Out of all the arrangements of this section that I've heard, this one is my favorite. The way she keeps stopping before she finishes the song (until the last time) is genius because it follows Rose's advice and makes the song itself into a tease 🤩
Am I the only one who sees her portrayal as progressively getting better? Like yeah, in the beginning she’s awkward and naive looking, but in the second performance she appears to be a little more graceful, and by the end her movements look very fluid and seductive. At least that’s what it looks like to me....
That’s exactly what they are going for and it doesnt work. The snap moment from her first strip to one months later is much more powerful. The musical is constructed so that she is a total disaster the first time she steps out to ‘strip’ but she begins to enjoy herself and by the end of that first try, there’s a smile on her face. Then suddenly we are thrust months ahead, out she comes and she’s a star. The issue with this production is that they tried to make her journey to being a sensation more subtle, you rob the audience of one of the most hugely satisfying theatrical moments in the show - when she steps out on stage for her second ‘strip’ full of confidence and a command of her body saying ‘I’m beginning to like this’ it’s an electric moment in the theatre. This idiot director has decided he can improve an already near perfect piece of musical theatre. They have specifically given her award choreography to emphasise that she still doesn’t have it, all that does it make the actor look stupid. I actually think Lara Pulver could pull it off the way it is written but she was done a misservice with this writing. The Bette Midler TV movie of ‘Gypsy’ is weak but you get a really good sense of how the strip sequence works with that.
What the hell?? I've loved Gypsy since forever. How have I not heard of this version??? this is my favorite. The most favorite thing about Gypsy Rose Lee is her campness and she just turnded that level to a hundred like whAT
Like it or not, this version is the closest to the type of vibe the real Gypsy put out when she was onstage. Her whole “thing” was teasing and knowing camp.
this is honestly my favorite version of the strip tease. it’s so clever and elegant

Out of all version that I've seen so far she's my favourite... Although I haven't seen benanti. But that's beside the point. She starts as an awkward girl, who eventually becomes a confident woman, who owns the stage. Exceptional
Cut Lara some slack, everyone praises Imelda for her interpretation as a domineering Stage Mother but I rarely see positives feedback with Lara. She had to work just as hard as Imelda and yet everyone seems pissed Lara landed GRL. She won an OLIVIER for her performance as possibly the trailblazer of the burlesque industry. Without GRL, perhaps Broadway would be extremely different. Lara brought her own thing to the role and did an amazing job!
Honestly, she's the best Gypsy I've ever seen. She's just the right amount of campy and silly, while also sensual and bold. And she's hot lmao. She was perfect!
Saw this twice in London and I was in the first/second row and Lara ended up coming out on the runway area , i was sitting right below her - lol- practically blushed ;-). She was great! And super nice at stage door. Audience loved her throughout the play/musical.
I caught this rendition on some obscure satellite channed with my mother once. We caught it roughly half way into act 1 and i wish i could find the whole thing online!!!
It’s so sweet that all these little gypsy toddlers are learning the ropes from the great Ethel Merman! Without Ethel, gypsy would never have existed!!! That’s why she will always be the Grondalm diva of the Broadway world forever!!!! All hail Ethel!!
After hearing Sandra Church sing it from the original all these years to Natalie Wood to Laura Benanti, she is the weakest in her glamour performance- but very good in the rest of the play. Imelda plays Rose like a true demon, wow.....very bold and fantastic
Isnt it crazyy????????????? This kind of unhealthy mother daughter relationship in this old play AND in real life, where both the daughters are named gypsy rose??
@@ailinbanega5293 including scary similar details like the daughter not knowing how old she is. it’s so hard to believe it’s a coincidence and yet it is!
Do you guys not get that Gypsy Rose Lee was campy, and witty, and really emphasized the "tease" in striptease. The reason she was so popular was largely because of her intelligent and punny monologuing while she "stripped"
Nikki, you hit it exactly right! And intelligent, flirtatious and "punny" is sexy, man!!! Don't you agree?????? I saw an old TV filming of her in which she took off hardly any clothes, and she was so sexy.
@Diane Berg Watch this performance by Cynthia Gibb and tell me that this song isn't sensual. It is possible to be sensual and campy at the same time, believe it or not.
