    If you resin it all down, Wont the Kevlar be way more brittle? From the Body armour test videos ive seen, it appears the Kevlar works so well as soft armour is because it cushions the bullet and wont let it pass through. Absorbing the rounds power output and stopping it from penetrating the torso.
    Surely this would crack much easier. if you have materials spare, try make another but stack it all up and only resin the outside edges before sticking it inside a makeshift vest carrier and attempting it again.
    It'd be very interesting to see the results of them stacked up side by side with them being put under a lot more torture.

      Brittle would break the bullet into peices in some applications. Shattering it dissipates energy too.
      Our plane's armor was a third kevlar, and two thirds something else. I can't remember lol. The small layer breaks the bullet, and the thicker layer protects against the shards. That's what i was told, anyway.

      Kevlar/Aramid

    • @northflfishingadventures
      @northflfishingadventures 8 лет назад

      +nobodyprepper I mean the type of Kevlar. If it was Kevlar 49 that isn't bulletproof. If it's Kevlar 29 or 129 that's the bullet resistant type.

      I have this information...Kevlar® 29 (K29)The original family of product types of Kevlar®, having similar tensile properties with many deniers and finishes. These yarns are used in ballistic applications, ropes and cables, protective apparel such as cut-resistant gloves, in life protection uses such as helmets, vehicular armoring, and plates, and as rubber reinforcement in tires and automotive hoses. Kevlar® 129Lightweight, high-performance, and high-tenacity type of yarns used in motorcycle racing gear, life protection accessories, ropes and cables, and high-pressure hoses used in the oil and gas industry. ONLY THE Kevlar® KM2Woven into fabric meeting performance requirements for helmets and vests for military and high-performing UDs for spall liners.Kevlar® KM2 PlusHigh tenacity, high toughness, and finer denier fiber used in vests and helmet for both military and law enforcement officers.

    Hey man, thanks for the awesome video. Want to try this myself, could you tell me what resin and catalyst you were using to stick the layers together? Also did you by any chance check it with a gun? Because 19 layers is IIIA when its vaccum sealed and stuff., but the fact its diy maybe affects the performance a lot more? Thanks man

      +Desbiez Peter thanks ... I recommend buying military surplus,
      this is just an experiment.
      I used normal resin ...
      in the future I'll do a test with a 9mm

    Resins ruins the catch factor it’s made to flex and catch bullets

    • @armyalooftv7481
      @armyalooftv7481 4 года назад

      scott roberts I don’t think so, you put resin in every layer so the fiber glass/Kevlar separates from the other layer and disperses a lot of energy, it’s made to crumple and bulge.

  • @scoobysnacks332
    @scoobysnacks332 7 лет назад +8

    I read somewhere that 28 layers of any ballistic Kevlar is = 3A

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 7 лет назад +1

      Few fabrics are straight kevlar. Lots of different blends exist 28 layers is a rule of thumb, but actual ratings depends on a real world test and certification. For home builders, you don't need the certification but can duplicate the test yourself if you have firearms.

    • @joscythe556
      @joscythe556 3 года назад

      Reinforcing Fabric can have different areal weights (grams per square meter) which in turn have different thicknesses and thus the amount of layers you need obviously depends on the specific fabric you use.
      The angles at which the fabric layers are arranged and the type of resin as well as the curing temperature also have an influence.

    Nice videos, try some 9mm ammo, are you from russia? or ukraine?

  • @TheFishCostume
    @TheFishCostume 7 лет назад +4

    If you're going to make epoxy composite body armor, you might as well just use fiberglass or carbon fiber. Kevlar is generally weaker all around but also has an exceptionally bad (relatively) compressive strength when used in an epoxy composite, making it a bad candidate for this type of application. At the very least, if you really want to use Kevlar, you should make a fiberglass or carbon fiber core and put a few layers of Kevlar on the outside for abrasion resistance.

    • @TheFishCostume
      @TheFishCostume 7 лет назад

      +Calvin Krueger Not necessarily. E glass has a pretty similar tensile strength to Kevlar, but Kevlar has roughly half the compressive strength. You are right that carbon fiber isn't a very good material for stopping bullets, but neither is this type of Kevlar.

  • @vernvoetberg7774
    @vernvoetberg7774 3 года назад

    Ok he’s using Kevlar. But you just don’t go to the fabric store and buy a whole roll of Kevlar. And if you can find it. It’s not cheap.

    • @vovin8132
      @vovin8132 Год назад

      There are ways to get it. Don't mind the old stuff either. As long as it has been kept on the roll and in a package away from light, it should still be good for decades. They say kevlar armour is only good for so many years but this has more to do with wear and tear, not from the fabric itself magically dissolving.

    • @nobodyprepper

      the kevlar helmets are rigid
      I think they use the resin

    • @Tremulousnut
      @Tremulousnut 7 лет назад

      nobodyprepper Some countries/companies use resin, some use special plastic sheets which bond the aramid layers under pressure.

  • @jdovak1589
    @jdovak1589 8 лет назад +4

    Why on earth did you start the molding off a bunch of wrinkled up and stuck together duct tape???😒 Dont U think a flat surface would be a better starting point?? The Kevlar would be epoxied without air in between the layers making it much thinner and stronger...
