    i bought the 24 set and put honey in the paint to keep it from cracking. It also made it easier to rewet.

      Hello, I know this was three years ago but I thought I'd ask how it was going after all this time. I was wanting to put some of my Arteza gouache in a custom pallette and wanted some info on how well they rewet. Honey is a great idea but I'd like to know how it reacted to the gouache as I've only ever used it in watercolor.

    I really love the Arteza gouache. My mom surprised me with the set of 24 for Christmas last year when I didn't even tell her I wanted it in the first place. And just recently the set of 60 went on a lightning deal for $30, so we went ahead and got it on the grounds I don't actually get it till my bday in November. The wait is going to be killer! LOL.

    Hi Lindsay. Greetings from the UK and many thanks for yet another wonderful video. I have been contemplating Arteza gouache paint (Heavens above, not MORE colour pleads my poor long suffering OH!!) and am most grateful for your help in my decision making. The time, trouble and professionalism you bring to your channel and your review-honesty is very much appreciated and, when you say "Buy", I know I can do so with full confidence in the product. You should be declared a world-wide treasure young lady! Thank you for everything you do to inspire, encourage and educate....I am truly grateful. With warm regards and very best wishes, Marion in the UK.

    Thank you for this review! I love all of the products I have purchased from Arteza so far. I have been wondering about the gouache for a while. I definitely would want the metallics, so the 60 set is probably my best bet. Some of those colors are gorgeous. And those food illustrations....so beautiful!!! I think I need to paint some food. 😊 Thanks again. I love your reviews!!

    Thank you Lindsay. I really enjoy your reviews and painting videos. I've been using the 24 set for a bit now and really enjoy them. I have some WN gouache as well and find some of the color comparable, especially if I'm working on a piece I know I'm going to scan. The opacity is really good in this brand. I'm so so curious about how/who makes their paint formulations/manufacturing. Very interesting. Agree with you, not a huge fan of the watercolors. It's hard for me to compare them to my beloved MGraham. But, I really think the gouache is nice and the watercolors are even good for papercrafting projects. Hadn't tried their paper line yet and I see they have new sketchbooks. Interesting! Thank you for sharing. I so enjoy your work.

    Lindsay, Thank you so much for doing this review. I have been wanting to try my hand with gwash. And have been considering the Arteza. I am limited with funds but still did not want bad paint either. I have been checking some other reviews on them as well. It seems most everyone seems to like the Arteza gwash. But your opinion when it comes to paint, means a lot. So very happy you did this. You art looked so great by the way. By the way, I bought the Pretty Excellent watercolors after your review. I do like them. They are great for there price. TFS

    I agree soooo much about the gouache being a better watercolor than the watercolor. After a long time of refusing to buy anything Arteza, because there just happens to be something about this company that I do not fully like or trust, I saw both the gouache and the watercolor on sale. First I found the 24 set of gouache for 12Euros, so I figured that this is my chance to try it out without regretting it too much afterwards if I don't like it. I tried it, and I must say that I was/am quite happy with it. Obviously there are much better gouches out there, but for this price (the regular price here is 19 Euros for 24 and 44 Euros for 60) I don't think that you'll have an easy time finding something truly better. So after I had this good experience with their gouache, I figured I should also finally give their watercolors a try, and when I saw them on sale for 19 Euros for the tin of 36, I went ahead and got them and I was not really impressed. I would never call them bad paints, because they are not, I have already had quite a bit of fun with them and I think that they are wonderful for mixed media and pretty good for illustrations, but I surely would never recommend them to anyone looking for regular watercolors. Yes, the gouache is more watercolor-ish than the watercolors, for sure. At the same time, the watercolors remind me a bit of watered down gouache, which is why I think they are a nice choice for illustrations. I find that using the gouache and the watercolors together is really good, too, they work great together, and this is how I am going to be using them, since I have them both. But if I had to make a buying choice again, with the knowledge that I have now, I would definitely only get the gouache. I know that I will rebuy the gouche, I might even go ahead and get the metallic set or the box of 60, but even though I do not regret getting the watercolors (I mean, come on, for 19 Euros they were a steal) I would not choose to buy them again because they simply cannot do anything that the gouache can't.

  • @luciferfaust
    @luciferfaust 5 лет назад +8

    I like their metallics a lot but their own 12 set isn't worth it to me. It's just mica. I was sad to see that after I bought them. But I think the 60 set is a good value though.

