I just discovered this video and can confirm, it works. I used regular coax, about 15ft worth. My mod to this will be to add a 10db tv signal amplifier, powered by a 9v rechargeable battery, into a BNC antenna in hopes of being able to separate my phone a bit from the end of the cable. This is a great hack sir, thank you for posting it.
I just did this using someone elses 'how to'. I used 'Wire wrap' wire, wrapped around the gopro housing like 10-15 times, and attach both end of the wire wrap wire to the RG174. I hot glued everything I could on the GoPro housing. I also tried wrapping the wire wrap wire around my ipad, but it didn't work, but it did work with just a bit stripped like in this video, and taped to the ipad or iphone. I'm using 40 feet of RG174, and was getting signal below 2 feet of ice down to 14 feet of water. I mounted the GoPro to a tin can, and filled the can with stones, and attached rope to the can. I just let the can sink and turn it by twisting the rope if needed . I suspect the writer of the 'how to' I read, watched this video before trying to improve on it. Thanks for sharing. I should add that my signal wasn't the greatest, and had to play around with it a bit to get signal. Also, connect the GoPro to your phone or device, before putting it underwater, as it wont connect once its down there. Also I wonder if using another length of RG174 might improve signal strength?
Awesome video! What if you put a little fractal antenna on the GoPro side of the wire and attached that flat to the back plate of the device, do you think it would show any improvement? Interested in doing something like this without building a custom housing, but looking for ~30m depth.
Tested it yesterday with my GoPro Hero4 Black. I Attached the cable to the front of the house under the lens (with Sugru) and it worked like a charm at 20m depth with my iPhone 6 - even if the cable was 10-15 cm from the phone!
Just wanted to update those less than electrical savvy people as I am lol. This method does work! I just bought and tried it on the session 5. The first trial it didn't work for me at about 18 ft of cord using a rg6 coax cable because nowhere in town had the rg174. It could have been many factors in which it didn't work but what I did was cut both of my coax ends larger than the 2 1/2' they recommend (I left about 5 "), I cut my coax down to 10 feet, and It worked great. I'm excited to get out ice fishing and try this out!
I followed your advice and can report that it works (somewhat erratically) in salt water to 10 meters depth. It was essential to reduce the GoPro Hero 3+ resolution from its highest quality video settings in order for live Preview to work while recording video. This GoPro does not allow Live Preview over WiFi when doing time lapse. The system is somewhat finicky to keep working, possibly due to the cable flooding at depth, or to the placement of the ends of the cable relative to the WiFi antennae on camera (and iPad). The 6 cm length of the antenna is a half wavelength at 2.4 GHz I presume? In salt water the speed of light is less than in air, so you might get a small gain if the wet end antenna was shortened (to 4.6 cm I think).
Thanks for this Jan. Me and a colleague tried this hack to view a live stream underwater. 8 meters underwater, with a cable 30 meters long. Tested it with a GoPro Hero 3 and 4 with no problems and no lags. We used an RG6 cable with about 5cm of the core bared for the GoPro and 10cm for a Asus 7 inch tab. Just wanted to share that this works, you are limited only by the battery life of the GoPro.
@@luishnk3983 300 meters is stretching it. That would be over 30dB loss on the 800MHz frequency alone. In terms of rg59 the loss is about 15% more than rg6 as it is a lower core thickness. If you can share a bit more detail of the setup you are trying to achieve i might be able to suggest more. The GoPro itself supports only a depth of about 40meters.
So this coaxial cable is just near the gopro under water on its housing? Not plugged into the gopro in any way correct? The signal travels up the cable to your phone where it is taped to your phone? Do I have this correct? Thanks.

Wow! This is really cool and exactly what I was looking for!! I'm working with a group that is trying to build a gopro setup for doing deep water ecology work in the Gulf of Maine (up to 500ft). We have an underwater case that will go to that depth. But we'd really like to be able to stream the video to the surface. When you say that 20m is pretty close to the limits of your design, do you mean you only have 20m of cable? Or do you mean that the signal starts to break up. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can share!
yes, i meant that the signal will be too weak with longer cable. Im sure you can get few meters more with better cable then i used but just few more meters.
if you need 500 ft and you use special housing for gopro, i sugest you to use HDMI cable with some extending solution. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI look here for extenders.

