@@polinarius666 Very strange. My two cents: It seems to me that she had some sort of argument with her husband that he wasn't prepared to discuss with law enforcement and she decided to leave and ended up in Asheville. I think she must have had some sort of psychotic break due to the fact she didn't inform any of her family she had decided to go there. She was probably sniffed out by a serial killer who recognised her as an easy target.
It reminds me a little of the Blair Adams case, another very strange one.

Lets look at this: She crashes her car, Rick Forcier walks over to help her and is smoking a cigarette, and helping her make a plan. He goes back to his house to get his car and Butch drives by talks to her, and as soon as he leaves, Maura runs to get in Ricks car and is ushered away.

I think Maura was incredibly depressed and she could have been the hit and run perpetrator. If bad things happened in both her old and new college the problem was probably her. It sounded like her relationship was ending, she had money problems or was just interested in pushing boundaries by committing credit card fraud, she was also developing a drinking problem just like her sister.
That’s a lot to cope with especially when you’re feeling alone.
She said there was a death in the family most likely because she meant herself. She might have had the idea to commit suicide somewhere pleasant that had good memories for her. She began drinking whilst driving and made a half hearted attempt on her life by crashing the car. When she was discovered by the bus driver she panicked and believed that she might have been breathelised - she would be arrested, her dad would have been called and more shame on herself would ensue. She ran, thinking that this was the best option. She got lost, called her boyfriend crying. (Not sure if this will get mentioned) and perhaps fell/ drowned/ froze as the light disappeared.

Not a bad Idea, although they did debunk the phone call to her boyfriend. There wasn’t one ever placed after she went missing. It’s a misconception that got talked about early on in the case

I think true crime fans overestimate this young lady. She was a screw-up, a petty theif (genuine lowlife stuff), and now two car wrecks in a few days that would have been made better bu Daddy. She was going away for privacy to drink herself into oblivion. The DUI would have had her sitting in a cell sobering up, waiting for Daddy.
She skeedaddled into the woods, eventuslly tired and lost, crawled into or under something for warmth, and died there of exposure.

I'm gonna say it was her boyfriend, the one who ended up in jail anyway. I agree she got into a car, the dogs having her scent drop so suddenly means something to me. When that happens, I strongly believe that person didn't continue on foot after that. Especially that close. I don't understand a motive though. Which could lean into the police involvement theory but based on her bf's track record and future offenses... He seems like the most likely scenario. I still just don't understand why. Who knows though, it also could have been a completely random passerby that took an easy opportunity to pick up a woman "in need." She was already out of it, drinking, had a lot going on and not thinking clearly. That makes for an easy target. Unfortunately those things do happen all the time.

Or ... the police SUV that "witness A" saw pass by her, twice, around 7:40 was the police chief and he had already picked Maura up from the accident scene. Instead of the theory that she was already intoxicated and trying to avoid police by leaving, she trusted an officer of the law enough to get in the car with him. She took her important stuff with her. He offered his assistance but maybe this "cop" potentially had psychopathic tendencies. Maybe even knocked her out at some point, perhaps either before or after getting in the car with him. Explains the haste, a door left open and he quickly grabbed her stuff. Now, whether he initially contributed to her accident because he had his own issues with drinking, definitely possible. But I don't think a police cover up is that far-fetched at all. In fact, I think police corruption and deception within authority is WAY more common place than many like to believe. Cecil Smith absolutely could have been given the directive to stage the scene, perhaps even with the alcohol before the state trooper arrived & to corroborate the story with Atwood. It's just weird to lie and say you found the drink mixed with the alcohol only after the tow truck came yet the state trooper's more consistent account contradicts it. And to stage it like the door was closed|locked when "witness A" drove by and saw the door left opened? Hm. Did witness A even see Maura at around 7:40 when she drove by the car because it sounds like Maura was likely already gone. A staged closed & locked door definitely appears less onimous than a wide open door. Makes it appear like a person took steps to leave their car rather than suddenly or unexpectedly.
I don't think Atwood was directly involved in whatever happened to Maura but it sounds like he could potentially have been involved in a cover-up via. Officer Smith, who could have already been prepped by the chief when arriving at the scene. I've heard Atwood's accounts have altered and not been that consistent, which unfortunately, can send up red flags. I mean, if he happened upon Maura and spoke with her directly to inquire if she needed any help prior to 7:40 &;Witness A, presumably around 7:30 , why wait all that time at 7:46 to suddenly inform police somebody needed help? That's potentially around 20 minutes regardless of your regular routine. Not only would he have seen the other police SUV on the scene that Witness A observed driving by because his property had a clear view of the accident scene, but is it possible there was interaction between Atwood & the first Police SUV already there within that 10 minute gap of 7:35 - 7:46? Did the chief ask him to make the "call" which brought Smith out next? I do think small tight knit communities can be complicit in a cover up especially when dealing with perceived authority figures. Who knows who might know who.
The one that stumps me too is the first caller claiming she saw a guy smoking a cigarette at the car with the commotion at the trunk and then redacting it. That's weird. What are they trying to hide with the redaction except moving people away from looking deeper into it. Was it somebody else the town knew that the police covered up for, including the chief? Hm. I suppose a theory to throw out there is Maura picked up someone on that road along the way and they attacked her while driving. That could have potentially caused the accident too and caller one was seeing the attacker. I was listening to Julie Murray explain that whoever looked at the car didn't think the damage was caused by impact of a tree. And when their father finally got to the car, he started it up and tested it out; it was still drivable. So why wouldn't Maura have just driven away unless she was prevented from doing that somehow?
This was just something else I heard when I watched an interview about when they used the search dogs and at one point came to a house close by where a man had been doing work on a basement. It was dirt ground and the like and he said he'd come back to finish what he needed to do, well, he comes back to find the whole basement floor suddenly cemented over. He thought it was strange and I guess reached out because this was at the time Maura went missing. Well, when they asked the homeowner if they could just do a search down there, they refused. The new homeowners agreed to allow it because the dogs were alerted. What I found "off" was when they came in to dig it, the dig wasn't in the same area the dogs had originally sniffed out and the Attorney General tried telling the family it was just a rat or something. When the dogs are specifically trained for the scent of humans. Anyway, found that to be ... interesting.
    Who knows.