    • @noellecurtisart
      @noellecurtisart 5 лет назад +3

      hellanistpunk I’ve tried this a couple times for some mistakes, and it works well since it won’t mess with the color scheme of your piece. It is important to note that gouache and watercolor have a different sheen, so at certain angles you can see the matte gouache stand out against the less-matte watercolor areas. If the gouache is minimal you might not notice though 😊

    Is there a gouache that is more watercolor and another that is more acrylic?? In other words, what is the difference between the Arteza Gouache and the Turner "Acrylic" Gouache?? Or is it just a misleading title?? Thank you so much for all you share!!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 года назад +1

      No, it's not misleading. The turned acrylic gouache (or any a acrylic gouache) is simply a matte acrylic paint do you cang rework it when dry. Regular gouache like arteza (also called designers gouache) is simply an opaque watercolor. You can reset it after it is dry and rework ig or use dried paint on your palette as it dosnt go to waste like acrylic gouache would. Both have their uses.

      the ratings on this gouache are high but I'd probably turn to Schminke Horadam gouache if lightfastness was my #1 concern. Steve Mitchel from the RUclips channel The Mind of Watercolor just did a comparison of high end gouache I recommend you check out that video as he has a lot of lightfast info on that one and color recommendations.

    Thanks for this great and thorough review. I was thinking about getting the Arteza Gouache paints but wasn't sure if they are worth it, since their watercolors are crap imo. But now I'll definitely give them a try.
    Also, the chicken at 17:24 looks more like a hawk than a chicken (the beak is curved too much downwards at the end), lol. Or is it meant to be a chicken/hawk hybrid? ;P

    5:03 A swatch over a black line on white paper, is NOT comparable to a swatch on all black paper: the black line showing through comes not just from the fact it is black, but that there is contrast with it and the white paper.

    Since gouache crumbles so much when squeezed out, is it okay to use from the tube or does that dry the tube out, as well? I had one set of gouache and dropped them. They shattered and mixed into such tiny particles, I threw them away. I thought I entered this comment today but didn't. Maybe someone watching can answer my question.

    • @ariweaver1543
      @ariweaver1543 5 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure if this is the answer you're looking for, but the most common way I see gouache used is by squirting small amounts fresh from the tube onto a mixing surface, recapping the tubes, and then continuing to add more fresh to the mixing surface when the painter runs out. I'm pretty new to gouache personally, so I can't speak with significant personal authority, but this is the technique I've been using, due to its prevalence, and it's been working for me, so far. Best of luck to you! :)

      @@cassiescreations9828 Ah, but M Graham is somewhat unique in the water-based paint world. They use a significant quantity of honey in their watercolors and gouache, which keeps their paints consistently much more moist than other brands. This can be a great thing, but it means your experiences with M Graham are going to be fairly unique, whether or not that works for you. ^^

      @@cherryshrimp4120 Yes it does, 150 GSM as Lyndsey was showing is about the thickness of 2 pieces of cheap copy paper stuck together. A lot of watercolour paper is 300gsm which is cardstock thickness. Hope that helps.

      @Cherry Shrimp
      No, the weight of paper is just one of several factors and quality also depends on what you expect from your paper and what you plan to use it for. A Paper that will damage nearly all brush pens because of its surface is probably perfect for pastels or pencils, maybe even for watercolor.
      There is a bit more to paper and it's quality. You need to know what you expect from your paper and then go and look up the factors that are important for this and what happens if one of it changes. (paper material, size, surface texture/smoothness, thickness, waterresistant or not, hot or cold pressed....)
      A heavier paper is not necessarily thicker, that is a fallacy. It depends on a few factors i.e. the type of paper you have - is it made out of wood or out of cotton - these materials have different weights and a cotton paper will be thinner but not have less quality. My 60gsm paper is thicker than my 80gsm paper, that I use for lettering. For watercolor paper you can use the gsm to get a good guess in what range this paper might be, in terms of thickness, a 200gsm paper will be thinner as one with 450gsm. But 250gsm vs 300gsm could be nearly no difference in thickness, but has an effect of how much water it can take etc.

    how does adding glycerin or honey affect the permanence of the paint?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад

      It shouldn't unless you added so much if thinned the paint a lot. A thinner wash of color is less permanent than a mass tone application. I would recommend m Graham or achminke gouache with high lightfast ratings is permanence is a concern over a budget brand tho.
