  • How to fix an ugly lawn is a question a lot of home owners face. In this video series, we'll document a process that YOU can follow to transform your ugly lawn to a golf course lawn. It starts with getting weeds under control. Depending on how bad the weeds are we can accomplish this from manually pulling the weeds or by using a combination herbicide and per-emergent product. I prefer go the granular route for this step since it's very effective while minimizing damage to the grass.
    In this video we walk through my next door neighbor Alex's lawn to survey the situation. Next we apply my weed control and pre-emergent of choice to start the process of getting the weeds under control. Our goal is to improve his lawn over this season by implementing a serious lawn care program. We'll transform his ugly lawn to a golf course lawn. My hope is that this series will be help to any home owners wanting to do the same thing with their lawn.
    You'll get lawn tips on how to get rid of weeds, top dress your lawn, and apply fertilizers to transform what you currently have to the lawn of your dreams. A huge part of having a golf course lawn is using the right mower. So expect to learn all about reel mowers and why you should consider one for your project. Stay tuned!

      I watched your How to Fix an ugly lawn series… does this process also work for centipede grass? If so, what time of year do you start? Also, I know you talked about preemergent and postemergent, what do you recommend and when do you apply?

I wrote to you some time ago as I am a renter and no control over mowing, but I was able to reseed and compost then put tarp over the damaged area from there tractor mower. And it is so amazing and I am at about three inches. My brother bought a battery-operated weed trimmer since I am not allowed to now.

Punched holes yesterday and put down some fungicide late yesterday along with some natural 20-0-8 fert with 2% iron. Already did after some milo and liquid iron 2 weeks ago. Going to level the yard probably late July early August to allow for the Arden time to establish. Still deciding on what reel mower to get. Ron I had to come back and look at this series. My husband put this down after mowing and the weeds haven’t come back as strong. I’m super impressed. And we did this 2 days before it was supposed to rain. The backyard is still looking terrible, but the front looks so different. Thanks for these videos.
    Question for you though: can we put down a post emergent now that we’ve had this down for a week or so?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +1

      Umm... You can an Amy, but keep in mind that Spectracide is a combination pre and post emergent product. If you want a post emergent that can be applied using a hose end sprayer, get the Spectracide ready to spray with the orange top. amzn.to/3eRE0p1 Once you apply that, the weeds should be hating life so all that's left to do is a lot of mowing. Growing a thick, healthy lawn is one of the best weed controls. We only want to use herbicides to get ahead of weeds if at all possible. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Hello Ron. I have reached out to you twice since subscribing to your channel and I appreciate the speed by which you have replied. Even better, within the past 30-40 days my lawn has moved from being just ok to the envy of the whole neighborhood using your advice and videos so be encouraged. I have a few spots that have not grown all the way in but otherwise it looks awesome. I plan to top dress this weekend and I have some significant divots in the lawn. I would like to know should I focus on top dressing exclusively or can I do both dressing and divot/uneven surface repair at the same time. If so what material should I use i.e. sand or a finely screened compost or some mix in between. Do I use one material for topdressing only and another method for repairing holes? I hope this makes sense. Also my lines do not look as pronounced as yours do after I mow. I wonder if I am still cutting too high. I can see the pattern in my lawn when I look closely but not as clear as your lines come through in your videos. I have the same rotary mower as you do and I have it set to 1 inch. Lastly how frequently do you get your Tru-Cut serviced i.e. blades sharpened, bed knife aligned, chain oiled, spark plugs etc. Thank you........Q

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

      Heya Queron. Congrats on making the decision to top dress your lawn. It's a lot of work, but you'll love the results you get. As far as repairing divots while top dressing, that's totally possible. It just depends on how big of a divot we're talking. Ideally you don't want to completely cover up the underlying grass since that will seriously increase how long it takes for the turf to recover. For the divot areas, you can use a more screen sand and then top it with your top dress mix. I use a 70/30 split on my lawn. It won't hurt to fill the divots with the same top dress material but because the organic content will eventually break down, you'll find that you'll get a bit of sinking in a year or 2.
      Depending on how deep the divots/ruts are, it will probably take a few top dress sessions to get it where you want it. I've fully top dressed my lawn twice and I still have a few areas that I touch up now and then due to wear. In regards to my mower, I don't have a rotary. My Tru-Cut is a reel mower with a front roller which helps it produce the stripes. Once your lawn is top dressed, you should get better stripes because the roller will stay in contact better with the turf. For Bermuda, you get the best stripes at mowing heights of .75 - 1 inch. If that's the height you're cutting at, you should see decent stripes. I typically service my mower once per season. Reel sharpening, oil and filter change, etc. I oil the chains once per month on my own using a chain lubricant. Hope this helps. 😎👍

      Hi Charlene. My grass is Tifway 419 Bermuda overseeded with Princess 77 and Arden 15. You absolutely can get a golf course lawn look with centipede and bahia grass. You'll have to mow them a bit higher than bermuda 1.5 - 2" but can still achieve a great look. Kind of like what I outlined in my "how to get a golf course lawn" video, you'll want to top dress the lawn so that you can mow it at those lower heights with less chance of scalping the turf. Initially started cutting our bermudagrass that we got sodded last fall from 3" most of this year, to recently 2" to now 1.5". The grass is sparse obviously given the height of the cut initially, but how long do you expect it to start thickening up.. is this a rest of the year process or should it start thickening up quickly? I can already tell a big difference in terms of the feel of stepping on it. The grass recently got a nice feeding of milo so what's there is really greening up nicely. I'm in North Texas. Should the spectracide weed product for weeds not be applied when it’s too hot?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

