Through these and other activities the Academy serves students, historians, the entertainment industry and people everywhere who love movies.
It was an honor just to be nominated.
You should have used the Force to win.
Why didn't you use Jedi mind tricks to win, missed opportunity
These aren't the Oscars you are looking for.
holy shit it's obi wan kenobi
Jason Robards' second CONSECUTIVE win in this category. Impressive!
RIP Alec Guiness, Jason Robards and Maximilian Schell
RIP Jason Robards (July 26, 1922 - December 26, 2000), aged 78
You will always be remembered as a legend.
Jason never gave a bad performance. A truly great actor.
Can't decide what's more adorable: Maggie's look or her voice :)
OMG Maggie as a presenter? What a rare treat! :) Love her and Michael Caine!
THANKS OSCARS! :)
They were a sheer delight in California Suite (as a couple who are actors just after the Oscars!) They made Neil Simon sound like Noel Coward.
Maggie is the most elegent, beautiful presenter I think I've ever seen! Oh my gooooooosh!!! She's soooooooooo beautiful and attractive! Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Her voice is the same as now ! MAGGIE IS SO CHIC AND BEAUTIFUL , I LOCE HER !!
At about the 52 min mark in the 1978 film California Suite you see Michael Caine and Maggie Smith turn up at these awards, not as themselves but as the married couple they were playing in this movie. Maggie Smith played an actress nominated for Best Actress and she and Michael Caine are introduced to the waiting fans on the real red carpet as the characters from the film, which no doubt confused all those present. Ironically, Maggie Smith then went on to win Best Supporting Actress a year later at the 1979 Oscars for the part she played in California Suite.
Cheyenne did it 2 years in a row. Legend behaviour.
Maggie Smith, who was playing an actress up for an Oscar, and Caine her husband, in the movie “California Suite”, were at the ‘78 Awards in-character to film red carpet scenes for the movie; since they were already there, they were asked to present an award.
The best acceptance speech ever!
Jason Robards , one of the best.
These two really made the film California Suite.
jason robards like, 'i already got one, big whoop'
Sir Alec Guinness - Obi Wan Kenobi
Sir Ian McKellen - Gandalf the Grey
Johnny Depp - Captain Jack Sparrow
Robards was doing a play and notified the Academy that he could not attend. He was seriously pissed with Bob Hope's joke - as vowed never to attend the ceremony again - which he never did.
+Michael Muldowney I hope not. It was a dopey joke ut done in good fun.
+notaniceguy34 Robards was pissed because he was honoured to be nominated - lumping him in with Scott and Brando gave the impression that he didn't want the award.
Michael Muldowney uh huh...sure
Peter Cushing should have been nominated for Star Wars too
No.
I like Peter, but no.
I have seen Michael Caines performance in GET CARTER 1971 and boy it was definatelly his most pressurest and psychologically affectioning performance to date but i simply adorred Caine in California Suite and Deathtrap his performances were much less agressive and pressuress
Back to back Oscars for Jason Robards.
I'm glad Alec Guiness didn't win. Even when he was happy to reprise his role on the later films of the franchise, he hated the extreme attention Obi-Wan brought to him at this point of life. With an Oscar the attention would have tripled. Also, at this moment he was already a respected actor.
And the winner should have been Peter Firth in Equus even though his role was a lead along with Richard Burton. He was excellent in a difficult role. Ironically, he was the only one of the 5 nominees who was at the ceremony.
Was Peter Firth the only Supporting Actor nominee present? :-/
robards was furious at Bob Hope's joke. Had it been an improvisation by Hope he would not have cared - but it was scripted. Robards notified the academy that he could not attend several weeks before - it was clear that the shows writers saw this as a good spot for an "ad lib" by Hope in the event of Robards winning.
Maggie and Michael would've been a great couple! They had so much chemistry in California Suite.
robards is a legend, loved him in OUATITW, but Guinness should have won this >
Peter Firth was the only one to show up? Really?
Yes. And he could be considered the frontrunner.
Bob Hope was simply unfair to Jason Robards because Mr. Robards had informed the academy ahead of time that he wasn't able to attend. Mr Hope insulted him.