It’s very possible the reason she walked back into her work that night in a catatonic state is because she was the one who accidentally hit
a intoxicated College student named Patrice Vassey with her car
She was possibly the driver involved in a hit and run accident, that could be why she met her dad and he withdrew money so they could get rid of the car involved in the accident and buy a new one
Could also be why she was headed to the white mountains to get out of town, she was probably afraid that she killed him and that maybe someone seen the accident and knew the police would investigate

Just to let you know, Smith covered for Williams. Williams harassed me at my job, and both were on duty. Smith did nothing to stop him. Williams was seriously scary, and I don't scare easily. He just was not right. And mean. So, from what I experienced, I would not put anything past those two. Did you notice the tire tracks drawn on the police report? Just as Witness A described where the SUV was parked? And another point, Atwood's call was transferred to Hanover and when Atwood was called back by dispatch, they were told by Atwood's girlfriend she did not know where the female was. Just after the time Witness A said she had driven through.

Or did he offer to make a call using his landline because he knew Maura had no cell service and neither did he?
The only people there that had any kind of 'communications' were the police and their radios and witnesses who had landlines.

I think it was a crime of opportunity. She grabbed her booze and was going to lay low and hoped police just left the car and she would go back. Someone probably offered to help her. Maybe saw her walking and picked her up. She had to think fast! Definitely feel like the guy with the cigarette is a real thing. Why would that woman say that if she didn't see. Dosen't make sense. The idea that she started a new life is very doubtful and she didn't walk out into the woods and die either. Highly unlikely imo

This exactly! She was not abducted in that ‘small window of time’ - she was hiding from the cops in the wood nearby watching. When the cop left she hit the road and eventually hitched a lift. She was most likely picked up long after that cop had left when she’d headed back on the road walking towards town. There was a report of a woman seen walking on the road a while after her crash.

I find it more likely that a drunk and distraught college kid lost her way in the dark, dense woods while she was trying to evade the cops. She was not dressed properly at all. She was not even wearing her gloves. She was extremely stressed and probably sleep-deprived to boot. And what if she had a head injury? She'd been in 2 major car accidents in as many days. That's insane. She may have been disoriented and confused. I think she died from hypothermia, exacerbated by the alcohol in her system, and her body was missed in searches. They did not even do a proper search until 3 days later. If she was spotted 5 miles from the crash site by just after 8 PM, think of how far she could have gotten in the woods before she succumbed. She may have curled up somewhere hidden in an attempt to get warm. They found human bones near Loon Mountain in 2021. I think this was 25 miles from where she crashed. Everyone thought they could be Maura's. But they were tested and it was found they had been there for at least 100 years... maybe as far back as the 18th century. They'd sat there all that time, and no one had found them until 2021! She could easily be out there.

