Heh, I worked on this game. The controls were because a lot of devices wouldn't actually let you press two keys at once - though i think we did add an alternate driving mode where you push in a cardinal direction to get the car to turn that way... Some of the text cutbacks were because of storage limits, and generally the game was more impressive for the things that were achieved than the gameplay itself.
As for the spec, we got that *really* early on, and the shots in the xbox game were from the game very early in development before feedback and changes.
From our viewpoint, we aimed at GTA2 and in some ways it was a success... at the time, though, the problem was being able to do *anything* that was playable on some of the worst handsets imaginable (128x128 screens, for example).
On 50-70% of the handsets, driving was a pain though :/

Yeah so thanks for ruining my life :D (joke) I somehow managed to use the netmite converter and I am now playing it on my android and it's so frickin' hard to play. And you guys promoted it (I've seen the trailer) like if it was REALLY AWESOME. Well it actually could've been if there were less cops,more sounds (some music too) a little better controls and a lot frickin' easier races,I almost broke my phone because of that. But I want to 100% it and then I am going to play SR2 which I am FAR more excited for :D
Yeah, the controls were limited because most of the devices only let you press one key at a time - a lot of the Nokias had no multi-press on the keys.
Sounds were limited to the JAR space available and devices were -really- restrictive. The promo stuff was made way in advance of actual development as the xbox game shipped with assets from the concept art.
I guess by the time SR2 came out phones had more than 62k for the jar and more than 127k ram :)

It wouldn't be outside the possibility for a Saints Row game. Remember, Saint's Row is a world where anything can happen. Saint's Row 4 had aliens and demons, Saint's Row 5 is hinted to take place in an alien city by one of the Gat out of Hell endings. Even before that, Saint's Row 3 had a SHIELD expy and a mission where you drive with tigers. Hell, even in Saint's Row 2, you can get through an insurance fraud without a broken bone and the game allows for some crazy cheat codes. With a cell phone. I just hope that in the final mission, Zombie Carlos busts in, gives us a thumbs up and helps kill the crap out of the remaining clones.
Take a shot for every time I said Saint's Row in my previous comment, and you'll probably get more wasted than my brother on wedding night.

Obviously when Carlos broke out of prison, he used mind wiping powers to make everyone forget then he got ultor to clone him, then he changed his name to Dane Vogel after killing the original Vogel. I thought everyone knew that.

Brendan Smith Apparently you could play multiplayer, but obviously I have no way of testing it since I'm playing on an emulator. I highly doubt it ever even worked to begin with after seeing how broken single-player was.

@@ruiviu9516 If I recall, for SR1 mobile a lot of the things we had were from Alpha/Beta designs from the xbox game - place names, gang names, character names and graphics etc.

It's funny how the 1st Saints Row game I ever played was SR1 on my cellphone and I remember I finished it somehow. Then I remember playing the second game some time later (though since my phone wasn't very good it was pretty limited like no cribs, only one car model available) and then some years later I played Saints Row 2 on PC... And only now I realized that I first met Saints Row series through their mobile games lol

For making this game. I was kinda joking, we did a lot of cool things on it considering the hardware limitations of the day - but to anyone playing on an emulator... Ouch. :)

@@urfavguy Yeah, just the first one - not the sequel. The getting-too-close-to-a-car-you-tail-and-failing is partly my fault. On most devices it was ok, but on others you had to be *really* careful. :D In my defence, I grew up playing 8 bit games that were hard as nails.
I had this game on a Java touch screen samsung phone, and instead of using regular buttons, you had to use touchscreen ones.
It brought a new meaning to the term "cancer brick" used to describe phones.
I thought the second one was pretty good for a java game on mobile.

I remember that the saints row 2 game used to be modded to have gta 5 stuff.
If youre interested, you can now tas this game with libtas. Sadly, only save states work whild frame advance and slow motion cause desyncs.. I would love to see a flawless playthrough of this.
There is also a PSP game that was canceled called Saints Row Undercover. Which was later released for free. It's unfinished and will never be finished but it's nice to see a mobile saints row game that isn't as bad as these.

+Flippy did you see the Volition interview on Champaign’s local Channel 3 News, (linked on Volitions home page) from January 30, 2015 ? They show footage of Saints Row, but it seems to have newer models... Sadly I did not get to play SR 1, so might be cut scenes, sense I do not know that cast that well, but wanted to point it out.

lol. I always liked J2ME java gaming. I always liked playing these Modern Properties with retro gameplay and aesthetics. It reminded me of the GBA, SNES and NES / Game Boy days. Doom RPG was amazing and I also loved the ports of God of War Mobile and UMK3 mobile.

Saint's row is always a gta clone, its just a gta clone that took infamous and blended it in with itself in later sequels
I never understood the term GTA clone, I mean there's games before GTA that used the same third person feature

You know, it could be possible that Saints Row 3 and 4 mobile aren't getting released because THQ has gone defunct, meaning THQ Wireless has gone defunct, meaning they can't make Saints mobile games in the future or any more.

I'm a masochist and I subjected myself to getting as close to 100% on Saints Row 1 mobile as I could possibly get. I think the experience took some years off my lifespan. The worst thing about that game is the god damn police truck hijacking mission. It's next to impossible getting back to the hideout without blowing up the moment you start driving back.
How did you get past the tailing VK mission on Downtown? I get this bug where the camera pans over to the Saints hostages, and the cutscene never ends, it just stays frozen.
@@XanderWhovian I don't think I had that glitch. But generally I just kept retrying until I finally managed to beat the mission I was on.
@@DarkXork I'd say the same, but i've gotten up to that bit 5 times now, and every single time it's just completely froze on me.
