  • After trying several different ways to remove a stuck, rusted hot water heater element, I finally was able to remove it. 💪💥
I tried all kinds of different things to loosen a seased, stuck hot water heater element.
By the way, I'm not a plumber but was told by my local plumbers supply store one way to use it.
Hope this helps you remove a stuck, rusted water heater element.
Let me know if this works for you.

I use that same exact impact and socket to work on my wrist watch and now time really flies!

I would've tried a breaker bar with a "cheater" on it first. The longer the better. But glad you got it out.

ok, what you mean 'cheater'? I tried a breaker bar but couldn't get enough bite or force to hold on to the element nut. Thanks for the feedback!

@@raddadprojects The same six point socket, with a breaker bar but slip a long pipe, maybe 3 feet or so over the breaker bar. The pipe is called a "cheater". It increases the leverage. Archimedes said "give me a lever long enough and I can move the world" (paraphrase)

nope. The only thing would be an impact wrench with the correctly sized socket. Same thing on the anode nut.

Yeah, we hauled out the breaker bar we keep in the trunk of the car, and we just couldn't get enough bite, the nut's profile is too low. You can try it, though...

@@raddadprojects Yep! Hahahah! By the way, I took your advice, and I also went to Harbor Freight, and got the next size or two down from "Big Daddy." Popped that (really aggravating) puppy right off! Thank heavens and this video! Of course, it turned out it was one or the other of the two thermostats, but that's okay, didn't hurt to change out the elements in any case, eh?

If you have an element cemented in calcium like that, you have worse problems than a stuck element...replace the heater. Simple. Here's another hint. USE an IMPACT wrench on the anode as well, but I bet the anode in that tank is rotted away as well.

Get you a whole house water filter and flush your water heater couple times a year to keep lime from buildup

    • @raddadprojects

I've considered the filter before. thanks for the suggestion!

That's not an "impact" type socket. Those chrome sockets can shatter. Hope that you were wearing eye protection.

      @raddadprojects  Месяц назад

That's a good point. Yeah, chrome wasn't the best way to go. Thanks for the feedback.

With that much buildup your going to get a shot life from the replacement, tank capacity's reduced and probably near the end of life. Better long term solution, replace the water heater and since your subject to sediment buildup perform routine flushing. On the positive your now the long term owner of some one time use tools.

Hit it on the corner with a cold chisel, it will turn. btw... no such thing as a hot water heater. Hot water doesn't need to be heated, just sayin...

@raddadprojects well I'm glad you got it out. The 1st rule of plumbing is you've got a 50/50 chance of what ever you put a wrench on will break off in your hand. LOL
