One of my very first concerts when in my teens……Boston. Ticket price was $9.00. I’m 69 yrs old now and Tom Scholtz is one of my guitar idols! Always loved the Boston guitar sounds. Pete, your reviews and channel are absolutely phenomenal. I had the little brother of the Rockman 100, “The Soloist” back in the day. Looks like I’ll be picking up the new MXR Rockman 100 pedal. Thank you for your demo!! I appreciate your talent and showmanship.
some guys do demos of a certain pedal and it makes you turn off the video and swear you'll never buy that piece of s**t. When Pete demos a piece of gear, it makes you want to buy it. Nice job Pete. You're not just a great guitarist, but a cool dude.
I was in my teens in the 1980s' and I never cared for this type of processed sound, particularly the over used chorus sounds of the era. But I'm just over a minute into this video and Pete has got this new pedal sounding very appealing. I suppose that's why so many gear makers seek him out to do such demos as this. Good job to our host. ✔

Hey Pete, interesting demo for me anyway. I'm 72 now, and back in the day a good friend of mine was the sole UK distributor for the Sholtz range. I had an audio repair business at the time and he asked me to be the service agent for these things. It was a nightmare. Sholtz was/is a genius, but was so paranoid that he would not supply any schematics or service information in case people tried to copy it. There were production modifications made to the X100 circuits all the time, so there were subtle differences between units. I had to buy an X100, which I still have, so that I had something to compare. A lot of guitarists were using them for live performances meaning that I had to turn the repairs round same day in some cases, this lead to extreme pressure at times. Only good thing was that all the parts needed for the repairs were supplied by Sholtz FOC. Consequently, interesting though it was, I had to give the arrangement up after a few months as I could not turn them round fast enough without sacrificing my main business. I can understand why some are saying what they are, the sound is very much "of the time", but at that time, there was nothing quite like it.
There’s a lot of audio and effects and amp companies that won’t give or sell you a schematic for their products. Blackstar amps comes to mind immediately…
Two tricks that will work well in a lot of contexts. This will be great for overdubbing lead parts and harmony parts or recording in parallel with a traditional guitar amp.

I played a song using the CLN2 setting and afterwards, the engineer came up to me and said “that’s the best acoustic sound I’ve ever heard coming out of an electric guitar, ever!” Never forgot that … good times.
Pete Thorn is one of the few absolute masters of electrified wire and wood! I have so much respect for his opinion on gear and music. Thanks for sharing sir👍👑
Man, that brings me back... Boston's first album is one of my holy trinity of debut albums, along with The Cars and VH1. The Rockman sound is also all over my own first album, as I had a full-on Rockman rig back then... the Sustainor, Distortion Generator, Echo and Octopus along with the MIDI foot controller. Good times.
I wonder why they didn't give us the echo. It was a very simple echo that wasn't adjustable, it was just on or off. That would have totally completed the sound. WHen I tried one of the original Rockman units in a music store (Sam Ash on 48th St NYC) in the early 80's I bought it immediately! It sounded SO COOL though those crappy little headphones that came with it. There really was nothing like it at the time as far as I remember. (I think the Zoom came a little later) I have the Japanese stompbox that camne out a few years ago that also emulates these tones. It has even fewer features but it has the distorted tones right. This MXR gives us a little more with the chorus, the clean sounds and stereo option (as well as the input drive slider) so I'll probably buy it. THanks Pete! And congrats on the Satch Vai gig! Have a great time!
@@philfrank5601 I heard someone else in another demo mention that the reason was that they couldn't source (find) the original chip for the echo. Seems kinda weird to me, but I guess that could be true?
Dude, your voice is AMAZING! Your tone and you are so well spoken is totally insane. You could give the great professional speakers/announcers a run for their money. Oh, and your guitar playing is top-notch kick a$$ too!!! Man, I wish I could speak and sound like you do.
I got myself the originals (halfsize rack distortion and chorus), and I don’t regret it a minute! Esp. that chorus still sounds insanely good (owning a classic TC1210, too). I like the idea that MXR rereleased this thing, so it becomes widely affordable again.
