And to think that she did this in her forties. This being the revival, she and the other producers couldn't find a dancer they liked for Roxie so they asked her to reprise the role. In her forties and she nailed it. She danced into her 50's too, but not often then. I wish I had had that staying power but I ran out of money for dance lessons and then college showed up and that was the end of that. Gwen Verdon originated the role of Roxie Hart when she was older, too, before she retired and Ann took over the role in the 70's. They really were the queens of Fosse choreography and dance legends in their own rights.
Rest in peace, to the beautiful Ann Reinking. You and Gwen Verdon both set the foundation for many Roxies to come. Thank you for bringing such psychopathic tendencies to the stage, and so well.
I saw that this clip was almost 10 minutes long and I almost skipped to the song, but I'm glad I didn't! Reinking was truly like nobody else. This is electric.
This feels like the best version out of all of them, not bc she basically started the routine but she puts a strong element of an improv feeling, like Roxie the character is just literally thinking everything she's saying up on the spot instead of having it all planned out ahead.
Was on the front row of this production...though not at all like the original, it was good. Anne spat on my face while singing the ROXIE number...did not wash my face for a week.
That beats my friend suffering a “Natalie Merchant ... 10,000 Maniacs” injury. We were in the front row if a concert in college ... and standing at the very edge I’d the stage. I look over and my friend is frantically trying to extract her hand from underneath Natalie Merchant’s shoe. Hilarious. We both agree we’d rather have Ann spit on us during a song. We love Ann and are heartbroken by the loss.
Really? I adore Ann Reinking, but as Grace in the Motion Picture version of Annie. Not sure I admire her so much in her performance as Roxie Hart. I really do prefer Renee Zellweger's interpretation, although A.R. is beloved in the U.S. as a star of the stage and screen
I think that many would argue she is "one of the best dancers" but she is no Gwen Verdon or Chita Rivera. I adored her. Saw her in Pippin, Chicago [and when she took over for Verdon], A Chorus Line, Dancin and the Chicago revival. She should have won the Best Actress Tony.
I miss Anne so much! I've gotten to take master classes from her and go to Q&As the past two summers and she's such an amazing performer and lady! Soooo cute here!!!
saw her as Roxie with Lenora Nemitz as Velma and Jerry Orbach as Billy in '77 at the Muny in St. Louis. From the moment she ran onto that huge stage with her lover Fred Casley, from where I sat-a mile away-those big eyes still mezmermized this young boy. And her dancing was incredible: during Me and My Baby number, sliding back bends-wow, I was in love.
Annie was a phenomenal actress, which was often overlooked. Michael Bennett once said she was the only one that got the essence of the Cassie / Zach exchange right during One in a Chorus LIne. Watch it sometime. It was amazing to see it from backstage during the Gala
She is wonderful... The "I'm a star...." part, when she delivered the dialogue so fast, reminded me of how she argued with Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett) in a scene from Annie, when Miss Hannigan doesn't want ANnie to be going with her. lol
Just went and saw Sharon and Carolyn in the Sydney production tonight! Wow - just wow - JUST as good as the New York production I saw quite a few years ago!
UGGHHHH SHE IS DISTGUSTINGLY AMAZINGGGGG; HER DANCING IS PERFECTION AND I HAVENT SEEN ANYONE WHO CAN CONJOUR THE FOSSE DANCE TECHNIQUE LIKE ANN; HATE HER:-)
As a kid I never understood why both major American productions of Chicago cast women in their 50s whose voices are on the decline to play a hot young murderess... But this right here is why. Chicago is not a show for singers. It is a show for DANCERS AND COMEDIANS. She could have spoken the entire song (and she sure did speak some of it here), and nobody would have batted an eye. So much fun to watch.
Talk professional.... she was off beat at 5:31 Didn't phase her. She just paused till the next beat and dove tailed in. That is the mark of a true professional
I saw this rendition on Broadway - one of the most brilliant shows I've ever seen. Dispensed with multiple sets, pricey, unnecessary, that cover up problems. This was stark, depended entirely on the actors, songs and plots.
I saw Gwen Verdon in the original touring company of Chicago in San Francisco. With all due respect to everyone who followed, Ms. Verdon will always be the best Roxie and Chita Rivera the best Velma Kelly. Jerry Outback, the same. The original full set blows the new minimalist staging out of the water - with the neon lights and the vaudeville staging. To me, the new production looks dark and drab. Still, better this Chicago than none at all.
Jerry O R B A C H had a certain flair about him. The current production refined and improved much about the revival. That is why the revival has survived on Broadway for almost 23 years...a record only bested by Phantom. The current choreography is much improved as well, in my opinion. I've seen this revival 23 times (on Broadway and on tour).
I saw Emma Barton in the recent UK tour, she was Roxy and is 28, Twinnie Lee Moore was Velma and is 22. They are part of a professional cast and thought neither are well known they are ones to watch for sure. Emma was briefly in the BBC soap "Eastenders" as Honey Mitchell.
Zellweger.. I didn't know that Ann Reinking played as Roxie! Whew! She was just so great in the Moive rendintion of ANnie, I guess she would be doing just great too in this onE!
@LaMisereHQ Sorry I missed your reference to "revival cast". I saw the original. Reinking was great in both productions but aged like a fine wine. In the original, she was more of a Gwen Verdon copy. WIth this revival, she was a star!

