Was lacking courage to stitch the top of back & front of a drop shoulders sweater. So I visited Melbourne’s best knitting shop Wondoflex, and was told to check out your blog. If they recommend you, it’s with very good reason!
Thankyou for your amazing tutorials Staci! This video is the only reason I felt confident enough to tackle a sweater that needed seaming. Now I've done it, I don't know what I saw so scared of! :)
Thank you thank you thank you . Finally! After trying to do this stitch i thought I was doomed never to understand and make it. Your tutorial just helped me do it! . I've watched other videos but I just couldn't get it right. Awesome. Thank you again. So happy.
Unbelievably beautiful! I finally, finally understand this stitch. I'm not sure what I was missing with other videos, but this one made sense and I've mastered the method on a double moss stitch pattern no less. It is harder to see the ladders on the double moss, but everything lined up great when I pulled the magic cord, lol. Thanks Stacy. You're the best.
I've watched so many other videos trying to figure this stitch out and thanks to you, I finished my project! Thanks for giving us a good, clear view and for flipping the piece over so we can see what it looks like on the back. None of the other videos did that.
This tutorial is the best one for mattress stitch. I've seen so many videos but having difficulty understanding it. You made it super clear ! You're amazing!
I have struggled with the mattress stitch for a while and this video was my lightbulb moment! It finally makes sense and I can't wait to try it again. THANK YOU!!
I just love your videos. I always feel so clear and confident after watching them, and on the trickier ones, sometimes I need to play and pause, play and pause but that works because you explain things in such a clear step by step process. I started knitting 18 months ago and found you quite early on and I've been loving it (even though I live in the sub-tropical climate of Queensland Australia haha) and I owe you a super grateful thank you.
Thank you so much for your great tutorial! Finally mattress stitch makes sense! Thanks to this little video, I'm finally stitching together the squares for a blanket I knitted for y friend back in 2019. Better late than never ;)
Diane Schuller - if the throw is machine washable, it's a good idea to weave in the ends and tie a knot. If the blanket is (non-superwash) wool, you always want to weave in all of the ends, from knitting and seaming.
Thank you for your fast response! I really appreciate your vast knowledge of knitting and the resources (videos) you have posted! This stitch isn't the only one your videos have helped me with, I'm a long time subscriber.
I could never get it through my head how it would disappear until I saw you do it in the video. Thank you sooooo much. Now maybe I can do it also. I keep learning so much from you. Thanks again.
Good. Afternoon from New Zealand. I enjoy your videos. It has taken many frustrating moments, for me to learn mattress stitch. At long last ,I can do it and love it.I only have one problem now. I knit toys for charity. Mainly animals. When I am sewing up and have to change colour, I have a problem starting in the new colour. I leave enough thread but do not know how do take my previous colour through to the back, and to start my new colour.I usually just use the colour that I started with. I am 82 yrs old with all my marbles and love my knitting. Appreciate your help. Ann.
It's usually fine to keep seaming with the same color, as mattress stitch doesn't show, anyway. That is what I would do, especially if I was seaming a small toy that is difficult to turn inside out to deal with multiple yarn ends.
Colette Norton - it probably doesn't matter, but you may want to send a message to that pattern designer and ask if one direction is preferred over the other.
Yes - any direction you prefer. You can also just turn your work so it's facing the direction you are most comfortable working. I prefer working up, or right-to-left.
@technochocolate123 Thank you! You'll usually notice that the videos with the most views have been available the longest - like several years. This video is only about one year old, so the views aren't as high as others. :)
I have another video that deals with that directly - "Knitting Help - Seaming Garter Stitch". Sorry I can't give you a link here in the comments, but you can search for it on my channel page.
Hi, Staci! I'm getting ready to use mattress stitch to seam up a stockinette sweater sleeve, starting at the cuff and going up to the armpit. (The sleeve will be set into the body later.) You mentioned in this video that there's a pretty significant ridge on the inside when you are grabbing the bars between the first stitches (selvedge stitches) on either side and the second stitches on either side. Would it be advisable to use the horizontal bars in the *middle* of each column of selvedge stitches instead, so that you only have a half-stitch from each side on the inside of the sleeve seam? That would produce a regular-looking colunm of knit stitches on the public side of the seam and reduce some of the bulk on the inside of the seam, but I was worried that it might make the seam weaker. What do you think? (The yarn is a worsted weight Targhee (sp?) yarn -- Brooklyn Tweed -- so it's lofty, and stretches during blocking, though the sweater pieces have already been blocked prior to this upcoming seaming.) Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!
You can try it - the seam won't be as secure and available to take pressure as a normal mattress stitch, but yes, there would be less of a ridge on the inside of the work.
VeryPink Knits - Thanks so much for the quick response, Staci! I'll stick with the regular mattress stitch, then. Thanks for all the helpful podcasts and videos!
I'm still a fairly new knitter so I have what may be a dumb question. I'm seaming panels of a throw together. Done. I wasn't sure whether the tail from seaming gets woven in once finished at the end of the seam. I didn't think a knot was cool so I did weave in the end. Is that what you would do/recommend?
Not sure if you can help but I need to mattress stitch with 2 panels of stockinette going different directions. So panel one goes up and down but panel 2 is turns 1/4 turn and goes left to right. Do i do it the same? TIA
i just finished my first knit sweater, and if i wouldve remembered watching this video a while back, my poor sad looking sweater would look soooo much better. kinda sad now....oh well i guess
How do you know how long to make your yarn so that you can do the entire seam in one piece? Also, do you try to do the entire side and underarm seam with one piece of yarn? Do you use this seam with edges that have been decreased, such as raglan sleeves? Can you tell I'm a newbie, LOL.
Sadaajit - many of my sweater tutorials walk you through all of these steps - really too much to answer here in a comment. :) This short video will also answer some of your questions: ruclips.net/video/vUEu3Dz9BZ8/видео.html
could you do a tutorial for using this to seam up a hat? or go over other ways to seam up a hat I'm not a huge fan of knitying in the round so if I can make things and seam them I will I just am not great at seaming
+Emma Clark - seaming a hat is exactly as I've demonstrated here, as the shape of the piece won't make a difference. But the stitch used makes a little difference...you can see all of my seaming/grafting videos here: verypink.com/category/techniques/seaming-grafting/
You are my very favourite teacher. You make every step so very clear. Thank you.

