you are a Rockstar!😊, so glad to see a young person doing major water changes and just the overall upkeep of such large tanks, plus you are well spoken and knowledgeable, obviously you have done your research and educated yourself on the tanks, filters and fish! good job!
Purigen really does work. The effect is visible. I used to recharge it, and you can save money doing that. But it's a pain. So I just buy new pre-made bags for my tanks every three months and consider it a cost of the hobby.
Thank you for the video. I always find the filtration (and filtration updates) just as interesting as the tanks themselves. Keep up the fine work young lady!
I really like your fish and tank. I have a small tank and I’m not very good and looking after my fish. I find it’s a real pain in the ass maintaining everything. I don’t know how you have the patience to do all this but you clearly are much more responsible than I am.
Thank you!! I'm also not the best at maintenance, but with how I've set the tanks up I find it relatively easy. I think it's just about finding what works for you!
Kaity I appreciate your teaching and clarity. I found you last year, installed an FX6 on a 300 gallon stock tank which I use for my quarantine tank for my 3000 gallon koi pond. I have 3 very large goldfish in the tank and the filter does a great job. I am using the Fluval ammonia remover and the Fluval clearmax. But I try to clean out the filter and change those bags about every 4-6 weeks.
Instead of using the hose to drain the filter you can shut the intake valve and while the pump is still on slightly open the drain valve and you’ll get some gurgling noise. Let that happen for maybe 10 seconds then shut the drain valve and then the out valve and then unplug. Your water in the filter will be lower. Then when you are putting the filter back together you can leave it empty put lid on and secure and put on in and out hose open the in and then the out and it will fill your filter by itself. As long as you don’t drain the hoses. 😊love watching your videos. I have 3 cichlid tanks one with Frontosa
stick the whole hose into the water and close one end, that way you dont get fish water into your mouth, but dont feel bad as we fish keepers know how that tastes, live and learn, as always your fish look great, well done young lady
Hi Kaity, Your Tanganyika tank and your Malawi tank look amazing, anyway. The Purigen. always does such a good job clarifying the water, Since I saw you using it and the UV clarifier, I decided to do the same in my Malawi tank and got such good results. I have to remark that your content is really useful and entertaining in the same manner. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🐠and experiences with us. Greetings from Peru✌🙌!!!
you can use the inbuilt pipe outlet on the bottom of the filter for water water changes. just connect a hose to it and put the other end outside or in your sinc, then turn off the outlet pipe but leave the inlet pipe on and keep the filter going.this will use the filters pipe to drain the tank. then to fill it back up connect the hose to the outlet on the bottom of the filter and put the other end in whatever you get your water from, eg if you mix it in a bucket put the end of the pipe in the bucket and turn the out flow pipe on the in flow pipe off and turn on the filter and it will pump the water from the bucket into the tank. it is basically a built in water changer.
Yes,i like the cleaning of my filter...once a month...and then the reward,a cup of coffee and a snack on the coach watching. Me again from Belgium/Europe. Greetings mate.
I own several FX 6’s and a couple FX 4’s. Their electronic self priming is a plus. I clean my pads monthly as waste still in water column but hidden in canister. I had one motor fail on a FX 6 after 5 years continuous service. Fluval offers a replacement motor for $60. Works like a champ. I have used many filters including eheim’s. Eheims are great but sometimes finicky with leaking if not clamped right. Love your tank as looks similar colorful saltwater tank. Plus your tank lighting helps with whiter LED’s vs yellowish led freshwater
Haha. I always make sure I am home for at least am hr after canister clean out to check for leaks..... and I sit my canister is a low square bucket so that catches any leak beforenots too late. Best advice I've gotten.
Every time I clean my tank, I always end up getting some water in my mouth🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Love the video, it's so impressive that you can maintain a tank at that size by yourself, I struggle with my 4ft tank at times. Love from South Africa🫶
A tip for the siphon, put the whole hose in the tank so it fills up, then just cover the end with your thumb so none comes out until you are in position to let it rip
I clean my canister filter once a month and it looks dirty every time. i can't imagine if I go beyond two months! 😅 So satisfying to see a clean canister filter and a cystal clear tank! 😊
Try rinsing out the uvc before filling up the tank, you'll be surprised at how dirty they get. It will help with keeping the water clear when filling back up. I rinse mine out every second water change.
That thick brown 'gunk' nasty stuff in the sponges is some of the BEST stuff to water any houseplants and garden plants. It's worth filling the canister half way up and scrubbing the sponges together until they are pretty clean. Take that nasty soup water and target feed the plants. If you're in to that sort of thing. Good stuff.
Hi kaity , if you fill your second and third trays with biological media and your sponges course medium and fine on 1st tray that will keep the water sparkling clean and less maintenance. You definitely need to improve your biological filtration which in turn will do most of the cleaning for you. I have a 210 gallon 6ft tank with predator haps and peacocks. I don’t open my fx6 filter up until the 9-12 month range. My filter pads and trays have a quarter of build up you have . PH 8.0-8.2 nitrates 10-40ppm and weekly water changes of 15-35 % only. No need to waste my on purigen or water clearer products. I’m in Melbourne Vic, love video’s
