Great review! I appreciate the side by side break down. I used to play when i was growing up. Unfortunately hard times forced me into selling my guitar to play rent long ago. I've always been a massive Tool fan, so when the art series came out, it was an opportunity to relive some child hood memories and sound more like one of my favorite guitar players. I love this guitar and I'll never part with it. 🍻
It’s ironic that the Epiphone is way more accurate to Adam Jones’ actual Customs vs. the Gibson. One doesn’t sound better than the other here, just very slightly different. I’d say the Epi is a screaming deal vs. the Gibson for what you get and a much better buy.
I agree 100%, I've been a Tool fan for lots of years and have never seen AJ play a Standard. It's a cool guitar but putting his name on it doesn't make sense. Similar to the Jerry Cantrell Prophecy guitar. Cool guitar, but not even close to what he actually plays.
@@Zoso981and they didn’t even use a SD, I thought for sure the Epi would get the Gibson hb too then but no, WTH why would you short the Gibson then give the Epi that AND bursted neck and sides?
@justinhawks4458 you're right, I own the Epiphone Veil of Bees and I freaking love it. But I'm excited for a non-art version. My interest in Gibson is waning lately, there's just too many better deals out there.
I just bought the Epi on Monday, because I wanted a silverburst Custom I didn't need to sell a kidney to be able to afford. I love it, and it compares favorably to my Gibson Custom. The thing that sold me on it were the pickups, CTS pots, and Orange Drop capacitors.
Great video, this has helped me decide on getting the Epiphone model. It was not like the Gibson didn't sound great, because it did. But its kind of fells like whats the point of buying a signature model if its not as close as it can get to what it's suppose to mimic. Maybe later I will also get the Gibson lol, but for now the Epiphone is getting my money.
There's many reasons I wanted the Epiphone version when I heard they were being released. First off, the Frazetta "The Berserker" art model is the only one I'd ever want. Turns out I was offered one through Sweetwater, and just couldn't pass up the chance. It had some issues that needed sorting, but I'd planned on heavily modifying it anyhow. After swapping in the EMG 81/85 ZW set, I replaced the improperly installed nut with a TUSQ XL and finally replaced those p.o.s. tuners with a set of Gotoh keystones. It had marred bridge posts and a lose trussrod when I received it. Tightened the trussrod, and had Sweetwater make Gibson/Epiphone ship me new replacement bridge posts. It's now better than ANY original Norlin era silverburst custom that I've ever seen or heard of, and that's no bullshit! Wouldn't part with it for a penny less than 2k. The neck profile and playability is literally THEE BEST, of any guitar in my collection.
I haven't played either but I own an Epiphone Explorer once I changed the pickups it made a world of difference. I'd say the Adam Jones Epiphone Art series would be the way to go. Limited edition art, same pickup in the bridge that he uses, & silver burst on the back of the neck. I think this is a better looking guitar than the Gibson standard Adam Jones Les Paul.
Both guitars sounded great and very similar to each other, I enjoyed your playing on both of them. I have Gibson Les Paul's and Epiphone signature Les Paul guitars as well as having the AJ Artwork #3 and they all feel/play and sound excellent in my hands. You can't go wrong with either purchase. Sure, my Gibson Les Paul's feel just a little bit more substantial in my hands, but that higher quality feel is really minimal, and most people will not even feel the difference. I think only seasoned guitar players that have played many Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul guitars over the years could feel the difference now that Epiphone has stepped up there game.
It’s weird - the Gibson doesn’t have the bridge pickup the artist uses, nor his preferred neck profile, and isn’t the right kind of Les Paul. If anything you’d think the epiphone would be the one lacking artist features.
I gotta say... owning both of these guitars (my Epi is the Veil of Bees) they're BOTH great guitars! However, it is worth mentioning that Gibson did do 3 different Custom Shop runs of the LPC (which were much more accurate receeations of his '79). Limited and expensive as they were, they did do it. The Standard was never supposed to be a replica of his personal '79 LPC. It is somewhat of an odd bird, specs-wise, but it really is a great Les Paul Standard. That Gibson DC High Gain pickup in the bridge is a beast. Mimics the Seymour Duncan DDJ very well. It has a little less bite and is warmer sounding, but it's welcomed. The Epi is more specs-accurate, but had a Seymour Duncan DD in the bridge and that thing has BITE. The neck is more slim and it actually feels like a Norlin era LPC, mostly. If you're into the Tool thing, both of these fiddles will get the job done, just in slightly different ways. But, they are both pretty damn versatile as well.