Brilliant video - I was able to get this to work using an Olympus Tough TG4 camera and an LGG4 phone. Got the coax from Maplin in Southampton UK. Off to try on rock pools next!
Just discovered this thread. I’m trying to connect my GoPro7 to the iPhone via the GoPro app. I got the GoPro mounted on the front bumper of the truck. Attempting to get a bumpers eye view of the trail. Trying Belden 1695a, it’s a 3GHz video wire. Not sure why the wire matters, the ground is not being used.
I've bought coaxial TV cable from ASDA (10m for £8) I used it with Go Pro 7 White and iPhone X. REMEMBER TO CHANGE CONNECTION from 5Ghz to 2.4Ghz on your newer GO PRO I connected cable on the top of Go Pro and to the back of the iPhone X case. Works like a charm!
Dash Riprock Well RG6 (RJ6) seems to be cable for lower frequency but if you dont need long cable then it might work. Anyway you dont need to use same cable as i did. Every coaxial cable for frequency close to 2,4 Ghz should be ok. And yes, it was just simple waterproof clue under heatshrink to make end of cable waterproof.
it actually doesnt need to be taped at all but its just good idea to fix it as close as possible to the devices WiFi antenna. But its really good idea to make antenna cable waterproof with some glue.
its not a must if you have short cable but if you have longer cable, then signal will be weaker and it must be as close as possible to mobile device built in wifi antenna.
Jan Siimson Jan, I made a telescopic boom for my GoPro using a 13' fiberglass cane pole. I just cut the cane pole at the right diameter, then glued the right size screw into it. The GoPro easily mounts to it using the standard GoPro tripod mount! It's about 10' long and super sturdy. What do you use for your boom pole?
1 hour later: it works. GoPro in the bathtub and other end of cable moved around to see where best on my Mac. Just beautiful. Now, have to test down to 100ft/30m. Pure thinking out of the box! Thanks.
❗I NEED SOME HELP HERE!: I bought 5 meters of Rg174, 50 Ohm (it also says 072M on it) coaxial cable. I removed 6cm of shielding and rubber tube from both ends, burned the end to seal it and did the same with the shrink tube. I have a YI 4K+ camera capable of 2.4ghz or 5Ghz (set up to 2.4ghz) Wifi transmission and a Oneplus 3t phone. Once i lower it through the ice hole, just a little bit it loses signal. I don't think the coaxial cable is transmitting the signal or it might be placed in the wrong place. Thanks for any help!

Hi. Wifi still wifi, so it doesnt travel truogh water what ever device or model you use. So even on 2019 you must use something similar. Anyway there probably is available some ready to use solutions for now.
Thanks this works very well. My cable had a plastic housing on the other side of the shielding. I kept the plastic housing on because it is more water proof and superglued the end. I am only working in 6 feet of water but it works great.
Jan; I tried this hack (brilliant, btw) but could not get this to work using an sjcam5000 and an iPad 2. What I wondered is; does this setup demand specific framerates and resolution? Or, does it depend on how well the iPad 2 can receive the wifi stream? I'd really like to get this working so I can use it with my pond as I need to 'find' various critters come winter time to overwinter inside. And just to be sure, when I strip each end of the coax, the inner wire remains sheathed, correct? At least, I think that's how I'm interpreting your video. Any help would be appreciated. I placed the one end by the buttons on the outside of the waterproof housing and the land-portion of the coax, I roamed the back of my iPad 2, looking for the best reception but didn't get anything. My coax is about 5m in length.
Hi. Framerates and resolutions does not affect anything. Only thing that is important, is wifi signal strenght. Inner cable metal core must remain as it is. Only thing that must be removed is outer metal shielding. Should work with any devices that normally can be connected trough wifi on land. 5 meters of coax should work. You may get problems when cable lenght goes over 15-20 meters because wifi signal gets rapidly weaker in longer cables.
Okay, I'll give it another go. Seems then that my ipad isn't getting the signal when the cam is underwater, still. Thanks for letting me know framerate and resolution aren't factors.
im trying to understand what you did. Im not an electronic kind of guy. so did you basically extedended the signal buy putting an antenna close to the unit to connect the gopro then the wire itself was enough to use the signal to connect to the gopro? im trying to to see if i can do the live feed from the gopro for 60+ feet.
+bugaljuice Yes, you understand it correct. But with longer cables signal will get very weak and you cant connect it anymore. So its quite limited in lenght.
Ok, I tested it now. I used 5 meters long cable. I switched my gopro wifi settings for remote and connected camera and remote exactly same way as shown in video with phone. All worked perfect. There was no differense if both units were under water or just 1. Also there was no difference where i fixed cable on remote. It got connection even from 5 cm away from remote. I tested it in few meters deep. But it must also work in 20 meters deep. Only problem that i can see is, if you go too deep then water pressure may block remote controls buttons.

