I love that you gave depersonalization and derealization the recognition that they need. They serve a purpose, but it becomes very painful, when they become chronic and the switch gets kinda stuck.
I always forced myself to focus and listen to my teacher but I always zoned out like bro the worst part is that, you didn't know your zoning out and imagining things on your mind and missed some important lessons then you will notice it later that you zoned out 😭😭😭😭
For a few seconds I " zone out" it's a very comfortable trance, can hear or understand what I being said. But almost always triggered when learning new things at training for a new job.
Oh my god Me too...I learn/listen better when I zone out or Stare off into the distance...coz all I have to do is focus on hearing and I get distracted when I look at the person talking coz something might catch my eyes and I start thinking about it and i stop paying attention..
Why do people have intrusive thoughts? I was diagnosed with PTSD and I notice whenever something triggers me I get quite alot of bad/violent thoughts running through my head.
Idk but i have them so much its annoying it goes from just basic things like idk breaking something to stuff that could put me in high danger like jumping of somewhere, Selfharm ,or harming others
I too have the same exact experience. I think everyone probably has them (perhaps they just don't show it). I just think of crazy things to do like hurt someone or break something. I have learned as a Christian Catholic that these thoughts come from the devil and should not be acted upon. However, whether you are a Christian or not, just don't worry about your thoughts. You can just dismiss them or you could talk to someone you trust about them, to see if they share your experience also. Hope this helps! 😊👍
I zone out mostly when I’m with a group of friends I just start to get quiet and look away, sometimes I just look somewhere when I’m with my friends and then I walk there alone without saying anything idk why I do this all the time and my friends are like are u okay and it’s hard to explain to them why I just randomly left to go somewhere and stand alone for like 5 mins and it’s so hard cuz I just feel like walking away or not talking idk 🤷🏻♀️

I used to go to my car and watch RUclips video while they were party indoor . Once the day is over it feels satisfying ,,,, and it's crazy because 5 years ago I am the party freak .
I do this too. Cause most of the time when they are talking I kinda zone out and my thoughts is suddenly somewhere . Or I have other thoughts in my head that I only hear mg thoughts and not the person in front of me. So that kinda paints me dumb cause I zone out and sometimes I am sleepy I cannot hear anyone when I zone out they are like background noise in my head and I do think of something else ( just things I want to do amd create ).
My teacher in kindergarten thought I had adhd, I zone out a lot in school but always thought it was being tired, I don’t think I have anxiety but I do repeat things in my head a lot, normally after I have a conversation with someone or in the middle of talks, and I forget what I was talking about. I also zone out a lot by just sitting at my desk doing work. It’s interesting and I might go to a doctor but I don’t know, you tell me if I should.
im so happy you are back! i bet you are helping a lot of people who went thru stress during the quarantine, also doc can you talk about anorexia a bit in a video? when you have to deal with anxiety disorder and anorexia at the same time its really confusing it makes you feel hopeless. Hope you are safe!
I zone out like every 15-30 seconds everyday and Yes I was diagnosed professionally with Borderline Personality Disordee, it feels like I have dementia to others perspective, it sounds like the pseudodementia you mentioned in the video
Wow, I have every single one of these 😓 I so deeply appreciate the knowledge shared and the language I’ve gained for myself here. On my way to learning more about my brain!
Are there levels of zoning out? I used to zone out such that I used to lose track of time while I was in school. Zoning out was also linked with some particular type of music. The type of music used to usher me to it (even thinking about that music). I had mixed feelings about zoning out good and bad at the same time but it was mild however significant and impactful. I'm talking about when I was not more than 10-12 years of age. Neither did I understood what that feeling was, nor did I come across anything over the internet that matched my condition.
What can I do if I'm unable to find a psychiatrist?! I often find myself zoning out in the middle of my school lecturers. I wanna focus on the teacher but somehow I zone out without realizing. It's really frustrating. What can I do?!
Why do I feel relaxed when I just stare at one place like for example when I’m eating my smoothie. And my mom says don’t do that. And my eyes just stare at one spot and sometimes open my eyes widely. What is that?

