The advice to not pull tight until you have done about an inch was SO helpful for seeing what I was doing and for controlling the neatness when tightening up. Thank you Norman.
I have watched this video many times as my knitting has matured. Each time, I get more out of it. Reviewing fundamental stitches has made me a better knitter.
Norman presents extremely professional videos that are to the point with variations on how to achieve the desired technique, common issues and when best to apply a particular method. Whenever I need help, Norman is the only one I now consult! Thank you for sharing such valuable information, Norman!
Norman, you are the best! I have avoided mattress stitch because I did not want to deal with seaming. When knitting in the round in stockinette, I create a faux seam by purling 1 stitch at each side to give the appearance of a seam. You have made this look so easy and I will try this soon. Good tip to block before seaming. I tend to be a bit OCD about numbers so when knitting the garment, I will place stitch markers at the end of every 25 or so rows to make it easier to confirm the expected number of stitches have been seamed. Thanks so much!
I know that I can always count on finding out how to do specific knitting instructions like sewing knitted seams from nimble needles! You are so clear and your videos sooo helpful!
I had to seam together for the first time and used your tutorial. Your instruction was very clear and I appreciate the details you give. Thank you for making this video! I have been knitting for many years but feel like a beginner still 🙂
Thank you thank you for your video. It was easy to follow, as are all your tutorials. I appreciate all the help you’ve provided me now and in the past. Keep up the amazing work and thank you again🧶
Perfect timing for me to find this tutorial. I am making flat ribbed tube socks, and noticed your video on fingerless gloves, which I will try to make. I have not done well sewing the seam on my first sock, but now, I think I'll do better on the second. Thank you for your clear instructions. Watching them helps me get better every day.
Thank you so much. I am making my 1st sweater and have been reluctant to seam it together. Your video is the clearest explanation & visual I've found!!!! Thank you soooo much!!❤
Oh dear. I have always stuck to knitting throws and such like that do not need sewing which is my pet hate… this year the focus is on knitting sleeveless tabards and pullovers to wear with hunted down preloved shirts in all colours and pattern, so I need to get my act together with the sewing side of things. Thanks Norman for the unfussy gentle approach to get started with 🙏
Ah, this is exactly what I needed today. Thank you. I'm going to explore some of the wonderful videos you have. You explain well and have a pleasant voice.
Thankyou so much I’ve been looking everywhere for the best explanation of how to do an invisible join with knitting squares. Your a brilliant teacher.❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I make animals and toys. I am making a realistic frog and I need to seam him invisibly. This is really going to make my knitting projects look so much cleaner!!
Seaming is the Mt. Everest of knitting for me! I already took a class on seaming with a private knitting tutor and it still scares me. I would absolutely love to see a video on seaming with a varied edge of multiple stitch types or angles, sleeves in particular!
I have a question, when knitting something like a sweater (where you will eventually be sewing pieces together like this), would you recommend *not* slipping the first stitch of every row while you are knitting the piece? I've always slipped the first stitch of my rows because the edge looks so nice and neat, but have struggled immensely with the mattress stitch/finishing when the time comes to sew all the pieces together. Even moving in a stitch or so is difficult for me; especially when sewing things like sleeves, which have all those increases near the edge. Thank you! Your videos are amazing and I have learned so much from you 🧶💜
btw to anyone reading thats just starting out (like me teehee) its not really important how you seam these, unless you want it to look seemless, if you like the look of a seam, then just sew it together like any other fabric, honestly id recommend experimenting around and sewing through different stitches, i just did that and finished off a lovely little hat :)
well....you can certainly do it and I always say "do whatevevr brings you joy". But this video is about the mattress stitch which does have a specific way to do :)
Thank you! This was so helpful! Do you have a tutorial for piecing together pieces that do not have the knot stitch edge? Perhaps one that has a garter stitch edge? BTW, I love your tutorials! Keep up the great work!
