Impact Driver, 1 1/2 inch socket and Bye, Bye bad element. It wouldn't budge with hand tools. 3 day job done in an hour. Thanks.
My element was blown open as well.
Thanks for the Feedback Mr. Dovie! Glad it worked well for you!
U think Uvknow what Ur doin'? I danm well know you do!! Great, Great Tutorial!!! State of the art!!! Even i couldnt have done better (maybe). Nicely done, Data! Nicely done, indeed!! - Captain Picard🎉
What if your heating element in bent and it won't come out of the hole?
Larry, just force it out. It will bend because it’s probably old. Some of those heating elements have a U-turn at the end and once it bends a little bit, you’ll be able to finish the removal once it hits the U-turn and just lift up or down a little bit.
@@PompanoBrownie I have the u-turn elements but I can't force it out
Use a small hacksaw blade holder and cut it off. Just pull it out as far as you can first. Remaining portion will drop to bottom of tank. Heresy’s link to one on Amazon.

Or… just wrap some duct tape around a hacksaw blade at the end to hold it.
OK, I gotta ask.... Who the truck got in there and bent it. Please don't tell me I bent yours, too!!! That's six in 9 weeks! I'm not buyin' no one, any more! OK, send me your address. But you're the last, last one!!
This is the best of a dozen or so videos on this topic that I've reviewed. I just finished my water heater element replacement job and this video covers all the important points very effectively in a very organized fashion. Great job Pompano!
I’m glad I could help Marc, thank you. I think that being a handyman can be a blessing to save money. It also allows me to justify more tools. lol
Yeah, but know this about this guy! He's danm SHARP, imo! Even if you know the subject, he's just effin great to listen to, huh?

What if your element is already damaged from rust? And there may not be enough surface for the socket to grab....
If the nut is damaged from rust that bad on the outside you may have bigger problems like a leak in tank. It’s important to keep socket firmly seated with your weight when operating the impact wrench.
@@PompanoBrownie The rust in the damage is because the element itself is oozing from around the seal
This is on a solar water heater which runs 20 to 30° warmer than a conventional electric. We run upwards of a 160 to a 170° from the solar. So it doesn't surprise me if that seal on the element breaks down faster.
@@mikeeisele2428 sometimes with a nut that bad I’ve had luck using a cold chisel at an angle on one of the nut facets and hammering counter clockwise.
I used a hammer and chisel about an hour ago.
I didn't need my impact wrench, but I did use a 38mm impact socket and 24" breaker bar. Thanks for all the tips....kept this to about 3.5 hours (including travel time).