For me, zoning out is a normal thing on a daily basis since i think about stuff non stop 24/7 whether its memories that have been triggered, or just random thoughts in general but I've noticed that I zone out while I'm either talking to myself or with someone and and I zone out a lot more when I'm overwhelmed, or when I'm just sad, I'm not sure why I zone out more when I'm upset but maybe I should try to pay attention to it and see why, also if anyone knows why it occurs or if it happens to you, feel free to let me know because I love connecting with others on this type of topic/ level
I can't count the number of times I zone out during the day. I didn't realise this before because it was very normal for me as it has always been like that. I tend to continuously look at a particular thing like wall, or a board while thinking about something intensely. Sometimes when I am listening to a teacher I start thinking about what they said at that very moment and miss all that they said next. It's really frustrating. I also automatically start thinking about something else when I have to listen to something important. When I am doing a paper, particularly a math problem, I continuosly keep thinking about the next step and commit a mistake in the step I was doing at that time. And somewhere inside my brain I know about that mistake bcz of lack of attention but my attention never gets diverted towards it and I never realise the said mistake. Tbh that's why I'm here. I want to know how I can programme my brain to be able to pay enough attention to the problem at hand and break years of automatic zoning out.
Wow you named alot of what I what I go through day by day. This video was very helpful. I'll make sure to tell my therapist about my zoning out. Too. 👍
How about basic things like getting enough sleep, eat properly and don't skip meals like breakfast or lunch, like so many school kids do. Your brain needs food and sleep to function properly. Zoning out occasionally is perfectly normal, your brain can't be at full attention non-stop. You don't need to fill every gap in the day with phone browsing or TV. Give your brain a chance to wander sometimes so it can process all that input you give it everyday. Stop pulling out your phone as soon as you have a minute alone on the train or bus. Give your brain a chance to breathe. Stop using social media apps so often because they can be addicting and kill your long-term attention span. You keep getting a quick 'hit' every time you flick to the next video, or every time someone reacts to your post. This instant gratification is like a drug and you are training your brain to always look for the next immediate hit, rather than having the discipline to focus for longer less-stimulating periods. There are so many day-to-day common sense factors to consider before you go running to a doctor thinking you have some kind of genuine disorder that's not related to these things.
I have a zoning out problem alot, like I have zoned out for a week now and even in some part of this video. I just wanted to know what to do about it and how do I know if I have ADHD? And if I do, how do I treat it without having to go to a psychiatrist?

I sure I’m doing this multiple times a day. (I have a sticker on the cupboard my coffee is in that says “coffee in here!” Cuz I can’t ever find it even though I’ve kept it there forever.