All you champions of Guinness also probably drink too much of it. And that you're likely Star Wars fans rather than film buffs? Have you any idea who Jason Robards and Maximillian Schell are? Have you ever seen JULIA, or do you know what it's about?
Jerome Joseph Gentes hello there. General Kenobi!!!
Well that's a bit pretentious. Personally, I think Guinness did an excellent job bringing me to life!
Don’t be such a snob. People are entitled to their opinion.
Jerome Yes I have seen Julia and it's a well made pointless film and Maximillian Schell has a very small role, Robards is doing Robards and Redgrave wasn't a deserving winner either here. The great bond between Julia and Lillian isn't grasped because we don't see them together very much and the film should have been called Lillian since she is really the main character and many feel that this self aggrandizing story based on fact was in fact totally made up by Hellman. The movie is an elegant dud!
A little bit different than Vanessa Redgraves acceptance. Both Maggie and Michael are still hanging in there. If you want to see a British Actress give two incredible performances in a supporting role. Watch Sylvia Syms in Victim 1961 Starring Dirk Bogarde and Directed by Basil Dearden. Sylvia plays the much younger wife Laura of Dirk They have three incredible scenes together. One in their living room about halfway thru the film one in the same place at the end of the film and one at Laura’s school. Also The Tamarind Seed 1974 Directed by Blake Edwards Starring his wife Julie Andrews. A Cold War spy thriller. Sylvia plays the wife of a British diplomat Dan O Herlihy who may or may not be a Soviet spy. Sylvia has one of the most intense breakdown scenes I have ever seen. She was nominated for a Bafta sadly not an Oscar. Sylvia passed away this January 6 th in her beloved London.
A time when the Academy was brave enough to say "AND THE WINNER IS" instead of "AND THE OSCAR GOES TO".
Michael Caine- TEACHER OF LIFE LESSONS
erika its okay now....just fine
Oh come on, kastrat!
Peter Firth and Richard Burton were far superior in their acting abilities in 'Equus' than Jason Robards and Richard Dreyfuss in, respectively, 'Julia' and 'The Goodbye Girl' that year.
Trouble was: 'Equus' did not make anyone feel warm and fuzzy. In fact, I remember people actually saying they wanted to quickly forget the film ... for it's harrowing violence, for it's sexuality, for it's emotional claustrophobia, for it's psychological overtones.
Robards had only a few minutes of screen time in 'Julia,' but what was there was commanding and fully drawn. He WAS Dashiell Hammett - drunk, contancorous, maudlin, wizened, a master at his craft.
Alec Guiness hated his own role in 'Star Wars' and was quite public about how ridiculous he thought the screenplay was. Harrison Ford as Han Solo in the same film would've been a better choice.
It may not be a popular choice, but I thought Richard Gere gave a starmaker performance that year in 'Looking for Mr. Goodbar' and I thought he should've been on this list. Also, Donald Sutherland was scary as a Facist sadist in the epic '1900.' Sutherland has yet to win an Oscar in competition and this would've been a great time to acknowledge him relatively early on (although, even by 1977, it appeared Oscar was asleep at the switch when it came to Sutherland's unique talents. Such would curiously remain so for the next 40 years.)
I have no problem with Robards winning, but Peter Firth would've been the one real accolade 'Equus' could've (should've?) won.
And Bob Hope as announcer was just an insufferable supercilious ass. That's why he was soon replaced.
Robards was in Julia more than a few minutes.
It's a shame Richard Gere has never been nominated I thought he deserved a nomination for An Officer and a Gentleman and for Chicago well we all know how unfair the Oscar's are which is why fewer and fewer watch the show and they get low ratings when people see that you're unfair you cease to be relevant Richard Gere probably doesn't even know how to care about not being nominated being a Buddhist he's so above that
That was before California Suit, where they worked together and was the second Oscar of Maggie Smith.