The more I think about this, The more I believe:
Atwood lied from the get go, and Maura (maybe at first declined) but knowing she was looking at a DUI, on top of other troubles in Mass.
She did eventually decide to jump into Butch's Bus or Car to hide from authorities.
The tragedy in this is that in many of these rural areas with small Police Dept's it's common for local residents to offer and give assistance to police.
So when Officer C. Smith arrived he mistakingly accepted Atwood's story and in that moment accepted the help, (meaning Atwood's roose of going to search for Maura).
Atwood knows Maura is already hiding in his bus or car.
At the time it would seem innocent enough to Officer Smith, car is spun out, not a tremendous amount of damage, Per Atwood: driver was speaking then walks away.
Let's see if we can locate her.
Atwood shoulda never been allowed to leave that scene until his home, bus, car & property were completely searched.
Atwood either drove Maura out of there right after speaking with Officer Smith, or waited until everyone cleared the scene.

She was already running away from her problems at home - I don't think she brought anyone with her. I agree with the idea that she didn't want to get into anymore trouble. When you are drinking, you don't realize how cold it is plus your body is more susceptible because of the alcohol. She could have easily found a hiding spot, fell asleep and passed away from hypothermia without ever waking up. They say that there were no tracks, but the snow was sparse enough that she could have hopped over the bit at the side of the road and gone off through the woods where the snow hadn't accumulated. Not to mention ahe just found out her sister had slept with her either current bf or ex bf (can't remember which) I think that's the family emergency. She also had a lot if mental issues going on too. But, I think your theory is 1000% correct. Her remains were scattered by animals and were thus never found. Edit for clarification...I'm not so sure about the hit and run part. I think some mental illness or mental breakdown caused her to make some bad decisions in unforgiving weather and nature.

Ocams Razor theory- the tracking dogs stopping where they did, in front of the bus drivers house:
She never went beyond that point on foot.
Picked up? Walked to the guys house who stopped to check on her? Other questions follow that. But that is one thing that stands out, what are the odds her scent stops at the house of the bus driver and its totally random? He admitted to stopping to check on her (not saying hes guilty of anything) - but its odd.

    • @TheCellarTrueCrime

It is and logically the last person typically has some involvement. Sadly the bus driver is long since gone and it doesn’t seem like any answer are ever going to come in this case. I hope they do one day, I truly do

    • @x1r0n83
      @x1r0n83 18 дней назад

@TheCellarTrueCrime That's really unfortunate if in fact he had any involvement. It's just such a weird case with a very small window of time between her last being seen and first officer arriving on scene. The last person to see her coincidentally is where her scent trail ends to boot.
I grew up and still live in the white mountains, I don't think we will ever have answers with Maura either, and it's so heartbreaking for all who loved her.

I am 98% sure I heard an episode of Crimehub The other night that claimed a group of investors in 2024 used ground radar to find a well, and located a diary thought to be written by her, and lastly that a vagrant from the area had confessed! I'm not joking, but I paused the episode to Google case updates. And now I can't relocate the episode wyh! Does anyone have a subscription to Crimehub who can jump to the end of that episode and tell me if I'm crazy? I swear it's what I heard. Lol, but it's strange that after I paused and came back it's gone, now the episode seems to only be available to subscribers..

Not to mention they also checked side roads and dirt roads in the immediate area and they also checked both sides of those roads for footprints as well, there were none. If you want the REAL STORY. This case remains intriguing. Maura had secrets that led to her demise. The theories all point that she was some confused drunk girl who didn't know what she was doing and in some state of panic. She was a cadet, she was a nurse. She wasn't stupid. She would have been found if she was dead in the woods after the widespread search -- the winter weather would have preserved her body-- even cadaver dogs didn't find her. She had a more viable plan to escape to a new life..

I disagree if she was that cunning she wouldn’t be in that situation in the first place. If she wanted to disappear why let so many people see her. Unfortunately, I think she went to hide from police and succumbed to the elements.

    • @wulfsorenson8859
      @wulfsorenson8859 9 месяцев назад +7

She probably hid in the woods from the cops after the crash. Later she came out and decided to walk to town and probably flagged down a passing car to avoid the cold. The mistake people make is thinking she disappeared in the 7m window before the cop arrived. Most likely the culprit picked her up and killed her hours later. There was a report from a neighbor of a woman seen jogging down the road one hour after she crashed. It was 17miles on the dark cold road to town.

Maybe...but she probably didn't plan to wreck her car. I've never heard exactly why her car wouldn't go. Would the car not start or did she have a flat? I've never heard what exactly was wrong with her car.

@@tamijoyce5086 it went into a ditch and she couldn’t get it out. So she packed up her stuff and ran off before the cops arrived to avoid a DUI. Remember she was already on probation for using a stolen credit card so she was looking at jail and being expelled from Amherst if she was picked up by police.
