    First off, thanks for producing clear, to the point videos! It's appreciated.
    OK, I'll admit it, until recently, even though I have a 20-plus year old red eared slider, I never was serious about the aquarium hobby. But despite that my turtle Julio is thriving and doing well. Thanks to you I am stepping up my game big time!
    I recently purchased the Fluval 407 and set up the media ala KaveMan. It's looking good.

    Big thank you to you KaveMan- I inherited a 250gal tank w/FX6 a few months ago, it is my FIRST tank ever (I don't recommend this!) and it is such a beast to care for and clean (especially for someone who is 5'1"); the first time I cleaned the FX6, I watched some other cleaning video which DID NOT INFORM ME that the impeller must be removed and cleaned! So today is the first time in a long while that the impeller got a good scrubbin' (thanks to the impeller cleaning video you posted a few months later).

    With the filter still powered, close the inlet valve for 5 to 10 seconds, then close the outlet and power off unit. This will lower the level of water in Canister, water will not leak out when valves are taken off. It only lowers it past the lid but much cleaner with no leaks when energy is applied.

    I’m running dual fx6’s on my 120 African cichlid tank. When I do my water changes, I drain into a large tote inside the bathtub. Then I ring out all the foams and dunk the baskets in the tank water in the totes. This is the easiest way I’ve been able to do it. I alternate each filter cleaning every other month. Love my fx6’s.

    Would recommend to opt for coarse medium and fine pads in the side tray (circular one). You do have the default one i reckon its the medium. Insert coarse and fine too in the circular trays. That way the gunk entering the top would be reduced. Nice clarity of videos. Thanks!!!

    Hey Kevin, great vids, awesome advise! How long would you wait to clean a second FX6 filter after cleaning the first filter? I have a 225 with five Oscars and a Pleco and was wondering how long I should wait to clean the second filter to give time for the first to build good bacteria. Keep the vids coming! Thank you. Mike

    Love my Eheim Classic 2262. There won't be any bypass when it gets too dirty. The pump starts to get louder and that's when I know to clean. It happens about 5-6 months and bio has always been clean.

    Nice video. I fill my FX4 back up by connecting the inlet hose and opening the valve. Watch down the outlet tube until you start to see the water. You can throttle the inlet valve to slow the water and shut it off as it nears the top. Connect the outlet and start the pump. You'll have a small amount of air come out the return, but your system is primed quickly.

    🤔 the crushed coral can be added to substrate of the aquarium. It will do a better job of buffering because it will be spread out. The bio- media in the top tray can go in the bottom tray and medium porosity filtration foam can go into the top basket as it should when considering the foams sponges that come with the FX6 filter comes with are a coarse porosity.
    Also a prefilter can be added to the intake to help extend the life of the foams and impeller/ motor.
    Chemical filtration is unnecessary but if it must be used then a quality carbon is really all that needed. Carbon is a natural product and can be bought in bulk.
    To keep the tank in balance then add an additional inch of substrate. This will create the zones needed to properly house both types of beneficial bacteria.
    Good luck with your hobby and your channel.

    Kevin...I would put the crushed coral in the tray right after the sponge before the bio. This way the crush coral will act as a sand filter before the bio. And another benefit is that gunk actually is a PH lowering substance that will help dissolve the crushed coral for buffering and minerals. You do not have to replace the crushed coral because it buffers as it disintegrates. Just add a little more when needed.

    I have had my Fx6 going on 5 years. It is a beast. I have 125 gallon Oscar tank with Clown Loaches. I clean it once every 2-3 months. A trick with the white foam: boil it in water to sterilize it and reuse. That stuff is expensive.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! I've never used an eheim but the fluval FX6 is a beast! that can filter your 75 gallon by itself with no problems. And you can use your eheim canister as a polishing filter with just fine filter floss and chemical media if you'd like. That way you can clean and replace media in the eheim monthly while the fx6 can go multiple months without a cleaning.

      Oase biomaster are good filters. However, if you have a high bioloaded cichlid tank for example, forget it, even an 850T, cannot compete with an FX6. I know i've got one. Like a filter to have a prefilter then conside AquaEl 4500 :)

    Kev,
    When my FX6's were new, I couldn't remove the valves from the canister lids because they were so tight! Did you ever have this problem? Someone recommended using waterproof grease ($4 from Home Depot) I rubbed some on the O rings and on the inside of the valve body and what an amazing difference it made! They go on and off with zero effort now.

      Thanks for that great tip. I did want to add some medium sponges and filter floss pads on top but want to keep the same amount of biohome for a full 4 months to see if I can actually get that anaerobic bacteria growth to lower all nitrates. If it doesn’t work then next cleaning I’m definitely adding more mechanical!

  • @lazarosalazar3366
    @lazarosalazar3366 2 года назад

    On fx6, top tray is for mechanical filtration(sponges only) middle tray is bio media, bottom tray chemical, and a fine polishing pad(fine pad at the bottom keeps fine particles from getting into the impeller). Then you could judge how often to clean by when the bio media gets dirty. All the sponges could be washed and reused several times before replacing is necessary.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад

    Hi mate I have an issue. Currently running 2 fx6s on my 150gallon Moba frontosa tank. Yesterday was filter cleaning day, I did all the relevant steps regarding cleaning putting back together again. Here’s where the problem is, after I connected back up I opened the outlet first then the inlet heard all the water coming into filter turned of started to prime and was work as per usual good flow rate etc I’m now hearing what can only be described as running/trickling water coming from the fx6 no loss of flow no leaking just the water noise??? Any ideas many thanks