Well, basicly 6 cm is half of gopro wifi signal wavelenght, so its precise measurement. But some people has taken shielding off with no measuring it and got it working also. U must take shielding off roughly 3 or 6 or 12 cm to let wifi signal to go into cable. Theres nothing to do with tape :)
I followed exactly what you did. But my GoPro Hero 10 Black will not show the preview on my phone. I get a message "Preview is not available while recording". I get this automatically when I hit record, I'm not even under the water yet! This is my first GoPro, so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Anyone can help?
I have not used gopro for years anymore but same problem was with some specific camera settings. Try other video resolutions or framerates for example. If you can connect with camera, to swich video on and off then theres no problem with wifi connection but problems with camera/app.
hi Jan, I just went for snorkeling during the weekend. And the remote were unable to connect with cam when I was underwater. this should be working if I link with the gopro wifi remote while both items go underwater? Thanks!
Ok, ist not really WiFi anymore but its still almost only way to control your underwater gopro while youre surface and to see what are you filming. Or its very easy way to do it. :D
Super, vielen Dank für die Anleitung! Hab ein Samsung S9 mit einer Akaso Brave 4 über die "CamKing" App nach dieser Anleitung gekoppelt. Hab einen knapp 2mtr tiefen Koiteich + Wasserschildkröte, wollte die Unterwasserwelt ohne Wahnsinnsinvestition filmen, klappt ohne jedes Problem! Als Führungsstab fungiert eine gut 2mtr. lange Zeltstange, das S9 hab ich mit einem Fahrradhalter montiert, die Cam hat ja eh das komplette Befestigungszubehör. So verrutscht nichts, jeder Positionswechsel ist bei laufender Aufnahme möglich. Klasse!!!

Hey! 30 m is just too long cable. I have tested with 20m and barely got it working but i had mobile device with very good wifi. I just sugest you to use cable shorter then 20 meter and you get it working.

Lucas Langlois it might be good idea. If you will use it, you dont need to clean gopro side of antenna cable because that cleaned part makes it work as antenna. But i cant tell you will it work with 30 meters cable or not, because 2,4 G signal will die very fast if clabe goes longer. If you will try, let me know how it goes :)

I am looking for an underwater camera with Wi-Fi that I can hang from my drone with about 20 feet of cable so I can fly over the lake in summer and bring my drone down to let the camera into the water to look in different places to see if there is fish

I bought it from local store that deals with TV and internet cables. Basicly you dont need exactly same cable. Just ask for coaxial cable for ferquency between 1,5 and 3 GHz. 2,4 GHz is exact GoPro wifi frequency and that should be the best.
This a an amazing tip,and having tried it with my gopro hero 4 silver on the linear setting it works well,it's probably better to have one person monitoring the tablet while the other person can move the camera around,got some footage of Palmated Newts using this setup.A big thanks for this tip regards Bri.

James O'Brien lol....wifi means a connection between devices to communicate wirelessly. It doesn't mean an internet wifi signal. Gopro has built in wifi and paired with your phone's wifi, you can live view.

Yes, thats correct. Also works with any devices that can be controlled trough wifi.

Yes, there is small time delay about 3 sec. Delay is same like on land with gopro wifi.

Its to make cable waterproof, it just lasts longer then. You can allso cover removed part completely with glued heat shrink.

any copper, or aluminum wire with a coating will work
its just heat shring tube to make cable end waterproof . You dont need it but it makes cable last longer and look nice.

That cable should work well. Just try other positions for cable. Signal strenght also depends at your devices wifi signal power.

Jan; I tried this hack (brilliant, btw) but could not get this to work using an sjcam5000 and an iPad 2. What I wondered is; does this setup demand specific framerates and resolution? Or, does it depend on how well the iPad 2 can receive the wifi stream? I'd really like to get this working so I can use it with my pond as I need to 'find' various critters come winter time to overwinter inside. And just to be sure, when I strip each end of the coax, the inner wire remains sheathed, correct? At least, I think that's how I'm interpreting your video. Any help would be appreciated. I placed the one end by the buttons on the outside of the waterproof housing and the land-portion of the coax, I roamed the back of my iPad 2, looking for the best reception but didn't get anything. My coax is about 5m in length.
Hi. Framerates and resolutions does not affect anything. Only thing that is important, is wifi signal strenght. Inner cable metal core must remain as it is. Only thing that must be removed is outer metal shielding. Should work with any devices that normally can be connected trough wifi on land. 5 meters of coax should work. You may get problems when cable lenght goes over 15-20 meters because wifi signal gets rapidly weaker in longer cables.
Okay, I'll give it another go. Seems then that my ipad isn't getting the signal when the cam is underwater, still. Thanks for letting me know framerate and resolution aren't factors.
im trying to understand what you did. Im not an electronic kind of guy. so did you basically extedended the signal buy putting an antenna close to the unit to connect the gopro then the wire itself was enough to use the signal to connect to the gopro?
im trying to to see if i can do the live feed from the gopro for 60+ feet.