That harmonized melody in the outro is killer! So is the riff underneath it, very cool! I have one on order along w/the switching pedal. I was too young and missed the first Rockman bus, so thank you for another chance, Dunlop! 🙏

I bought the rack mount Sustainer and Echo back in the 80's and the rack for it. Still have it to this day. Only copy song on my original music channel is " Hitch A Ride " off of Bostons first album. Always great hearing the Boston songs still ! MXR made a great copy of the X100 ! Had the battery original version when they came out back then before the Rack Modules. These will probably work very well recording or live with acoustic guitars using the clean 1 or 2 settings. I did that live. Also if you buy two and use a A/B/C pedal, you can keep one on clean and the other on edge or distortion and easily switch between them using the A/B. And with C you can combine the two together for a great sound. But many people commented on my great acoustic live tone. Was the X100!
I had one back in the late 80's and have missed it so much. While they are still available used there was no way I was paying the asking price for them. Best demo of this pedal. I guess it will mostly attract people that grew up hearing that sound back in the days on various records. There are two types of Pete Thorn videos: GREAT ones and REALLY GREAT ones. Pete, you make everything sound great, you record and mix multiple parts using the unit you are demoing, and you give real-world applications for the device. And there is not a bit of cork-sniffing to be found anywhere. GREAT job as always.
Great Video Pete. I had the rack mount version back in the early 80's. I ran it in stereo through an EV stereo Amp into custom made full range speakers.
Scholtz is a Genius! he is also a double EE in electrical engineering. So that helps! Saw ZZTop warm up Boston, back in 79 at Cobo Hall. Gibbons was awesome as usual, but I remember just how Wide and incredible the Boston sound was. They were SO tight as a band, The songs were just mind blowing. Was also one of my fist LP records! Pretty sure I destroyed my Dad's stereo system with the first Boston Album. Thx for sharing. Look forward to seeing you with the Boys on tour!
For some reason I never really associate Boston / Tom Scholz with the 80’s . . The debut came out in ‘76 and I just stay there lol Thats an excellent Les Paul . . Didn’t quite catch the mdl you called it though 😊
The distortion tones are probably "close enough" but the clean does not match that Rockman clean tone. The Rockman has more of a bright shimmering clarity to it. Nothing comes close. I bought the first one when it came out and finally trashed it only a a few years ago when I couldn't get it to power on any more. Plug in the original Rockman and toggle back and forth, you'll hear the difference. Rockman through a stereo power amp and stereo speakers. I loved it. (Love for Pete too!)
Love it! Gongrats on the forthcoming tour! Please visit Helsinki if possible. Now Joe could do really his 1987 sounds with this unit. I remember seeing the Rockman strereo combo amp XP100 in a music store in Helsinki, about 1991. Man that sounded awesome but was really expensive for me.
Hey Pete....killer demo.!!!!!!! It's almost like a little ada mini rack. Love all your demos you do help us find the stuff we seek for sonic happyness!!!!
those sounds brough back some memories! i didnt own one of those as a kid, but definetly wanted one! a couple of years back a guy came into my studio with the bass version of it it was awesome!
I still have my old soloist I bought new in the 80”s but the batteries (eight AA) leaked and I haven’t been able to get it working again yet. Looks like I’m picking one of these up for sure. PS I was lucky enough to See Boston at the Meadowlands on the Third Stage tour in ‘87. Great Memories. Great video.
You nailed it. The original modelling gear. Essentially took his sound with all of it's insanity of how he got there in a small analog solid state package.
Cool. This just reminded me that I still have my X100 somewhere. Time to pull it out. Boston was the first concert I attended. It was at Brooklyn college in '78 and saw Pete with the CRS last April in New Jersey. Great show.
