    The idea with the B-1R was to use it as a supporting, long-range missile truck. Data link in, use an AWACS and the F-22/-35s to spot targets. Then, the B-1R would lob in LRAAMs while the AWACS/F-22/-35s designate for terminal guidance. The B-1R would also have an upgraded A-A radar and could, in a pinch, serve as an AWACS itself. Another point, not only was the B-1R considered with an internal payload, but also with external pylons. I think total missile count would potentially top 40+ AMRAAM-D/LRAAMs. With ripple fire. A stupid amount of firepower.

      I was wondering about that. I recall watching a show on the History channel when I was a kid (think it was a special episode of Dogfights) where F-22s provided the B-1R with continuous guidance data via the data link so the B-1R could fire while being well out of harm's way.
      I think it was also stated that the B-1R probably wouldn't be made with too much regard given to stealth, making it a must for a stealth aircraft to provide guidance in some way.

I was like just load up a big fast bomber, with all the 120’s at the time…go let stealthy boy find and track targets, relay it back, then have them unload…and I was like which one? Oh yeah, the Bone, as it’s the only bomber we have that can kinda keep up with F-22’s, and be in close enough range to be of use plus it’s low observation upgrades it got awhile back.

    Interesting test! The current Radar Absorbing Material (RAM) used on the F-22 starts to degrade ~M1.5, however when the ceramic RAM that's in development is finally put to use that will significantly lower maintenance costs as well as the speed range of the aircraft using it. Consider that ceramic RAM could possibly be used on the B-1 as well, making it more stealthy than it is now. It's a very interesting concept although upgrading the fleet of B-1B's with modern avionics and engines would no doubt be a very costly program. It's highly debatable whether that option would be more cost effective in the long term than building a completely new design optimized for the role.
    The concept is very interesting because an aircraft the size of a B-1 equipped with modern avionics would have the internal space for drone operators. UAVs that could potentially replace the role of the F-22, or otherwise form a package with capabilities complementing the B-1 in terms of sensors, EW and SEAD or to carry AG ordnance.

    • @stupidburp

      I think new build aircraft with an updated B-1 design with similar but improved capabilities would be best. A couple of current B-1 could be used as engineering test platforms for new components. The USAF has put the B-1B to heavy and frequent use over the last few decades. Quietly has been the most used bomber in inventory by far. Only reason why some in USAF neg on it is because it had nuclear weapons fusing capabilities removed for treaty compliance - a treaty about to expire. Even the maintenance record has improved, making it about equally available and costly to run as B-52. An updated design with modern modular avionics could be considerably easier to maintain.
      Would be a great complement to B-21 for the USAF. Also a great export opportunity to provide to allies.

  • @Gabriel_McMillan

    Regarding the problem with the Mig-31s in the last mission... The solution is to put a speed governor on the B-1R. You have him slow down to where the F-22s can keep up, and you keep the F-22s way out ahead, 50 miles ahead of him, to ambush the Mig-31s, before they know what hit them, when they thought they were going to intercept a lone B-One R! That ought to do it.
    Ideally, the F-22s would bushwack the Mig-31s, before the Mig-31s get close enough to fire on the B1R, and while the Mig-31s are going defensive, the B1R can provide long-range fire support, to essentially double the number of munitions the F-22s have to launch at the enemy, and with much less risk of losing the B1R.

    I love a good boner video!
    The B-21 Raider is set to be officially unveiled shortly and should be able to fulfill a similar role as this: effectively a 5th-gen stealth bomber that is capable of launching both traditional air-to-air missiles (AIM-120 and AIM-260) and upcoming hypersonic missiles, in addition to the more standardized loadout of precision bombs and cruise missiles.
    They're buying at least 101 units (potentially more) to effectively replace the B-1B and B-2 airframes. However, those B-1B and B-2 airframes will be going to the boneyard to be placed into long-term storage just in case there's a rainy day and the US needs a bunch more bombers to be activated. I just get this nice and warm-fuzzy feeling whenever the US military is capable of placing such amazingly effective military equipment into their long-term reserves. Essentially, the US could raid their inventory of reserve stockpiles spread throughout the globe on friendly territories and on cargo ships throughout the world and activate the major hardware (tanks, IFVs, APCs, MRAPS, attack/transports/utility helicopters, ships, and all varieties of aircraft including AWACs/EW/ECM/ISR/tankers/fighters/bombers/attack/drones, Humvees, small arms, transport equipment, etc.) and remain within the top-5 militaries by size and capability worldwide.

    • @stupidburp

      It is equally capable at high altitude. Has a very high flight ceiling. When used to shoot long range missiles, a high altitude run makes more sense. I'm suprised nobody has put something like a torpedo launch tube on a plane since they're so worried about stealth. The radar profile when it was opened would only be the diameter of the missile. There might be a weight issue but that's something that can be solved by shaving weight vs having to invent new tech or materials.