Hi Mr. Duff I have been diagnosed with depression ADHD and anxiety for about five years now. I keep trying to read and learn how to drive but I feel like I can’t get out of autopilot. It’s like I see everything but my mind is empty and has a block making me unable to truly comprehend things. What should I do?
I smoked weed once and never again after 3 months now and this is when it started for me. Did it break my brain chemistry or something. Did I become dumb? I am 16. I just took one puff I only tried it and I got super high and almost got a panic attack maybe I did I don’t know what that feels like but I was hallucinating I will say that.
Not sure if this is exactly what I do. Since as long I remember I’ve been doing this thing where my eyes just lock on one point and it’s like my body shuts down. For others it looks like I’m just sitting and starring, but my brain is going full speed and that’s “where I am”. I don’t have any kind of memory loss- Actually it’s the other way around. My brain keeps playing scenarios that have happened in the past. But sometimes I’m just blank. Like a zombie. It effects my concentration, which really bothers me, because it hinders me from accomplishing what I want to. Just wish I could stop it, so I could live up to my potential. Does any of you know, what this is called?
I zoned out in the middle of my driver's license's exam. I failed obv and it sucks because i keep wondering the reason why it happened to me. Anyway i had a panic attack right after and now, after a couple of days from the event, i don't remember anything.
Pls help do you know how to stop this zoning out stuff , i am it my 25s now and I have responsibilities I want to get out of zoning out pls tell me how do I do that😭I am depressed as hell and wanna live a good lifeas before but now zoning out in middle of the day and it's not feeling good😭😓
Doctor I always zone out when I try to think about a answer in school & when I zone out I stop thinking about the answer. So not asking for much but can u pls tell how to stop zoneing out everyday
Okay, I need to fully comprehend what I just watched. Ummm, I do have quite bad memory problems and I have been told I have anxiety problems and of course the zoning out. This happens a lot during the day and It’s stopping me from learning properly when I am at school and considering my GCSE’s start next week I have a big problem here. I have been to the hospital once before to get a blood test (cannot remember what for) but they said I’m quite low on Vitamin D so I started taking supplements. I also started getting headaches before this too so that was why I went to the hospital. I now think that it’s probably just a screw up in my head and my mum and dad have told me before that it’s quite likely I could have ADHD because of the symptoms that I have described in the past before (therefore still happening now) Jeez I zoned out a lot while typing this, lol, but my point is I have no idea what is causing this anymore so I just watched this and now ik I just gotta see the doctors again! Cheers
What is it called if I kinda disappear into the fog? Like my life becomes out of focus from life. Like you vaguely exist, then you try to be in your body, but cannot stay in. You know you are there, but you can not really focus in on someones words but you can hear their voices. I always had that since I was little. Oh and I have social anxiety, but I just blank out. I dont know how to describe it but its like faintly or vaguely existing.
@@duffthepsych Thank you so much, I will check it out. I have had it for a long time and just got diagnosed with social anxiety last year. I just thought I was just zoning out more often than other people. I will look into it.
Hi namaste from India I usually get zone out ,I don’t even realise what I am doing I have been travelling And suddenly I realised I reached a different city and don’t even feel the transit the above was just a example I don’t know what Trauma I have been true I cannot identify that neither I am depressed I do not feel that there is anything which is going wrong in my life but somehow I do not feel what is happening with me I I have changed a lot I do not give importance to thing as I used to I have to always take a long breath and then realise what is happening
I used to be able to laser focus on things. Now I have to push in small time doses to do the same. It's as if the brain gets tired and then goes "Squirrel"!! Trying to do too many things too well in life and then the world throwing wrenches in forcing you to constantly adjust. Mix that with Computers, internet, cell phones and all jobs thinking tech is key..... OVERLOAD.......... I think the next generations may not fare well. We've lost the basics. I miss being bored.
sometimes when i zone out i dont want to i will be watching something, i zone out and i cant stop bc i cant really move i can talk and stuff but i zone out and get annoyed cuz i cant see what im watching lmao
I have this habit which I believe to be unhealthy and need to work on. Frequently, I go back and forth from fixating my eyes on my surrounding to not looking or seeing (My eyes are open and seem like i am looking at my surrounding from someone else’s point of view, although I am not) . For instance, sometimes when walking, brushing my teeth, when thinking hard, i catch myself not visually focusing on my surrounding, then i go back to paying attention. and so on and so forth. This zoning out visually happens most frequently when i am stressed and also idle. Sometimes when i watch a movie on tv, i find myself to have zoned out and i therefore have to rewind to catch up on what i have missed. Unless when i am doing something which requires focus and concentration, is when i look continuously/ consistently (like playing video games etc). This happens frequently throughout the day. Most of the times this zoning out happens briefly in short bouts and sometimes for a longer period of time: when i am stressed, idle, or tired. It is sometimes accompanied by mind wondering( ruminating about random thoughts) and sometimes no thoughts at allI. I am just not there. Its like being asleep but physically awake. I have been doing this throughout my life unintentionally, and this behaviour has recently come to my attention. My dilemma is whether my mindfulness to my surrounding should be consistent/ permanent throughout my day? I am confused and sometimes depressed as i Yearn to know what is the right thing to do. Thank you.
I have ptsd and I have adhd and it’s not fun I zone out quite a lot and it mostly happens at school like I won’t even know what’s happening and then all the sudden I’m like what was I doing where am I but it only last for like a minute or less cuz it’s not that bad but I feel like adhd and ptsd r kind out connected in some way with dissociative disorder
I also have social anxiety but I didn’t feel like that was relevant but some days when I’m at school it does feel like I’m on auto pilot like I can’t focus I freeze it’s like I’m not really thinking about anything and I’m more so just walking around going to my classes getting my work done just without thinking and it does get hard because like the next day or something you be like I don’t even know what I did yesterday or you just can’t remember as much so yeah it does get difficult
I’ve been trying to wipe that smudge on my phone just to find out that’s something in the background. Please tell me I’m not the only one who thought that🤦🏾♂️

Thanks for the info Robert! Do you perhaps know more about derealization/depersonalization and would like to make a video about this topic? I’ve experienced this quite a lot, regularly, and quite intensely a year or two ago. At the moment it’s constantly like a 1 or 2 on a scale of 1-10, so it’s still there but not _that_ intense anymore. I believe it is caused by the fact that I’ve had a stutter for my whole life, this had an enormous impact on my childhood. I’m thinking about going to therapy about it, can’t hurt right! :D Take care!