Rest in Peace our queen. She will be missed.

an absolute master of her craft. she was born for this
RIP, sweet, talented, incredible Ann.

Every step is perfection.
R.I.P. Ann Reinking 💔
I love how smooth and elegant, and still precise all of her movements are! Just amazing!
Agreed completely!
Sleep well, Ms. Reinking. Your talent will live forever.
Was on the front row of this production...though not at all like the original, it was good. Anne spat on my face while singing the ROXIE number...did not wash my face for a week.
are ya serious? :-))))
Was 2-3 row too back in 1997! Just amazing memories. Actually that show made start singing!

Anne is always good, my favorite is her dancing in All That Jazz ~ perfection!
Good god. What a blessing we had. RIP to a legend ❤️💔
Absolutely brilliant ! Undoubtedly the best dancer ever and I've been infatuated since I first saw her in "All That Jazz".
Me too she’s amazing
My first intro to her was when she was in Annie. I absolutely adored her and wanted to grow up to be her. She was an amazing performer.

She was always my favorite dancer. She’s just outstanding.

Absolutely the best Roxie I've ever seen. So graceful and expressive!
Everyone should watch this. A LEGEND.

She sounds so much better here than in the recording.
the recording is fantastic imo
My first broadway experience was her in this revival. I was blown away and nothing has touched it since

Rip you fabulous showstopper, you.

Ann Reinking could sing and dance a phone book she is missed
와 이게 오리지날이구나...
Talk professional.... she was off beat at 5:31 Didn't phase her. She just paused till the next beat and dove tailed in. That is the mark of a true professional
Agreed. The mark of a great performer is often in how they handle the unexpected. She does it so smoothly I bet most don't even notice it.
Absolutely beautiful and brilliant!
@@VeracityLH never saw any one with this talent and expertise
legend!
허...12년전..미친...
She was the best!!!
Other Roxies are about Broadway. Reinking is about truth.
I saw this rendition on Broadway - one of the most brilliant shows I've ever seen. Dispensed with multiple sets, pricey, unnecessary, that cover up problems.

Best Roxie ever
Not dating myself or anything, but i saw her in A Chorus Line back in the 70's.
When people describe someone as "a true original"? This is what they mean.
Say… This broad’s really got something! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 Gonna see her name in lights!!
She is a genius
Ann Reinking is the greatest. No one can play Roxie Hart like her.
R.I.P. Ann Reinking!!
ICON
Uau!❤
Bravo.
I saw Gwen Verdon in the original touring company of Chicago in San Francisco.

AR is her & nothing else; the art of not being anybody else. that is the practice. in Aloha, Revzo
Zellweger.. I didn't know that Ann Reinking played as Roxie! Whew! She was just so great in the Moive rendintion of ANnie, I guess she would be doing just great too in this onE!
@itarecormon In the script, Roxie is described as "20-30"
The greatest! No Roxie as she!
the greatest!
She's amazing Fosse dancer stemming from Pippin.
