- Medicine/Biochemistry lesson on iron absorption, transport in the blood, metabolism and regulation of iron uptake in the body.
NOTE: There is a mistake in this video: ferritin binds to Fe3+ and not to Fe2+. Sorry for the confusion :)
Hey guys! In this video, I teach how iron is absorbed in the intestinal system, transported in the blood, metabolized and ultimately how iron uptake is down regulated to ensure excessive amounts of iron are not absorbed.

Ferrous iron is converted into ferric iron by haephaestin or ceruloplasmin, to bind to transferrin.
Transferrin can only carry ferric iron (Fe3+).
I was just about to say that!! Other than that, this video is great!
This is GOLD!! I'm super grateful that you take the time to make this video. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH
I'm studying Iron overload diseases and this really simplified the ferroportin/hepcidin pathway for me. Very much appreciated!
Hi everyone! My apologies for the error with regards to Transferrin binding. I will be re-uploading this video with the corrections ASAP. Thanks :)
What does it mean when you have low soluble transferrin receptor?
you never did :(
Just made 3 days of class make sense in less than 10 minutes. Thank you.
I love your Chanel. It makes everything in STEN easier to understand. ❤❤❤❤
You really made it so easy to understand thank you!
What a blessing! Thank you so much it makes so much sense
JJ you are Leading.....
Keep it up.
Great...... performance.
You helped me a lot!! My lecturer don't teach about this but exam come out with this.. I very speechless to that lecturer bruhhhh
Good explanation...
It is very easy to understand.
Thanks for this. Subscribed. More vids to review from. ❤️
JIZAKALLAH ♥️ it helped me alot ♥️
This is so helpful, thank you :)
Transferrin comes from the liver.
Thanks
thank you so much for this lesson😭😭🙏🏻🙏🏻
thank you very much for your work
Thank you so much for this video
@03:45 i know that this question might be out of the scope of this video, but regarding the liver and the hepcidin mechanism, are there conditions like diabetes, PCOS, fatty liver or hyperinsulinemia that could affect it?
Do bones release transferrin? I've never read it in any of my biochemistry books im confused
Do you have anything to explain hemochromatosis?
Good video, just wondering in the enterocytes, wouldn't Fe2+ be re-oxidised by the plasma ferroxidase ceruloplasmin to form Fe3+ in the bloodstream?
Yes buddy, transferrrin can't bind with Fe II so it is converted to Fe III
cheers for this
Do bones produce transferrin?
Thanks for your effort. I want to ask you what is the recommended daily iron dose for an anemic pregnant woman?
40mg
Thank you!❤️
It's verrrryyyyyyy helpffffffful 😭👏🏻🌺🌺
Can you explain why iron can drop during pregnancy? Thanks 🙏🏼
The best video
Excellent
Great explanation thank you so much
what about integrin moboliferrine pathaway
Thanks a ton
Thank u so much
Great video. I just noticed a few things: transferrin binds Fe3+ not Fe2+. Also, where are you getting that information about the recommended iron per day? I thought it was way less (i.e. males 1-2 mg per day and females 2-3mg per day)
Hi aniyeats! Thanks for the comment! The information on recommended dietary allowance comes from the national institutes of health (NIH). I believe what you are thinking is that, typically males will lose approximately 1-2mg of iron per day whereas females lose nearly twice that amount (2-3mg per day). You might be thinking that, if we are losing that amount per day, isn't that all we need to ingest per day? However, typically we only absorb a portion of what we ingest (approximately 10-20%), so we need to ingest about 10-20mg of iron per day in our diet. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions :)
Nope the values are correct. It might be worth mentioning though that on a iron adequate diet (from the perspective of the pregnant mother) the child is born with a 4-6 months supply of iron, so imo you should be more concerned about avoiding getting too much iron. There is a bit of iron in breastmilk aswell. In these early months the child will not need the 0.27 mg of iron in supplements.
Yeah transferrin binds to fe 3+
Is the RDA for males is really 8g?
Isn't the number applies on the (Recommended daily intake)?
Really helpful video. However ive studied in some books that transferrin is actually produced by the liver mostky not the bone.
Please tell if its correct or maybe you made a mistake.
Regards
Thanks alot
Thanks ! Sir
Perfect👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks
So if I’m anemic, have significant calcium loss, and also a fatty liver, what do I do and how?! My doctor gave me ferrous sulfate and that’s it. I don’t feel better still.
thanks
i looooooooooove your videos
What can be done to assist people with excess iron/ferritin , who does not excrete the iron.
How can the process be healed or assisted?
If you're talking about haemochromatosis then there is blood donation....?
Nice
Precious
Wow blessings ma
isnt ferroportin transporter only takes fe3plus, it has to be reoxodized to fe2plus
iron binds transferrin and ferritin in fe3 form.kindly correct!
Hi everyone. I was wondering what part of the small intestine exactly is iron absorbed.
Duodenum
Fe3+ - duodenal cyto c = Fe2+, Fe2+ + divalent metal transport 1 = Fe2+ transport to cell ,
Fe2+ bound to ferritin
So fe2+ transport into blood vuva ferroportin 1
Transferrin doesn’t bind to Fe2+ but it binds to Fe3+
Update please
Since last one year my wife is suffering from iron deficiency, she is intolerant to iron supplements too.....Any suggestions ??????
Advise your wife to see a doctor. There are a number of ways to tackle iron deficiency anaemia, supplementation is usually adequate. However people (like your wife perhaps) often get GIT side effects from some supplements like ferrous sulphate. There are alternatives in such cases (lower dose, switch to ferrous gluconate etc), but again, your wife should speak to a doctor to figure out what alternatives will be right for her case.
eat liver
Increase vitamin C consumption
This can be example of those foods...
vITAMIN A
Found in cheese, liver, sweet potato, carrots
vITAMIN B2 (RIbOFLAVIN)
Found in dairy products, meat,
green leafy vegetables
vITAMIN C
Found in citrus fruits, potatoes, strawberries
COPPER
Found in shellfi sh, nuts and cocoa
From here... suplements are the best ... thanks
also check for PCOS and hyperinsulinaemia
You didn't mention about hephaestin
Which app u used to make this vedio?
So what should I eat so I can absorb more zinc
vitamin c i think

You was wrong, the transferrin basically produced by the liver
And you are wrong to say "you was wrong"😂😂
@@ehllarpearl Yes, but not as wrong as The Creator was when he created you sir.