      Hi Jerry. Ideally you want to apply it early in the morning when the turf is wet so that it can stick to the leaves of the weeds. Apply when lawn is wet but when you also don't expect rain in the forecast for 16 - 24 hours. It has a pre-emergent in it as well so Spectracide will help prevent new weeds from growing in. Don't apply it when the lawn is dry because it won't be as effective. I recently made a video covering it's use as well as other weed control options. Hi Ron. My husband has been watching your videos and has appreciated the great advice on how to have a golf course lawn. He and I have been in our new home for about 9 months now and he decided on sodding our backyard with zoysia grass before we moved in. It looks ok, doesn't have weeds, but he wants that golf course look. We live in Texas, more specifically, San Antonio. Would he apply the same principles for zoysia and you use for Bermuda grass? Our backyard slopes away from our home and he is planning on mowing it low and top dressing it around the first week in July. Is it too late in the season to do this? We have not had any significant rain since April. Any advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    • @RonHenry

      Hi Lucinda. Yep! Same principles apply. Soil testing, fertilization program and top dressing. It's not too late in the season to top dress. Now is a great time if he can tolerate being out in the heat.
      You're good to top dress between April and early August. As long as the grass is actively growing, you're ok. It would be good if you the ability to water the lawn after top dressing; even if that means dragging hoses out to do it. You can get a soil test here: golfcourselawn.store/products/mysoil-starter-pack It will let you know exactly what kind of fertilizer you should be using on your lawn. Have to like being out in the yard if you're going to take it on. I used to play quite a bit of golf. I just can bring myself to hit a wedge off my turf! 😎👍

    When is a good time to apply the weed stop? Does it matter? I assume once in the late winter and once in the late summer similar to pre emergent? Thanks for your time sir.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +2

      Hi Lucas. Whenever the weeds are actively growing. If you're using it as pre-emergent you'd want to apply in the fall and early spring before soil temps cross 50 - 55 degrees. If you're using it as post emergent (to kill active weeds) you'll want to ensure the weeds are damp so the product can stick to them. Let me know if I can help with anything else. 👍😎

    Hi Ron,
    I'm working on renovating our lawn. Major leveling and putting down a nice fine blade Bermuda seed.
    In areas that I have uncontrollable shade what type of grass would you suggest that would blend well? (color, blade thickness, ability to be cut at an inch?)

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  Год назад +2

      Hi Alex. Depending on how much shade you have, Zoysia could work. It won't blend well with Bermuda though. The grass blades are noticeably thicker and the color is different. It tolerates mowing at 1 inch just fine.

    Hi Ron. My husband is planning on beginning his top dressing project this week. One question that he wants to ask is that is fertilized with Milogranite the first Saturday in June. Is it safe to use Milogranite again even if it has been about 6 weeks from the last time he laid that down? Or.what other options would you recommend? Thank you.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  2 года назад +1

      Yes he can use Milorganite again. A fertilizer that releases faster is better for top dressing though. This is a good option: golfcourselawn.store/products/24-0-6-flagship-3-iron-bio-nite-granular-lawn-fertilizer

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      Nims ter whenever the lawn is actively growing you're good to top dress. For warm season lawns, late spring until early August is fine. Really you want 3 - 4 weeks of growing following the top dressing for the lawn to recover well. In late spring is ideal because it gives you the most time for recovery and the weather is also a bit cooler. I would cut the lawn anywhere between .5" - 1" for warm season grasses. You don't want to scalp it too low because then there's really no grass to hold he same in place should there be heavy rainfall. Mowing a touch higher is especially a good idea when top dressing a slope. 😎👍

      Heya Nalaonagar. Are you looking for powered reel mowers or push reel mowers? For powered, the Tru Cut is a great option. You can pick them up pre-owned for between 650 - 1000 in good shape. Depends on which type of Bermuda looks best to you Coleman. If I were starting a lawn from scratch with seed, my seed of choice would be Arden 15. Irrigation should help glavotsky. Have you tried any of the carbon soil amendments to improve the overall health of the soil? That should help produce stronger roots which will reduce stress in the turf as temps rise.

    Question: It is forecast to rain everyday for the next 10 days, is this a good time to seed Bermuda? I’m in Florida so temperature is not an issue, just don’t want to drown the seeds.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      More than than flooding the seeds, I'd be more concerned about them being washed away if your turf isn't level. If your lawn is relatively flat with good drainage, you should be fine. I think you guys are about to get rain from Cristobal right? If you can perhaps put a light layer of topsoil on top of the seeds to further give them something to hold on to, that might be helpful. It's hard to pass up on 10 days of free rain. 😎👍

    • @logueg
      @logueg 4 года назад +1

      Ron Henry Yes, rain from Cristobal. I did plan to top the seed with a sand lawn soil mix so they’re not exposed. So I’ll prep the soil and lay the seed and top it then cross my fingers. Like you said, free water - and a lot of it - is hard to pass up. Thanks for your input!