I so zoned out at the end. If this is an issue, how am I going to pay attention long enough to hear what I need to do? Lol. Always daydreaming.
I zoned out in the middle of my driver's license's exam. I failed obv and it sucks because i keep wondering the reason why it happened to me.
Anyway i had a panic attack right after and now, after a couple of days from the event, i don't remember anything.
When i hear people describing symptoms I have I start shivering
I now think that it’s probably just a screw up in my head and my mum and dad have told me before that it’s quite likely I could have ADHD because of the symptoms that I have described in the past before (therefore still happening now)
Jeez I zoned out a lot while typing this, lol, but my point is I have no idea what is causing this anymore so I just watched this and now ik I just gotta see the doctors again! Cheers
You brought up the vitamin deficiency and it's true that vitamin deficiency has a large impact on how you think and feel
@@mikokennoob5032 that’s called depersonalization and/or derealization
@duffthepsych Thank you Doc.
@@mikokennoob5032 More information on episode 350 of my podcast!
@@duffthepsych Thank you so much, I will check it out. I have had it for a long time and just got diagnosed with social anxiety last year. I just thought I was just zoning out more often than other people. I will look into it.
Hi namaste from India
I usually get zone out ,I don’t even realise what I am doing I have been travelling And suddenly I realised I reached a different city and don’t even feel the transit the above was just a example I don’t know what Trauma I have been true I cannot identify that neither I am depressed I do not feel that there is anything which is going wrong in my life but somehow I do not feel what is happening with me I I have changed a lot I do not give importance to thing as I used to
I have to always take a long breath and then realise what is happening
I used to be able to laser focus on things. Now I have to push in small time doses to do the same. It's as if the brain gets tired and then goes "Squirrel"!! Trying to do too many things too well in life and then the world throwing wrenches in forcing you to constantly adjust. Mix that with Computers, internet, cell phones and all jobs thinking tech is key..... OVERLOAD.......... I think the next generations may not fare well. We've lost the basics. I miss being bored.
What about autism? I have that sorta problem in my day to day practice time. I am a musician.
It's weird for me when I zone out sometimes I get up and run for like a second and snap back I don't know what it is
sometimes when i zone out i dont want to i will be watching something, i zone out and i cant stop bc i cant really move i can talk and stuff but i zone out and get annoyed cuz i cant see what im watching lmao
I zone out and I don’t remember much I once zoned out on the road and almost crashed havent road by my self
I’ve been trying to wipe that smudge on my phone just to find out that’s something in the background. Please tell me I’m not the only one who thought that🤦🏾♂️
I think I may have adhd, but I can’t get my mum or dad to help me find out or get diagnosed. How do I find out?? (If I have adhd)
what if its absent seizures ? how do you know the difference . Sometimes i zone out while I'm driving my vision just becomes blurry and double and i cant help it . It happens in conversations even when i am full on paying attention . Happens while im reading or watching tv . Ugh its so frustrating.
A neurologist could help determine that!
I have violent things rushing through my head when someone let's me down
Say these words in Arabic and those thoughts will go away “أعوذ بالله من “الشيطان الرجيم
I zone out when I'm tired
I call it going “space cadet”
I had to replay parts of this video because I couldn't pay attention to all the information. Come on brain, make it stick! make a stick... stick. Sticks are parts of trees, right?
oh right, add
Okay but why do I zone out when I’m driving . I’ll drive and keep driving till I realized oh I passed my exit like 5 exits ago
i usually zone out while im at work but its only on the days i work super early so i think i zone out due to sleepiness

Nice video is there anything u can do to zone out less cuz im Zoning out like 90% of the time and that is really shitty cuz it interupts alot of things in my day and im in my exam phase and i cant learn propperly cuz im Zoning out 24/7
just found out I have ADHD. :I tysm!
I have ADHD and this happens to me all the time
I zone out in class sometimes from BOREDOM
Thanks for the info Robert! Do you perhaps know more about derealization/depersonalization and would like to make a video about this topic? I’ve experienced this quite a lot, regularly, and quite intensely a year or two ago. At the moment it’s constantly like a 1 or 2 on a scale of 1-10, so it’s still there but not _that_ intense anymore.
I believe it is caused by the fact that I’ve had a stutter for my whole life, this had an enormous impact on my childhood. I’m thinking about going to therapy about it, can’t hurt right! :D
Take care!
Hey doc! When i starte zoning out i thought that there were problems with my eyes . So i went and told mom about it and shd took me to a doctor (an eye doctor ) and he told me in fact there was something and sent me to another doctor so that he fixes my eyes but he neer mentioned anytging about me having adhd or anything anf i always keep wondering why? Like is it not only people with adhd keep zoning out? Im really curious bout this and back then i didn't know that it's a sign of having adhd and I'm really confused
have you seen a neurologist ? Could be absent seizures
@@Nikki3b0oxX how can you tell the difference
When it happens while driving ugh dangerous
Adequate sleep as well?
I zoned out and burned my arm because I forgot I was holding a hot sheetpan and turned to open the oven with my other hand.

Me too. Having fatigue will also contribute to this. Your whole body is slow it feels like you catch on slower too

I find it concerning that everything is pointing me towards adhd and depressing

Thanks for sharing! There are so many different neurological issues that can make focus difficult. I’m glad you finally got some answers.
Thanks for posting this. I literally think this might be happening to me. Happens when I'm driving, working, even in the middle of a conversation.
