    the way they have this actress singing was a really good directing move. seeing as how the real June Havoc was around age 2 when they first did the act

    FABULOUS! I wrote a book on Gypsy Rose Lee's mother and have seen hundreds of Junes but this child nails it!

      In an interview, all June Havoc (the real Baby June) had to say about "Gypsy" was: "I was a solo act. There was never anyone on stage with me."

      *crowe bobby* Of course she would. The woman was full of herself. And a bit of a sourpuss. She always saw herself as so tragic. Give me Gypsy any day, who always saw the humor in everything, including herself.

      I know, but it was such a show-biz answer. I read an article once about the 16-y-o son of a French circus family. He did a copy of a famous Russian performer who "brings the audience to tears" with the equilibrist act he does on a bare table. The reporter mentioned that the boy wore lipstick, which had all the girls wondering if he was gay. At that point the mother chimed in with all the things that were wrong with the boy's act: that he wore too much make-up; that the act wasn't original to begin with and he need some new material; that he also needed new costume and had been using the same music for the past 4 years, and on and on until the boy just quietly said: "But, mother, I get more applause than you do." (Mike drop!)

    It was the Broadway production of, I'd say, 8 or 10 years ago. I'd have to do some research to tell you exactly.

    @cecilegreard Baby June IS supposed to sound this way--she's supposed to be faintly appalling, so you're convinced the only reason Rose is pushing the girls forward this early in their careers is because of Rose's own ambition. When June grows up to be Dainty June and sings "Broadway, Broadway," you're supposed to think she's got some genuine talent (which is why Mr. Grantzinger eventually wants to sign her)--but at this point she's mostly supposed to be a saccharine horror.

    While the talented ANN JILLIAN played "Dainty June" in the original film "GYPSY", I found this "Baby June" very talented. All the best! Be so nice if you could post a clip of Ann Jillian "Dainty June" from the film - I'm sure it would help young talents who will go on to do the role on stage. Thank you so much.

      The original "Broadway" Baby June (Jacqueline Mayro) did a number that was so spectacular it literally stopped the show and had to taken out before it opened on Broadway. It was a ballet toe number with a life-size doll.

    @JollyMe08 ,
    Actually, Ethel Merman never did a film version of Gypsy. She played Rose in the orginal stage version in 1959. If you're thinking of the 1962 film, it was Rosalind Russell who played Rose in that, and for what it's worth I prefer the TV version with Bette Midler, but the 1962 film is definitely worth seeing.

    What's her name? Baby June's real name. The actresses name. And when was this recorded?

  • @manga12
    @manga12 14 лет назад

    her voice is too nasal and sounds forced to be higher then it is.

    • @MrCrowebobby
      @MrCrowebobby 6 лет назад

      Exactly! Because she was still doing the act the way her mother created it when she really was practically a baby and she was now much too old for it. Noël Coward once wrote after seeing one of these theatrical child monsters: "The entire second act and that child's throat should be cut."
