I had the honor of training and filming with Coach Firas Zahabi, who has trained UFC fighters like GSP, Jon Jones, and Rory MacDonald. In this video we cover such topics as: how to stop freezing up in a fight, why shin bones break when a kick is blocked, and a slick sprawl variation to avoid a takedown attempt.

Indeed. As a more of a "traditionalist" martial artist, I don't like a lot of these MMA martial artists and coaches shooting off their mouths when they do not always know what they are talking about. Zahabi is a refreshing exception. He does not do Gracie-like ridiculous - often false - self promotions, slandering of other martial artists/martial arts, etc and just teaches.
John Locke actually he exsplains the advantages and disadvantaged every martial art you know nothing about him if you think he hates jujitsu he's actually what most MMA choaches are like your just projecting your own biases on people you never met.
He Trains Rory MC Donald and GSP grate martial artists.
The greatest teachers are the ones who remain students

Love this variation on the sprawl, and his laughing at the spar/freeze dilemma was the best defuser I can imagine. Who hasn't been terrified or exhausted or frozen with thinking in sparring? Laughing and going again is the best advice. Great start to the new year. Thanks!

Massive props and thanks to you for this video! Up until now, I've only ever watched Firas in the background of UFC/GSP specials (leading up to each of his fights) and never fully comprehended/appreciated his personal level of knowledge and training. After watching this, I see he really seems to know his stuff.

I watch all you videos but this answered sooo many things I've been coming across In my training about forgetting things when it's needed most and because I learn kickboxing defending takedowns is something we never come across but for real world situations I've been thinking about how to deal with take downs a lot and this has been great info for me thank you!

These guys are both such great teachers.
Best thing for "freezing up" for me was isolation sparring with limited power - I froze up too my first few sparring sessions, but then we were instructed to do bodywork with only light jabs to the head, than we added crosses, hooks and so on... it really helped, felt like each transition was smooth and I always had fun. once you've done bodywork and know it's not a big deal, having to defend against a jab here and there is rather fun an you have room for fuck ups and experimentation.