    • @stupidburp
      @stupidburp Год назад +2

      It was originally designed for supersonic bomb runs in the B-1A configuration. B-1B operates much slower primarily because of engine intake modifications optimized for stealth instead of speed. Swap in fast intakes again and it can indeed perform supersonic missile launch runs at Mach 2.

    • @uummmnocoolnames
      @uummmnocoolnames Год назад

      @@readhistory2023 Problem with that is you'd either need the rocket motor to ignite to launch it out of the tube - which means you're basically turning the weapons bay, and by extension, the interior of the plane, into the chamber of a gun as you're confining that explosive thrust in an enclosed space - or you'd have to pneumatically or electromagnetically launch the missile down the tube - which sounds simple, but then you consider you have to build a system powerful enough to launch a twelve foot long, 350+ lbs missile forward hard enough and fast enough that it achieves enough separation from the aircraft that it doesn't damage the plane when the motor kicks on, or strike the plane if it happens to be maneuvering during launch, and then you start looking at a system that is significantly heavier and more prone to failure than a pair of doors that open and shut really quickly.

    wake turbulence starts off moving around the wingtip in a circle, goign downwards under the wing, upwards outside th wingtips, inwards above hte wingtips and outwards underneath them
    it spreads out from there
    so if you fly right behind a plane the wake turbulene puhes yo udown but if you fly in a v formation it pushes you up
    basically since te air around you is moving upwards you can maintain altitudeb ut stil lfly at a downwars slope relative to the air around you - so you cna save fuel by flying ina v formation but you need more fuel i you fly right behind each other
    meanwhile, cars don't really care much about air moving up or down slightly, however by conservation of momentum, having drag means dragging some air along with you so driving right behind another car gives you ab it of a tailwind meaning you move slwoer relative to hte air around you and experience less drag

    Re-implement (approve) the previously canceled, AGM-131 SRAM II project because the Chinese and North Koreans need love too. Tie an approved, new B-1R production run to the B-21 program to "pave the roads" ahead of the B-21s etc. Think HARM missile with a 200 KT yield and a 400 km range. Build a new run of B1-B bombers, with updated engines, electronics, and 25mm defensive, rear canon, laser canon to dazzle/destroy enemy missiles, and rear-facing missiles for chasing fighters on the bomber's 6-o'clock pos.

    B-1B's ceiling is 60,000 Ft. Crew of 4. And this was played out on Air Power I think as B-1B's as Missile Trucks. Fighting 4th/5th Gen China/Russia aircraft. If you had Kc-135 to refuel and a AWACS in this... It would be just like the TV show.. Now I'm going to look for the show on Discovery +

      B-2 carry capacity is just slightly less than B-1B. But I think a better conversion for B-2 would be to turn them into fuelers. Stealthy fuelers could provide sips to F-35 and B-21 close to hostile areas.

    If they go this direction (likely not given how expensive the B1 is to maintain) they can/should equip it with the LREW (Long Range Engagement Weapon) which is going to be a massive air launched AAM. My guess is that it will be significantly larger than an AIM 260/ AIM-120 but could prpbably still fit in the internal bays of a B-1/B-52/B-21.
    This would make it ideal to use older bombers as massvie missile trucks with mega long range AAMs data linked all the way to their targets from 150+ miles away. This keeps the launch platform safe and the enemy in lots of danger.

    • @stupidburp
      @stupidburp Год назад +1

      Maintenance cost is currently about the same as B-52. With a new variant with modern modular avionics, it might even be cheaper to maintain.

  • @charlietheunicorn5383

    Nice proof of concept. I would anticipate a strike package to have a dedicated jamming aircraft, AWAC and a fighter screen 100 miles in front of the "B1R". They can be called the condom. What I didn't anticipate was how fast the aircraft was or how hard it was to keep up with it with modern 21st century aircraft. Note: For each aircraft splashed, roughly $50M.... each missile cost $1M.
    I recall sometime in the 1990s they had considered doing something similar (anti air) with the B52s. The Pentagon ended up turning them into cruise missile trucks instead.

    In the 1992 book, The sixth Battle, B1B's are used as missile trucks against several TU22 & 16's regiments off the east coast of Africa, that are targeting a US Carrier Group, that is supporting South Africa, from a Russian/African invasion.
    Apparently, the B1B has the same A/A radar as a F16A.
    The book itself is worth a read.

    Thinking of how a B-1R might be employed, I think about Red Storm Rising where fleets of Soviet bombers would go after convoys in the Atlantic. Put a few B-1Rs out there to intercept the enemy bombers. The B-1R would have the range to cover the whole north atlantic and the speed to chase the Soviet bombers right out of the hemisphere

    • @mikejulien2330

      That or, since it has larger crew very high speed and long loiter time/range, could act as a quick response for front line fighters that get jumped by enemy planes for a larger region than a CAP fighter I would assume.