Michael Caine taking extra time to say they're running short on time 🤣🤣🤣
Michael Caine reminds me of his portrayal of Harry Palmer in The Ipcress File and Funeral In Berlin. He's a great actor and a wonderful man. Smith is an extraordinary actress and talent; I didn't realize until recently that Toby Stephens, who played the villain in the Pierce Brosnan /James Bond movie Die Another Day, is her son with Robert Stephens.
I just realized that they filmed the oscar scene for california suite at the actual oscars that year
Jason Robards has great acting in Julia.
+jwelch5742 but Newman has better acting in the hustler
What a joke. Peter Firth completely deserved the Oscar. Nobody beats his incredible performance in Equus. Those have seen the film will agree with me.
alec guinness should have won, he was great as obi wan!!
The Academy were (and are) a bit snobby concerning science ficton movies.
Well deserved--for Jason to win the same award two years in a row was quite an accomplishment. His ONLY competition really was Max Schell for the same movie.
"Jason Robards couldn't be here as he's busy working next year's best supporting actor oscar."
Bob Hope. Michael Caine. Turning Point. Alec G., Jason Roberts. Star War. Marlon Brando.
I like Michael Caine's glasses ^^
Bob Hope was the master!
way to go bob hope, this is why jason robards refused to attend any more oscar ceremonies
Probably from the movie JULIA. Go on IMDB & see who wrote the score.
Holy shit I only recognized Maggie by her voice.
Guys who could please tell me the name of music played when the winner was announced?
Wow, I'm way late.. but it's the main theme from Julia.
It SO should have gone to Alec Guiness :(
Maybe
Peter Firth should have won.
Lol only one nominee came to the ceremony, the showrunner didn't even bother to show the close ups
I was there
I love Star Wars as much as the next geek. But it deserves no acting Oscar.
Alec Guinness did. He was amazing.
This should have gone to Ben Kenobi, Alec Guinness deserved it hard, he should have won his second Oscar here!!!!!
The only time Bob Hope made a joke that he wrote himself, and it was hilarious! Hahahaha.
@Wired4Life2 YES. THIS. How do you pass over Obi-Wan?!
Lmao nobody bothered to attend. This is so tragic.
well deserved:)
For Star Wars haters maybe.
Dude stop being so pissed off. I liked Guinnes in SW too. Its funny that according to you, if someone Thinks one guy is better than Another one, that immediately makes the other one terrible. Rofl your such a immature fanboy.
Does anybody know the music played by the Academy Awards orchestra when Maggie Smith and Michael Caine walked out onto the stage?
Rule Britannia.
Do 5 indicados só 1 venho!
Ironically Bob Hope was born in England.
lol only one of the nominees was there?
wow- only 1 nomanee was there- that's sad!
Jason Robards was Matthew Broderick's godfather.
Only one nominee was present lol
Firth was SO robbed...
And worse, he was the only one who went through the trouble to be there
DEFINITELY robbed. A tour de force, his performance.
Must say that sir Michael Caine was very handsome guy in his youth.
He got grey by 1997
Professor McGonaggall!
Holy crap, Maggie Smith actually went to an Oscar show?!
The only acting performance in Star Wars to be nominated for an Oscar.
@1:49 "Where is 'e?"
Bob Hope, just fantastic.
Michael Caine is such a techer of life he always likes to teach people obout life lessons he can be quite annoyng
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Alec Guiness was robbed
Bob Hope: The most tedious teleprompter reader of the 20th Century.
It wasn't even a teleprompter, it was cue cards.
1:24
Peter Firth was robbed.
only 1 bothered to show up...sad
Maggioe
is so female
He's not here so Alec Guiness, come on up, you're next in line!
This, along with Vanessa Redgrave's, are two of the least deserving Oscar wins- EVER.
Jason Robards is barely in the movie.
He does what he did best at this point
-the 'ol craggie face routine, done to more significance in All The President's Men.
I'm guessing Robards was so revered, people just automatically pulled the lever for him.
Vanessa Redgrave deserved her Oscar. Schell should have won
who remembers Robards now? Everyone remembers Obi Wan! :) He should've won!
Obi Won forever 😊
Bob Hope was a truly overrated MC, watching his cheesy crap makes me uncomfortable
Oh, poor you.
sir alec got robbed