This is a nice presentation you did. I got the Rockman Soloist in the summer of 1986, it did wonders for my guitar tones, as well as being the first world-class headphone amp, it sounded great, & I got an amazing amount of playing time on it over the years. I would use it as a pre-amp on my rig at the time & dial in a heavier tone, but it still had that well defined Scholz sound, it rocked! I might have to get this new one since I don't have my old Soloist anymore. 👍
Congrats on the SatchVai band thing Pete, so awesome to hear about that!!
Amen.
Pete is a great addition. Both Vai and Joe had glowing things to say.

😊 it's really fun to see a picture of Pete at age12 or13 Pete you haven't changed a bit!!
Yeah, his production level for demo videos is incredible
Great Video Pete. I had the rack mount version back in the early 80's. I ran it in stereo through an EV stereo Amp into custom made full range speakers.
More than a feeling 🎉
Scholtz is a Genius! he is also a double EE in electrical engineering. So that helps! Saw ZZTop warm up Boston, back in 79 at Cobo Hall. Gibbons was awesome as usual, but I remember just how Wide and incredible the Boston sound was. They were SO tight as a band, The songs were just mind blowing. Was also one of my fist LP records! Pretty sure I destroyed my Dad's stereo system with the first Boston Album. Thx for sharing. Look forward to seeing you with the Boys on tour!
For some reason I never really associate Boston / Tom Scholz with the 80’s . . The debut came out in ‘76 and I just stay there lol
Thats an excellent Les Paul . . Didn’t quite catch the mdl you called it though 😊
I just stumbled on this …. So fun . What a nice guy - having a good time here
THE 80s ARE BACK BABYYYYYY!!!!!!😮💨🔥🔥🔥
Pete is just the coolest. What a great demo, as always.
Jeezus Pete, way to sell something that I never knew I wanted. This is how all demos should be done.
Wonder how it sounds into a clean amp
The entire ZZ Top album "Afterburner" was made using a Rockman unit.
You have totally went off the deep end. Best cover I've heard of this ..we're ready. 2thumbs up killer.
Incredible tones and playing, Pete!
I had never noticed how much the rockman sounds like brian may's tone lol
Treble/mid boost😎
Especially on Tie your Mother Down.
Yes
The is the most enthusiastic, PT gear review I've seen. You're clearly tickled pink about this pedal! Great review! Tom Scholz is a genius.
Dancing with the copyright Devil on an LA Highway.
I love when pete has a guitar in his hand plays like a boss as usual 👍🏻💪🏻
Love the vocals, Pete! The Rockman sound is so cool and iconic... and yeah... Third Stage is basically a masterpiece.
Wow!
That sounds great!
..had one back in the day, and it sure brings back some memories!
Hey Pete....killer demo.!!!!!!! It's almost like a little ada mini rack. Love all your demos you do help us find the stuff we seek for sonic happyness!!!!
Oh my!
I had 1st Generation and it was such a tonal game changer…
Nice axe and tone!
Super talented guitarist! I like the sounds of this lil box
That Black Suhr!!!😮 NOBODY demo’s as good as Pete!!
You’re so excited hearing the Rockman sound of our childhoods you can’t help but smile and sing!😂🤘
those sounds brough back some memories! i didnt own one of those as a kid, but definetly wanted one! a couple of years back a guy came into my studio with the bass version of it it was awesome!
Cheers to rockin the classic ACDC look, Pete. Malcolm Young is smiling down on you 🤘
You nailed it. The original modelling gear. Essentially took his sound with all of it's insanity of how he got there in a small analog solid state package.
That sounds so awesome Pete. Great playing and tone.
I still have my Rockman X100 that I bought in the early 80’s. I would like to buy this MXR X100 Rockman, as well. Sound great. 🎸🤘🏼👍🏻
Cool. This just reminded me that I still have my X100 somewhere. Time to pull it out. Boston was the first concert I attended. It was at Brooklyn college in '78 and saw Pete with the CRS last April in New Jersey. Great show.
I learned to play on the old Rockman and this sounds amazingly like it. So cool and I will be looking for one asap. great video..
Congrats on amazing news bro ! You rock!
