  • Helloooo! 💜
I feel like i'm on a roll with reviewing affordable gouache paints! I've been looking for an affordable option to practice with when I don't want to use my expensive designer gouaches. I hope you enjoy this short review and my little door painting.
I'll try to come out with a more in depth review comparing Himi & Arteza gouache later because they're similar price points! Which is the better beginner gouache? What are your thoughts?
*Also - I purchased these paints, I am not endorsed by Arteza, this was not a gift. *
I just give my honest opinion and it's all subjective. 💕 Enjoy!

Wow, Elaine! I love this piece. I usually paint in watercolor, but I have these Arteza gouache paints and enjoyed watching you use them because I'm still a little stumped on how to paint with gouache. Watching you assures me that the quality of what I have is good enough (so that's not the problem) and makes it less intimidating to approach. One question I would love to see you answer in a gouache painting tutorial is when you're loading so much paint onto the brush, how do you still get thin lines? In switching from watercolor to gouache, I'm not sure how to get those lines and precision because it feels like my brush loses its point when its loaded with paint.

Hey Rachel! Thanks for such a thoughtful comment and question. I was so intimidated by gouache in the beginning and stuck with watercolor but I saw so many lovely opaque illustrations that I started practicing. There is definitely a learning curve from watercolor to gouache - when i first started i tried to use gouache like i used watercolor and then began to realize that gouache works differently. But i think as you learn it you will love it!
I've been wanting to do a video on just brushes and that is a great question i could answer! I wonder what type of bristles you are using and size brush? I know sable brushes are good with watercolor but they're too soft for gouache imo. I like using synthetic brushes because they are stiffer and keep shape better with gouache, the thin one i am using in this video is a round 1 princeton velvetouch. I also keep a paper towel on the side to dab away some moisture to keep my brushes loaded with a balanced ratio of paint/water. Explaining this through writing is harder than i thought! I will definitely try to cover this on video. But I do think you have to keep testing paint water ratio to give you the fine lines you're looking for because it is different from watercolor.

@@sarapasqualetto7425 Hey Sara, so long story short - personally i prefer the Arteza gouache over the Himi Jelly gouache. And as a your first gouache I think Arteza would be best because compared to my higher quality gouache this was the closest quality. There are more reasons why such as cross contamination ..but if you want to see my himi review it is here 😁:

I know that one trait of gouache is that it can be re-wet on the page, and that is not always good. Did you experience any of that while doing the wash around the door frame?

I hear the regular Gouache is good but not the Acrylic Gouache which seem to be more closer to craft paint than actual gouache

I don't know about the regular Arteza gouache but their acrylic gouache is AWFUL. I just got finished trying to use it and I could not get coverage after 4 layers. It doesn't layer, it doesn't blend well once laid down and it is too opaque to be acrylic wash and too light to be a gouache. Literally ONE layer of Holbein acrylic gouache covered better than 4 layers of Arteza. NOT worth it at all. I can't return it, I am using it to tint gesso and that is all I have liked about it.

Yikes! I haven't tried their acrylic gouache - now i don't plan on buying it. I also have the holbein acryla gouache and love it as well. Haha sometimes tho i wish price didn't reflect on quality XD Art supplies are so expensive!