Joaquin Martinez No. She has no talent in the sense that she can't sing or dance or act like her sister could, but she's actually a very entertaining and sultry burlesque star. This woman simply doesn't look right.
Arlo I see what you're saying about this particular performance but I dont think that comes down to bad casting. I think it has more to do with her just misinterpreting the characters abilities. its a common mistake for actresses to portray Gipsy Rose in the since that she has no burlesque talent because they interpret the character that way. Lara Pulver does DEFINITELY have the capability to be sexy and sensual, she's just not utilizing that talent in this role. for reference on just how alluring she can be i recommend watching her play Irene Idler in the BBC show Sherlock. She absolutely KILLS that role.
I regret I don't agree. Look at that face. It's strong, chiselled, hawkish in profile. You'd cast that actress in many of the greatest roles ever written: as Stella in "Cat" or Martha in "Who's Afraid". Or Regan or Goneril in Lear, or Lady Macbeth. But as Gypsy? No, I don't think so.
Well, i suppose we just have to agree to disagree. I find Lara's striking and sculpted face to be vary sexy and sensual, but I suppose that comes down to personal preference/attraction. I have personally always found women with chiselled and strong features to be sexy. I suppose it's not for everyone though.
Yikes...she has a great voice and is an amazing performer. But this is the weirdest version of Gypsy Rose I've ever seen. She's being campy and goofy, it feels like. Needs more sensuality.
Did you ever see the Real Gypsy Rose Lee? She was campy and an intellectual on stage while never fully stripping...Look around on youtube and you will probably find her.
This is the British actress Laura Pulver as Gypsy? I think I can spot the problem right off -- she's been hamstrung by the American accent. Some actors can perform very well even when having to affect a different accent, but with others (Winona Ryder in Dracula leaps to mind), so much energy and concentration has to go into getting the voice sounds right, there doesn't seem to be much else left for acting the part right. I think that's what's happening here. Pulver's working so hard on the American accent, she's not getting enough sensuality into the part. She should be more subtle, tease more in the striptease with her voice and manner. This is way too "in your face." It's similar to what happens with non-professional singers trying to do musicals. They have to try so hard just to get the notes out, they have no leeway to really act the part.
This is nearly unwatchable......almost High School amateurish.....it is painfully clear that the producer and and the 'star' should have done some 'HOMEWORK'....though she was NOT the best of choices to have played Miss Gypsy Rose Lee...at least Miss Natalie Wood, in doing this number...pretty much matched--Miss Lee's, stage presence, and walk....Miss Lee always kept her hair--UP!! I've seen better 'strip-performers' in Monterey Mexico.....lol
Agreed. The point is, she is the mousey quiet sister everyone thinks is untalented until burlesque finally gives her the moment to shine and she discovers how to use her sexuality and that she in fact pretty good at it. The musical is constructed so that she is a total disaster the first time she steps out to ‘strip’ but she begins to enjoy herself and by the end of that first try, there’s a smile on her face. Sadly the women of today have no clue that it’s the ‘Tease’ that men really enjoy. Showing just enough for their imagination to kick in. Women of today think the more they show the greater it is. Once men have seen it all what’s the point ??? time to move on.
Ms. Pulver really falls flat in her big number. First, her vocals are amazing. Perfection. On the other hand her humor is not amazing. Every spoken portion is mis-timed. None of it even slightly resembles what would have been seen in that time period. Were they filming in an empty theater? NO audience response......maybe because she flubbed the whole number. The snake costume at the end looks like a bad disco dress worn in the 70's. The garden of eden set is underwhelming. Really a dissapointment.
This is what is wrong with the modern broadway adaptions of classics. Lara Pulver is incredible
I love this Rendition of the Song. I think Lara is stunning as Gypsy
ITS IRENE ADLER
OH MY GOD YOU'RE RIGHT I WAS THINKING THAT SHE LOOKED FAMILIAR

Beautiful, very entertaining. I enjoyed watching, so wonderful. Stay safe.
I can see why she won the Tony for her performance in Gypsy.
Natalie Wood owns this part!