@@frostyshake3314 Save yourself some money and get the Epiphone, definitely a fantastic Les Paul Custom that feel/plays great. And if you don't like something about it, change it like the person above did and make it your own still coming in at a lot less cost than Gibson. The only thing I did with mine, was change out the tuners to some locking Schaller's to keep the same look but get some locking tuners for easy quick string changes. I did get a professional setup done to mine, and that did make a difference for an added wow factor, it feels/plays so great. It felt great to begin with, but I wanted it to be as best as it can be, so I had the Luthier also do a fret dressing with the setup to make sure all frets are leveled with no sharp fret ends.
Nice review - I think the Epiphones are closer to the musician customs. I have both slash epiphone and gibson lespaul, they are both great but somehow I gravitate to the cheaper one...
Nice overview! Though I think some key details left out is that the Gibson has true MOP inlays with a mahogany neck and the Epiphone has a multi piece maple neck with a volute but the inlays aren’t true MOP. Epiphone also has a long neck tenon which I don’t believe the Gibson has and that’s a nice bonus for the Epi.
Adam’s 79 and many Norlins also had a maple neck. Went back to mahogany / no volute around 83 I think. The maple with the volute is supposed to be stronger to breaks but who’s gonna do that drop test lol
Personally I think a Silverburst AJ signature in a Standard model just doesn’t make any sense. Nothing against Standards at all. But a Silverburst AJ?? HAS to be a Custom
I get what your saying, but I bought one and the cost of the guitar being a Gibson aged silver burst with real pearl inlays and Gibson logo, and a beautiful dark ebony board and finally the neck volute. For the standard price vs custom shop it's a pretty good deal.
I own some Gibsons. But I bought this same Epiphone and find I can practice on it daily without worry of scratches or dings. The Gibsons I seem to just look at while playing the Epiphone. Am I correct in assuming the Gibson has those stupid raised nibs on the neck binding, while the Epiphone does not? Why does Gibson do this? I have returned two Gibson Flying V because the E string would catch between the raised nibs and the fret ends all the way up the neck. There is a world of difference in sound between the two guitars though.

After scoring one of 800 worldwide with the "The Berserker" custom art edition. I caught wind of the Customshop models coming out. My interpretation is the Gibson sounds more alive probably because of the finish, woods and electronics. Epiphone sounds kinda dull to me. This is my opinion so lets not make it a debate.
The answer is always the same. Buy what you can afford and enjoy. The Gibson, as usual, will hold its value. The eip, no so much. Both will serve their purpose fine.
I wish they'd die the ebony black, but otherwise both very cool guitars. The standard might be an odd duck, but I think that's what makes it stand out. They both sounded good to my ears, but that non-weight relieved standard sounded a little chonkier in a sweet way. I suspect that's due to the custom bridge pickup, which I've heard nothing but praise for. I get the whole "but it's not AJ!" argument, but let's face it a standard is a lot more accessible than a custom, though it's still quite expensive. I remember when I paid $1200 for my standard... the days when Gibson scoffed at players like AJ. Honestly never thought I'd see the day where he not only had a signature guitar, but 4 of them?, and was helping save Gibson's ass! Ha!
Great demo! There is a huge difference in tones between these 2 guitars. To me the Epiphone sounds a lot more like Tool, and it sounds generally better than the Gibson. It might be the Seymour Duncan pickup.

Gibson will always hold it's value, plus EPI's are no where near the quality of Gibson.
@sixslinger9951 My Epiphone Veil of Bees is a fantastic guitar. It arrived needing nothing more than minor adjustments. It's getting just as much play time as my two Gibsons. (A 2017 LP Classic and a 2019 LP Traditional) And as far as resale, nobody on Reverb is selling theirs at cost. They all tried marking them up to a ridiculous price.
Most negative reviews I've read are from people that don't even own one.
@@sixslinger9951 Ye man, it s black and white the difference. 1500 € is a joke for this brand, in my opinion. I d rather pay 2500€ for a gibson, and that is not gonna happen too. Guitars are overpriced.
Totally Agree. !
The measure of an instrument is the pleasure it brings the owner. I'll enjoy making my Epi sound better than your Gibson for less than half the cost. Resell value? Who cares, I keep my gear
I think someone else should dial in your amp tones, these sound terrible.
it would help more if you didn't play out of a fart machine
Nothing but distortion.
Made in China lol
So is your phone, tablet and TV
@@martinlahaie6012 They're made in Korea, pretty close though.
@@pgrove i think Korea is more close to Japan quality than China...my take
The Gibson sounds better to me. Not even close.