Kaity, thanks so much for making the effort to record, edit and share, I always enjoy your videos. tho I always LIKE your vids I finally subscribed tonight, thanks again for sharing ... greetings from Toronto in Canada .. cheers
I've never used any type of chemical to clear up my water, and my water is very clear. Usually, after I clean the glass, the water is very murky but give it about an hr or so and its super clear, im loving my top fin power pro 110 filter.
haha it's 25:0725:07 funny I just did a big water change last night an now you cleaning lol you make it look so easy doing Canister cleaning 😂 this was great video oh yeah you still got my looking like ther no water thanks for the tips ❤
Your tanks are great but, just a couple of comments (if I May) on your FX maintenance (I also have a FX filter). Firstly, the blue sponge is great but it gets clodged very quick and that increases nitrates. Also, I noticed the water flow is reduced because of that. So, I stopped using it and just left the standard sponge (the black one) and my water is as crystal as if it had the blue one in the basket. Secondly, I used to do quite the same as you when doing the maintenance of the filter but found that, I could fill in the filter more easily without having to drink a bit of the tank water ha ha. Once the in/out valves are back on and right before changing the water, open both valves and the gravity will make water flow back in the filter. After a sew seconds, the filter will be ready to go and you can proceed to change as usual. By the way, why do you change so much water of your tank? More than 50% I can imagine. Im curious. Cheers from Mexico!
Thanks so much. I’ve been fishkeeping in NSW for 20+ yrs and now just wanting my first large tank (4ft plus). Thanks for your info on the canisters. Have you ever used another brand? The Fluval are pretty great
Kaity nice job on the water change but fyi the ‘propeller’ is actually called an ‘impeller’. The spinny thing in a water pump is called an impeller and aeroplanes use propellers.
I have a weird love/hate relationship with cannister filters. They're more efficient than HOB filters by a longshot, but I'm somewhat old school in terms of just opening up the top of an HOB and swapping the filters during my upkeep. Had a cannister filter and it felt like a little more work than I cared to deal with. Oh well! Everyone has their preferences.
Hey I love your videos such beautiful fish I am 3 months into the hobby is there a chart or a list all about API test levels for cichilds so I'm not searching 1 by 1 and seeing different answers..thank u
Love your fish tanks. I have two similar tanks and have been looking for better aesthetic lights and mounting brackets. I love yours, especially the right angle brackets and the overhead bracket across the entire tank. Would you mind telling me where I could get them? Thanks.
Hi Kaity, great hands-on video! Can I ask you a couple of off-topic questions? I'm curious about your 6 feet tank setup. Apparently, this tank has no reinforcing braces (perhaps internally at the bottom?). What are its dimensions and glass thickness? Is this tank stand made of thick MDF only?
Love watching your videos! Can you tell me what cameras and or software you use I’m thinking of setting up 125 gallon African Chiclid tank like to start doing what you are doing by the way I’m in the USA
Just got a 1200x600x600 tank with cabinet and it came with a Fluval FX5 for....$AUD80 TOTAL!! Was gonna do cichlids but Im gonna do a planted Rainbow tank with plants growing out of the top as well. Pretty similar filter to the FX6 in terms of maintenance?
Just a quick query on your fx rubbers that connect the inlet & outlet pipes in & out of the tank. Have yours ever had a white build up that covers them? Apparently it means that the rubber is top quality but the trouble is, it's leaving a white like dust on the water surface that doesn't go!
Python systems are amazing to use for doing your tanks but they can be expensive I made my own with the proper parts for under $25 and you can make it with any size hose lengthwise that you need I made it years ago and I am still using it to this day on my tanks
Same! Cheap pump, 19mm hose pipe and a filter inlet. You then just need a bucket if you don't want to fill directly from the sink. Been doing it this way for years.
The python system that I built actually uses a bell valve system that connects to your sink so there are no buckets involved and it works just like the ones in the store that you buy
It dissolves soooo slowly, especially because my pH is always kept quite high at 8.2 since I add in buffer every time I do a water change. It would eventually dissolve but it would take years
I live in Pennsylvania and I've always used tap water to clean out my canister filters and never ever have I had a problem but it's to each his own or her own lol
Cleaning everything with tank water is the safest and most popular way of teaching and doing it but the more someone progresses in their knowledge, there have been studies to show that you will not kill off all your beneficial bacteria if you run tap water for a few min. But the studies show it would probably take closer to 45 min to an hr of rinsing to kill it all off. But as long as the person knows this then they should be fine. It's new people in the hobby that don't know what they are doing and don't know anything about beneficial bacteria and don't know how tap water ran long enough could actually create a problem, this is the issue for those that don't know that should probably follow the tank water method first.
that media is not merely enough for that tank especially with african cichlid , i hope the other filter has much more media and 6 months is crazy,, how's your nitrate readings?
Maybe this is not something new… If you’re external canister filters uses o-rings, include lubricating them as a routine task. O-rings are made in a variety of different materials and the cheapest ones tends to get hard…these are usually the ones you’ll find in your filter taps etc. A little bit food grade mineral oil works well for me. Food grade silicone spray should also do the trick.😊
The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character.

