  • Shred Guitar In The 80s! In the episode I look at the incredible playing of Warren DeMartini of Ratt and break down some of his ideas and licks he used in the 1980s on albums such a Out of the Cellar, Invasion of you Privacy and Dancing Undercover. This is the first in a series on Warren's playing. I also take a look at the book Eddie Van Halen by photographer Neil Zlozower which is an incredible photo history of Edward Van Halen with Van Halen.

      Totally.. Warren stole the “George Lynch Vibrato” lol… but Warren helped him a lot learning some cover songs when George was trying out for I forget which band…

    • @DiMarzio-Tone
      @DiMarzio-Tone 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@colinsexton1929Lol 😅, George actually got all kinds of tips from Warren on how to break things up and make a quick decision that matters, like George said, "I just wasn't really into coverage for different types of styles and Warren helped me out big time" and learned how to do things your saying except backwards. But of course both just play different, I think Warren is actually technically better, but George is awesome with his own style.

    • @Ezekiel336
      @Ezekiel336 6 месяцев назад

      Ya I just remember reading a George Lynch interview in Guitar Magazine back in like 1987 and George was asked about Warren using his vibrato and George said "He ripped me off that f***" lol@@DiMarzio-Tone

      You try copying George’s vibrato...lol George’s vibrato is the stuff of legend. Arguably his greatest gift or blessing that truly distinguished him, was Lynch’s wide smooth and natural vibrato that caught the attention of many great players and tons of fans.

    Excellent dude! I owned a Kramer just like that! Brings me back to the 80s. Yes, Warren has so much style. His phrasing puts him heads and shoulders above most players. His nickname is Torch. One thing I wanted to mention about Cellar is that the jump in production quality between the EP and Cellar is just tremendous. Cellar is still a pretty great sounding album. All of Warren's leaders were done with a Rivera era 18 watt Super Champ through an Orange cab with an EV. The rhythms were all both Warren and Robin through a boosted plexi. They used this same amp on Invasion, along with a Laney or two. I think the leads were all Laney. Dancing was mostly a Soldano SLO. Warren did use metal picks and gauge 10 Ernie Balls. He stopped using the metal picksu when he kept breaking the wound strings, A in particular, by the second or third song.

Lay It Down, Give It All and Between the Eyes from Invasion, Body Talk, Take A Chance and 7th Avenue from Dancing Undercover, What's It Gonna Be and What I'm After from Reach for the Sky. Of course, Im Insane, Back for More, In Your Direction and Youre in Trouble from Cellar are just great ripping and tasty solos. And I could go on. Listen to the fade out of Dangerous But Worth the Risk from Invasion. Just cool youthful angst and stretchin out of his playing.

    Bill check out a Jazz monster named Larry Meyer out of Huntington Long Island in New York. I've seen all the greats. This cat is possibly the greatest Jazz improv player I've ever seen or heard. Some of the videos on here don't do his playing justice. His live performances are as incredible as Yngwie, EVH, Dimeola or anyone I've seen. His style is much different than most but it's mind boggling. Check him out. Larry Meyer. Specializes in Charlie Parker and guts like that. But he is a huge EVH fan. He told me that Hot For Teacher is absolutely as jamming as any of the best Jazz he's ever heard. He also said Edward Van Halen is the best rythym player he's ever heard.

      @Joe Walker George has said that Warren was often hanging around in a music store, listening, pretending to shop, while George gave lessons. Might be true, but George and Ed were known to tell a tall tale or two.

    Hey Bill. I found a video of one of warrens solos. I was wondering you possibly do a video about it, I have no idea what he's doing.

      Hello, Matt! That is an awesome solo... I have heard that one before but it's been a long time. Warren played some amazing licks on that first tour! I'm in the middle of a couple things at the moment getting ready for some other videos and doing a little recording, but when I get through with this stuff I'll give it a listen and pick out a few of those runs! I recognized some of them from listening just now, I have to figure out what positions and notes he is using. Thanks for the suggestion... I love Warren's playing! ☺️

      Hello! Thanks so much for inquiring! Yes, I do some online teaching... but at the moment I'm so busy and booked up that really don't have any time available. I cut back my student load quite a bit while working on a bunch of projects. I really appreciate your asking though and thanks so much for watching my channel here! ☺️

    I hate how the guitar is put on the back burner these days, the 80's was so great for guitar solo's, this older music rules

    Does Warren have some Jazz and Funk influences in his sound? Or is it false?

    I noticed guitarist on RUclips who cover Warren's solos, and have no problem playing neo-classical style licks, tend to struggle with his solos for some reason. I think it has to do with Warren's timing or internal metronome. He attacks and pulls back from notes in an off beat way, if that makes any sense and this timing throws guitarists off. I'm probably not making sense here. Anyway, no one plays like him.
