The NPCs are real people controlled by a computer, they are low risk inmates who get a chance of freedom if they survey a game in slayer by being an NPC, that's why john is there with a broom

3. NPCs have to survive 3 rounds instead of 30. However no one controls them, they have predetermined routes and actions that they will continue to do as long as they are capable. In one of the earlier scenes there’s an NPC with half their face missing but they’re still continuing their actions. It’s brutal because you can see the genuine fear in their eyes.

Honestly, this was such a missed opportunity. Having a movie about people's free will being stripped from them while everyone thinks of it as entertainment is terrifying, kinda like a Being John Malkovich kind of deal
@@eddydiaz2609 The Matrix has almost nothing in common with this film. In Gamer one person is basically just remote controlling another person, they're not connected to a giant VR simulation. The Matrix didn't really explore free will that much, more just Cartesianism to some extent but even then it wasn't really very philosophical beyond the basic premise.
I me the whole idea behind the pill choice is free will Richard.

I saw this movie when it came out. I was 22 and actually considered myself an avid gamer. I felt ashamed to have watched it. It was pointless, overly over the top for the sake of being over the top, and it felt as if an edge lord 13 year old wrote the screenplay because of all of the language and sex man's violence involved. It was an interesting watch but my God it was fucking terrible.
Even 9 year old me knew it would be a trainreck, I didn't even give it a chance.
the fact that Dexter is in this is so unsettling
I feel bad for Michael C Hall, he was at a high point in his career with one of the best seasons of Dexter yet, then he was in this piece of shit then the next few seasons for Dexter were bad so I blame Gamer(2009) for the downfall of Dexter

I loved this movie. The NPCs only have no body armor, no control, etc. If they survive, they get out, or something along those lines. High risk, high reward.

The part where crazy dude is sweeping was explained. you can choose to be put into the environment as an uncontrollable NPC and if you survive only one game you get set free. pretty much all the NPCs die so the ods are against you.
This is just another story of good actors staring in a bad movie, like the actor who plays Castle is a pretty good actor

I remember watching this movie when I was like 10, and as the 10 year old gamer I was, I enjoyed it. Mainly because I didn't know wtf was going on.
I remember I was so hyped for this movie and I watched and I thought it was amazing. I tried rewatching it a couple weeks ago- couldn't even get past the first like 20 minutes
Say what you want about it being an edgy movie but you gotta give credit that there's a lot of great scenes.
Also Society is a parody of Second Life, not of gaming or gamers in general. Second Life is literally as depraved and degenerate as Society in Gamer.
I really guess it was an okay Comment on society Movie back in the days. But watching it now... it didn't aged well. That's why it's so Perfect 😁

During my Logan Lerman phase, as a 12 year old, I got my mom to rent this movie for us and we watched not even two minutes of it before we both cut it off. So thank you for watching it for me, because I had no desire to actually watch it because it scarred me, but not knowing what happens has also haunted me.

I simultaneously love and hate all of the pigverse characters’ voices.
The npcs are actually explained its during the beginig where they give the whole info dump. The npcs in the slayers game are death row inmates who instead of being controled by a player they are controled by ai and because they arent actively fighting they only have to survive one round instead of 30 but the thing is slayers get points for killing them and they often get killed in the crossfire so next to none actually survive a single round.
You want a great movie that really gets what it's like to be an epic gamer? Hardcore Henry. That movie still puts a smile on my face. I watched it pretty late in life, and it was like rediscovering fps games for the first time.