Thank you for the video. I always find the filtration (and filtration updates) just as interesting as the tanks themselves. Keep up the fine work young lady!
The aquarium looks amazing! I just added purigen to my fx6
Absolutely beautiful tank😍
I've had a 300 gallon with those same filters for the last 7yrs with one male and 8 female Zaire Frontosa.

Those fish look fantastic, clearly well looked after.
Gotta watch til the end-so funny. Great video Kaity! Thanks,
Beautiful tanks
You are qualified to become a professional Aquarium Shop Owner 👍
I believe it’s the best decision you made by changing to a second African tank, I wish kaveman aquatic did the same

Very nice tanks 😊
I found this channel recently and I really like about your setup for your aquarium
Congratulations Kaity, I see you just hit 50K subscribers ... very well deserved! 😊😊😊
Omg the ending! 😂 We've all been there! You should look up starting a siphon without your mouth. No need to suck up tank water and bacteria anymore.
Every time I clean my tank, I always end up getting some water in my mouth🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Love the video, it's so impressive that you can maintain a tank at that size by yourself, I struggle with my 4ft tank at times. Love from South Africa🫶

Great tutorial! I run a FX6 on a 60G cube and love it. I'd load that middle tray up to the max with bio media though. Keep up the great vids.
All difficult things have their origin in that which is easy, and great things in that which is small.
Try rinsing out the uvc before filling up the tank, you'll be surprised at how dirty they get. It will help with keeping the water clear when filling back up. I rinse mine out every second water change.

Unterhaltsames Video! Zwei schöne, gepflegte Aquarien mit afrikanischen Chichliden! 😃
Shush
We need to see more of the tang tank!
I've never used any type of chemical to clear up my water, and my water is very clear. Usually, after I clean the glass, the water is very murky but give it about an hr or so and its super clear, im loving my top fin power pro 110 filter.