Oh, that's so nice to hear, thank you! And glad I could help you out. :)
The best tutorial I have seen for the mattress stitch. Thank you!

As always, your videos a clear and easy to follow. You are my first stop any time I have a question about a technique.
So clear! I appreciate your straightforward tutorials more than I can say. :)

Your videos are so clear! I just watched and followed another person's video and I did it all wrong! I should have watch this first.
Your videos are spot on! You are the best at describing technique and make it fun.

Why did I not discover this years ago?! It makes such a beautiful and disappearing seam. Not easy on the eyes but worth it!!!
Diane Schuller - if the throw is machine washable, it's a good idea to weave in the ends and tie a knot. If the blanket is (non-superwash) wool, you always want to weave in all of the ends, from knitting and seaming.
I love your detailed videos! I finally have a clear understanding of this stitch. Thanks so much!!!

Thank you from New Zealand. I will continue up with same colour now.Your advice was appreciated.
Just watched your video on the mattress stitch, coolest thing i have seen in knitting so far!! Thank you for sharing!
in all the years I have learnt new things in knitting you are the best at explaining stuff....even though I am man!!
best tutorial for mattress stitch ever! I get it....finally. Woooo!

This is the best mattress stitch video I've seen yet; I wonder why it's less popular than others?
Yes - any direction you prefer. You can also just turn your work so it's facing the direction you are most comfortable working. I prefer working up, or right-to-left.
I love how excited you get when you pull them both together. hahahaha
Awesome! I HATE sewing seams...mostly because I can't make them look nice. Now they don't seem so intimidating. THANK YOU!
@technochocolate123 Thank you! You'll usually notice that the videos with the most views have been available the longest - like several years. This video is only about one year old, so the views aren't as high as others. :)

You just saved me so much pain.
You're welcome! And yes, "mistress stitch" would be something else entirely. :)

Will there be a difference if you should be using this on a plain garter stitch?
Perfect! Thank you so much.
What happens when you are seaming up an angled piece in mattress stitch? Do I just move over one row of stitches and keep going?
Can the mattress stitch be done from the opposite end, top to bottom, instead of bottom to top?
i just finished my first knit sweater, and if i wouldve remembered watching this video a while back, my poor sad looking sweater would look soooo much better. kinda sad now....oh well i guess