Yes, you understand it correct. But with longer cables signal will get very weak and you cant connect it anymore.
So its quite limited in lenght.

Ok, I tested it now. I used 5 meters long cable. I switched my gopro wifi settings for remote and connected camera and remote exactly same way as shown in video with phone. All worked perfect. There was no differense if both units were under water or just 1. Also there was no difference where i fixed cable on remote. It got connection even from 5 cm away from remote. I tested it in few meters deep. But it must also work in 20 meters deep. Only problem that i can see is, if you go too deep then water pressure may block remote controls buttons.

My only concern is cable length for such a small thin cable that it comes with. I only want to go to about 30ft max
Can i use a regular coax cable instead of your recommended cable of RG174?
It should work as many people have used different coax cables but i cant give any qurantee :)

heat shrink does not affect signal. only shielding does.

Well, basicly 6 cm is half of gopro wifi signal wavelenght, so its precise measurement. But some people has taken shielding off with no measuring it and got it working also. U must take shielding off roughly 3 or 6 or 12 cm to let wifi signal to go into cable. Theres nothing to do with tape :)

I followed exactly what you did. But my GoPro Hero 10 Black will not show the preview on my phone. I get a message "Preview is not available while recording". I get this automatically when I hit record, I'm not even under the water yet! This is my first GoPro, so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Anyone can help?
I have not used gopro for years anymore but same problem was with some specific camera settings. Try other video resolutions or framerates for example. If you can connect with camera, to swich video on and off then theres no problem with wifi connection but problems with camera/app.

hi Jan, I just went for snorkeling during the weekend. And the remote were unable to connect with cam when I was underwater.
this should be working if I link with the gopro wifi remote while both items go underwater?

What's the point in having WiFi if you have to "connect" your camera to a controller using a wire?
Ok, ist not really WiFi anymore but its still almost only way to control your underwater gopro while youre surface and to see what are you filming. Or its very easy way to do it. :D
Because without the wifi jumping the waterproof housing, you wouldn't have a waterproof solution to protect your camera. Fishermen understand.
You must not realize that normally the WiFi doesn't work underwater. That's the purpose of this guide.

Super, vielen Dank für die Anleitung! Hab ein Samsung S9 mit einer Akaso Brave 4 über die "CamKing" App nach dieser Anleitung gekoppelt. Hab einen knapp 2mtr tiefen Koiteich + Wasserschildkröte, wollte die Unterwasserwelt ohne Wahnsinnsinvestition filmen, klappt ohne jedes Problem! Als Führungsstab fungiert eine gut 2mtr. lange Zeltstange, das S9 hab ich mit einem Fahrradhalter montiert, die Cam hat ja eh das komplette Befestigungszubehör. So verrutscht nichts, jeder Positionswechsel ist bei laufender Aufnahme möglich. Klasse!!!
Hey Jan, just tried it and can't get it to work. I got a Alpha Wire 30 m Black PVC Coaxial Cable RG174/U 2.5908 mm, and followed the instruction on the video and still nothing. Tried it connected with the iPhone 6. Any thoughts or advice ?

30 m is just too long cable. I have tested with 20m and barely got it working but i had mobile device with very good wifi. I just sugest you to use cable shorter then 20 meter and you get it working.

Lucas Langlois it might be good idea. If you will use it, you dont need to clean gopro side of antenna cable because that cleaned part makes it work as antenna. But i cant tell you will it work with 30 meters cable or not, because 2,4 G signal will die very fast if clabe goes longer. If you will try, let me know how it goes :)

It didn't work here :( I don't know if I used the wrong cable or maybe a too long cable, but as soon as the camera went 1cm under water the image freezed. Any suggestions?

If you use same cable then up to 10 meters it should work perfect. I have tested also 20 meters and got it working but it was a bit tricky.

If speaker wire has a shielding (some form of metal coating around middle core) you can try.... never tested myself

I bought it from local store that deals with TV and internet cables.
Basicly you dont need exactly same cable. Just ask for coaxial cable for ferquency between 1,5 and 3 GHz. 2,4 GHz is exact GoPro wifi frequency and that should be the best.

Search pictures from google "where is iphone6 wifi antenna" and just fix it as close as possible to it.
I wondered the same thing. It seems the antenna is located on the lower left of the phone - just beside the home button.

This a an amazing tip,and having tried it with my gopro hero 4 silver on the linear setting it works well,it's probably better to have one person monitoring the tablet while the other person can move the camera around,got some footage of Palmated Newts using this setup.A big thanks for this tip regards Bri.

How do get wifi out on the lake though?
James O'Brien lol....wifi means a connection between devices to communicate wirelessly. It doesn't mean an internet wifi signal. Gopro has built in wifi and paired with your phone's wifi, you can live view.