Hello! First of all I have to thank you for all your tutorials and work because following your instructions helped me find my will to knit again! And every single of them is so well written and explained too! So thank you so, so much! Second, I wanted to ask you a thing: it's possible to stitch together two double knitted pieces? Which stitch I should use to get a neat assemble? Because the project I have in mind is pretty big, it's a blanket and it has a design that needs to be very neat or it will look wonky. Thank you!
hm...i have a very detailed post on grafting stitches on my blog: nimble-needles.com/tutorials/how-to-graft-knitting-stitches/ Here on youtube i only have a small video: ruclips.net/video/VEWkpzU2JLU/видео.html
Hi Norman, enjoy watching your tutorials, theyre very clear. Im about to start knitting a cardigan. If i was to slip the first stitch in my knitting, would that help make seaming the peices together easier? Any advice for a beginner would be appreciated....thank you
Well, you have to weave in the tails as normal on the backside (or through the ridge you created in the middle). Here's a video that shows you how I weave in ends: ruclips.net/video/aa59mMrgmCQ/видео.html
I'm sorry what is the best way to knit edges in knitting when I want to sew two pices like that? I'LL APPRECIATE IT IF YOU ANSWER MY COMMENT AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR TUTORIALS
@@NimbleNeedles thank you! I watched it but as you explained there are many ways to knit edges. Are all of them sutable when I want to sew two pices together?
well, knots should be prevented in knitting. they unravel easily, that's why you won't see me tieing any in this video (or any other video). So yes, you need to weave in the tails later on. you can, however, use a cast-on/bind-off tail if it's in the right position.
@@NimbleNeedles OK thank you, I just don't know what to do when you are goin to seam both ends. I'm just binge watching your videos to get an idea. When you seam both ends does it need to end to a specific knit pattern like regular knit or a purl?
Norman, I need help! I’ve looked through most of your videos as well as researched this online, and I cannot figure it out. I’m hoping you have time to show us as I can’t believe I am the only one out there who doesn’t know how to do this particular thing! I am an “advanced beginner” knitting a scarf that has four strips of 20 stitches each. I knitted the first strip, and now I have begun the second. The pattern says I’m supposed to “knit the last stitch together with the selvage loop of strip 1”. Problem #1: My last stitch of every row before I turn is always loose and so my selvage edge is looser than my knitting. After having searched and failed miserably, I used your links on your “10 best knitting books” and bought three of them, hoping that they will cover how to join live stitches (for lack of a better term) to a strip that has already been knitted. (Problem #2) Do you have a tutorial for this? There are lots of tutorials, where they joined strips with a tapestry needle, but I’m supposed to knit it in to the previous strip. Can you point me in the right direction or would you be willing to do a tutorial for those of us who don’t know how to do this? I would be forever grateful! Cindy
@@NimbleNeedles I tried that first but unfortunately she has no way to contact her. You can only find her on Ravelry (Prosser). I know how to join two pieces together with a tapestry needle but I need to attach the last stitch on the needle to the strip I've already done. I now understand you can't help with someone else's pattern. I've ordered the big 700 page knitting book as well as the Vogue one from your link on the video that shows lots of combinations so hopefully it will be addressed. I've been stuck but it comes today so yay!! I researched lots and lots of RUclips channels but your two are by far the best. I've learned so much!! Thanks for all you do, Norman! Cindy
I am guessing when you have increases of stiches regularly, like in sleeves, you need to do 1 loop at a time also. This is the worst part of knitting for me. Even though I have been working on doing seems better.😊

No, I wouldn't slip stitches if I need to sew something. Creates unstable edges in my opinion

after i finish seaming it, how can i prevent it from undoing itself? do i just tie a knot on each end?

Yes and no. I have a video on 3needle bind off and grafting stitches. Both work - but it's not labelled as seaming shoulders
@@NimbleNeedles thank you will look for them
How do you know what size needle we need
experience, really. Use the smallest where you can still fit the tail through.
Do you tie a knot of any sort at the start so it doesn't unravel?
no. you have to weave in the tail later on, tho. But ideally speaking, you leave a long enough cast-on tail to use that.
