to lose my embroidery and sewing and quilting classes. They don't make any new content and it's just the same stuff from years ago but less so because so many aren't even available. I should do an update video on the whole thing.
@@PattymacMakes Yes, you can access your purchased classes w/o paying the membership fee. And yes, their reg price is high. But . . . if you let your membership expire, they often have specials for “new members” (ie: you are new if your membership has expired) that only costs a cpl dollars for a whole year! Not kidding! I don’t remember how I found out abt that. I was on the auto renew on bluprint and when it changed over to the new craftsy, low and behold, they continued charging me the annual fee!!! That was one of the years when my apt kept flooding and I spent months in a hotel, during Covid, no less, and I didn’t get to use it, at all!!! The new craftsy ppl hv zero compassion! Not only did I loose several class credits I had coming (bc the deadline was when the flood was happening) but they showed no consideration for my circumstances. I told them to check my account, as I had never once logged in; I didn’t even have a password set up. They said they had no way of knowing that and there was no way to check. I think I had been charged abt $80 for the year’s membership. They wdnt credit squat! But eventually offered me a slight discount on the next year. I said “No thank you!” Then I learned abt the real discount. It costs like maybe $2.50 or something. Same company owns the knitting circle and a similarly named crochet circle or some such thing and also woodworkers guild. You’ll see they send emails all the time to join for a few bucks to all those groups. Just make sure to get off the auto renew policy, or you will be renewed at full price, when your year is up. I believe you have to call them to get off auto renew, if I remember correctly. That’s what I did. I used to love the old Craftsy/Bluprint classes! But the shine has worn off over this whole fiasco, and I hardly ever go on there now, except to look something up. But the cpl bucks is worth it to be able to whenever I want to. But still, it was not a happy experience for me. 😐
@@susanmei9980 Oh yeah, that's not good at all!! What an insult to the injury you already had going on! I'll go ahead and cancel the auto renew because $113 is too expensive. I've had craftsy and bluprint so long I pretty much have watched what I want to watch from them now. I do like my embroidery classes and the big startup library classes and I don't want to lose those or the class materials. I'm thinking about starting up my embroidery again because I really enjoyed it and that start up library class is excellent. I do think I will want to try some garment sewing later this year as I lose more weight and have some options in terms of clothing again. I'd love to make my own cute blouses and things like that, but nothing fits well right now so I don't want to spend the time and effort and expense on sewing for myself when it's just going to look like a sack of potatoes. I'm almost half way to my goal so my plan is to be a little more aggressive and lose the rest of this before summer comes back around. Anyway, I would be nice to have classes to show me how to set sleeves and do bust adjustments and so on that are unique to garments.
I have played with it a little, but wow. That's really a specialized skill to do it well. It's so time consuming and iit uses so much thread. If I'm being honest, I would happily send everything out for quilting and just put my time on the piecing and writing patterns. The rest of the process is kind of a slog, but I feel so accomplished when it's done.
I do for a lot of Ruby Star fabrics because they are special. It's kind of a cult thing in the Ruby Star community to leave selvages on in a lot of instances. Some people sew strips using only the selvages they cut off.

Such a pretty quilt & the green backing goes perfect with it.

Totally agree with your opinion on dogs. I LOVE THEM, but they have become a luxury item.
