Great idea! I have the same idea but we can use denatured alcohol(ethanol). İt's so clean to burn. However I can't find any information about soot formation. Just carbon dioxide and water. When I heat up the cup, is it safe to drink with the cup? Any residue that I can't see would stick to steel? And then my lips?
You can make a lid for the cup using NIVEA 150ml tin Art. 801004 cut the bottom of the tin under the line and roll the edge inside. so it is a self contained container. About penny stove? What is the advantage? just use a tiny cup cutting deodorant spry can bottom it is made of sturdy alluminium diameter is smaller than a soda can but thickness is more thick. you don't need a very large burner to heat 400ml up but perhaps you need a support large enough to also accept alcool tablets doing the same trick.

The rest of the soda can will mimic a great wind screen with air holes using a paper puncher. :)