Trusting our intuition often saves us from disaster.
That Pothos next to your tank needs some love. lol
Great video as always kaity!
The best thing about the future is that it only comes one day at a time.
Hi...try putting a little bit of Vaseline around the top of the filllter inlet and outlet.....makes taking the pipes offf easy ..they just slip off...
I'm loving that tank you set up 😊👍👍
Love your work as allways
Purigen with Matrix is great! I have it in a FX6 on a two Firemouth 75 gallon.

I remwbwr one of your first videos u did this but in buckets upstairs in the bath!!! And I commented that's so much work!! Hahahh ❤
Great video ! Your tanks always look amazing 🤩 love them both 👏‼️
Nice chiclids tank thanks for sharing ideas.

Thanks for educating us❤
Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant.
Bloody awesome video as always ✌️
easiest sub of my life
Using chemi pure blue is awesome aswell i prefer that over purigen
I really like your aquarium 😍👍👍👍
I have never really been into African cichlids, although I do have a single frontosa but your guys are awesome, might buy a couple more 👍☹️
Hey I love your videos such beautiful fish I am 3 months into the hobby is there a chart or a list all about API test levels for cichilds so I'm not searching 1 by 1 and seeing different answers..thank u

I love your tank lights. What are those I need to order some ASAP!
Great video, how often do you clean FX6
Puragen is good stuff. Good job😊❤ thx
Yaaaa. Stopped usi g buckets year ago!! The best!
That tank looks amazing at night witht he lights.
Really nice! I have a question, do Cichlids prefer tanks without plants? I wasn't sure if its better for the fish or simply your choice.
African cyclids can eat and destroy the plants. So there are many set ups without plants. But certain fish do like plants.

Hi Kaity - where did you get your tap connector from ? The one in laundry .
Just a quick query on your fx rubbers that connect the inlet & outlet pipes in & out of the tank. Have yours ever had a white build up that covers them? Apparently it means that the rubber is top quality but the trouble is, it's leaving a white like dust on the water surface that doesn't go!

Can you do a video on crushed coral how often you replace then does it desolve into fine particals? This would be a cool video hope u see this
It dissolves soooo slowly, especially because my pH is always kept quite high at 8.2 since I add in buffer every time I do a water change. It would eventually dissolve but it would take years
I also second other comments mentioning more bio media. I'd take out the pads in the centre sections and add more bio balls etc
Tank looks good I have two fx6 son my 180. Let me see what your doing
Friends are those rare people who ask how we are and then wait to hear the answer.
I live in Pennsylvania and I've always used tap water to clean out my canister filters and never ever have I had a problem but it's to each his own or her own lol

Hi kaity can i ask you how many times you change the water in a week ? What kind of food u feed them ? Crystal clear water
Dış filtre temizliğinde en önemli nokta, mevcut akvaryum suyunun kullanarak temizliğin gerçekleştirilmesi. Aksi takdirde yararlı bakteri kolonisini kaybedebiliriz. What kind of lighting do you have over the aquarium? Can you provide the brand?
Love your video. How many cichlids do you have in your tank?
Where did you get the plastic top that hold your glass lids on top of the aquarium? What is it called?
hellooo . how many litres is the tank ? is amazing
You’re gonna sell me on these FX6’s, I believe. It’s either gonna be one of these or a UNS canister
that media is not merely enough for that tank especially with african cichlid , i hope the other filter has much more media and 6 months is crazy,, how's your nitrate readings?
The balloons floated away along with all my hopes and dreams.
Looks like you’re back publishing videos now.. How’s your health? Hope you’re feeling better.
Maybe this is not something new…
If you’re external canister filters uses o-rings, include lubricating them as a routine task. O-rings are made in a variety of different materials and the cheapest ones tends to get hard…these are usually the ones you’ll find in your filter taps etc. A little bit food grade mineral oil works well for me. Food grade silicone spray should also do the trick.😊
