    I love how Leigh Ann makes you believe that she is June and that June is tired of singing those songs and trying to pleasing Mamma Rose. LOVED IT!

    6:56-- WHY NOT, DAINTY JUNE?!!"
    Absolutely hilarious...and the look on Leigh Ann Larkin's face (as if to say, "really?"), as well as that entire closing speech is hysterical. The first time I ever saw a truly droll portrayal of June-as-adolescent-knowing this-act is terrible. Just great.

    Leigh Ann Larkin totally deserved a Tony nomination for this ... a totally wonderful and different take on the character ... I loved it!

    One of the best "Dainty Junes" by far! She made this character all her own for sure! :)

    When June Havoc (the real Baby June) was interviewed, all she had to say about "Gypsy" was: "I was a solo act. There was never anyone on stage with me."

      She was a headliner and a big child star and never did kiddie competition shows. There are a number of photos of her with the younger boys, billed as Baby June and her Newsboy Songsters, and also photos of her in numbers with the grown up boys. She did appear with Rose's boys for sure, but she never appeared in amateur kiddie shows and that being in the musical was a big hurt for her.

    I suppose the dancer's top hat came off intentionally so that Rose could run on and give it back to him... Otherwise, MAJOR props to Patti for taking her impromptu cue on that one!!!

    • @kevincoxhead7137
      @kevincoxhead7137 11 месяцев назад

      yes, that is part of the original Jerome Robbins choreography. The two boys dropping their canes is not in the original choreography and I hate it. It spoils the hat drop and pushes the point too hard.

    Did Patti improv that part with putting the hat on the dancers head?
    If so that was really good.
    She's a genius.

    • @mikeyjamieson4715

      In every production during this number, Rose always comes onstage to fix the set, or the boys if they drop something, and she usually copies the choreography when doing so.

    • @kevincoxhead7137
      @kevincoxhead7137 Год назад +3

      it's on the original Jerome Robbins choreography. The one boy who deliberately dropped his cane at the same time, was not in the original chorie... not was another cane drop, but having been added for this production. The one hat drop was enough. The other two were overkill on the idea.

    A friend of mine once said amateurs should never do "Gypsy" if only because of this number: most non-professional orchestras co not have the skill to play the tricky and beautiful dance break music to save their lives, and if you don't have an absolutely first-rate Dainty June--who can convince you she's enormously gifted despite the awfulness of the act--then not much is really at stake in her mother's later decision.
    What I love about this is that not only is Leigh Ann Larkin a genuine musical star, but she's hilarious.( the funniest dainty June ever)

    • @kevincoxhead7137
      @kevincoxhead7137 11 месяцев назад

      Correct. and too many amateur companies try and do the Robbins choreography. with not that great results. I was in the original Australian production which was a reproduction of the Lansbury production, and this was one of my dream numbers. It pushes Rose's choreographic abilities and the style of the day so perfectly. I always loved doing the Robbins choreography, reproduced and adapted here by the legendary Betty Pounder. My disappointment in this version is that the boys don't have that quick change which also adds to the fun and theatricality of the number. I also feel the dropping of canes TWICE is pushing things too far. Tulsa loosing his hat is enough. Dropping two canes just spoils that touch.

    Leigh Ann Larkin was disconcerting as Dainty June. Her voice makes her sound as old as Rose. I wanted her to pitch her voice higher to sound more age appropriate for the role. The timbre of her voice is too low and dark for Dainty June. The timbre is darker than Patti's!!!

    • @ZoraCatone
      @ZoraCatone 5 лет назад +11

      That's the whole point. The routine is old and tired and they're too old to be doing it.

    • @kevincoxhead7137
      @kevincoxhead7137 3 года назад

      @@ZoraCatone No, it's a new act. The one Rose dreams about in the hotel room scene, a few scenes before it.
