You can buy those storage racks which come with the masonite base included at Bunnings. I’ve got 2 x 4ft storage racks which cost me around $70 each and did not have to go through the trouble or expense of buying plywood sheets separately and cutting them to size or painting them with waterproof liquid. The shelves are strong enough to hold 4 x 1ft or a 3ft tank. I also have that same black rubber padding on the floor in front of my racks and they are definitely water proof and easy on the knees when I need to kneel while doing water changes or having a closer look at my tanks. I applaud your commitment in making the setup structurally better though and can’t wait to see the breeding tank setup.

Then dustpan and towels. If a small tank and it has boards underneath you can tilt. But it is risky…

Hi Finn! I really like that tank, Kaity. The dimensions are fantastic. I know I'll sleep better with the rack update. 🙂I'm guessing you will too. Setting up a new tank, I've even gone as far as filling half of the new tank with water from an existing tank, as well as adding filter media or squeezing out a sponge filter of something along those lines. Anything to speed up the process. Anyway, it looks great and I can't wait to see fish go in. Have a fantastic week ahead! ~Ron

I am glad I watched these videos. I have looked at those same racks in the US. I had the same idea of adding tanks. After watching yours I would cut 3/4” (19 mm) plywood to fit the shelves. If it continues to sag, add more bracing under the shelves.

Might want to add some dither fish in with your Neolamprologus leleupi. The male can become very aggressive towards the female if she doesn't want to breed. Right now in your big tank the male is too busy keeping other fish away from the cave and the female to be aggressive towards her.

If you want to add strength, you could also add small flat steel triangles at each shelf junction. This keeps the rack looking nice but adds good strength. I don't think you will have to worry though. It is a fairly good sturdy design. Just make sure you keep all shelves in it since they are part of the structural integrity. Looking great!

  • @heaven7360

I really enjoyed the video. I love the board supports you used on the shelving. It's such a wonderful color, does the job, and a great design element on an industrial look shelving system; it's really transformed it. The tanks are off to a great start! The fish will look so beautiful in the tanks...and it's always an important element of aquarium keeping is to take into consideration safety considerations. With the boards and the weight of the tanks (in particular on the bottom level), plus the fact you won't be having threats as far as tumbling the tanks over, I think all safety concerns have been taken care of.
Love seeing your bird! I have some parrots, although demanding at times they are super charming!

Hey Kaity, I think those plants that you added are probably pothos, not anubias. Anubias grown in water looks great and usually can tolerate the beating of African cichlids and their parameters. They also require very little light, all you have to do is attach them to a rock or something with superglue or fishing line. Very nice tanks btw.

Awesome video! Those mats have worked really well for keeping the aquariums stable and preventing the bowing of the shelves! Breeding tank is looking really good too! Could even put a panel behind the shelf perhaps so all the cables and pipes can be hidden behind it? That could then be screwed to the shelf to help reduce the chance of it twisting without having to bolt anything to the wall. Having a tank for mollies would be cool too in that smaller aquarium. Have you thought about making that as a planted aquascape? Think I've finally started fixing some of the issues on my nano aquarium finally, got the pH up to 6.8 at last and the algae seems to be dying off after reducing the lighting to 4 hours/day! Almost ready to add fish finally!!

Woohooo! That's so exciting for you! It's always a fun time once you get to the point that it's almost ready for fish 😊 And thank you heaps! That's actually a really good idea for the cable management, I think I might end up doing something like that.

@@Kaityscichlids Can't wait to finally stock it! Put some more Neon Tetra's in my large corner aquarium the other day and they look brilliant there as a large shoal! Think I've finally decided on fish for the nano aquarium too. Going to go cherry shrimp, amano shrimp and nerite snails, then dwarf corydoras and pencilfish! No worries! Think something like some slatted wooden board painted white would look good there, as it would reflect the light well, be a good backdrop to the aquariums, and also contrast well with the black frame on the shelf. Would be nice and sturdy for reducing twist too! Definitely give the planted tank a go, think you could do a really good job with one! Something simple like some small to medium rocks as hardscape and maybe a bit of wood too, then plant wise perhaps some dwarf hairgrass in a carpet with some cryptocorynes for leafy plants as they'll plant direct into substrate and usually aren't too difficult or too tall to grow! I don't know if you can get tropica plants in Australia, but that's what I use and they're really good quality! Tropica aquasoil is really good substrate as well and that's all you'd need as it's got all the nutrients you'd need! Definitely give Green Aqua's RUclips channel a watch if you haven't already, they're really good at aquascaping and especially with plants and tank design. Their channel helped me loads when I first started out aquascaping!

@@Kaityscichlids yes it was worth the extra effort..there was alot of pressure on the corners of the tank.....adding more rock might of cracked it over time so you done the right thing....I wish I lived in Australia, I would be searching for rainbow fish for sure...well,sweet dreams and no fish tank nightmares 💦🤣🇬🇧🇦🇺

You have things on both sides - it wouldn't be very likely for you to hit it from either side with the amount of force it would take to cause it to fold. Looks great!

It may come out in the wrong way, but I do think that you have a fine rack there. 😉
Puns aside. The rack looks fine and stable and the floorboards will undoubtly add enough strenght to the rack. As you said yourself, you’re not going to climb around at the shelves.
Looking forward to be following your new aquarium room.

Yes I definitely think it's much stabler now!! Sadly for me no climbing the racks though 🤣 Thank you heaps 😊😊

Awesome tank rack Katy, if you want any super easy to grow small Java fern attaching plant for the new projects I am personally 99% certain Fin from Atlas has a large amount of Java Fern plantlets that one of his customers, myself, traded in 1.5 weeks ago, I'm sure if you asked nicely he probably give you some! All your tanks look amazing I especially love the Tanganyika tank!

Forgot to add that you could easily add some cross bracing on the back / sides of that unit by using some flat steel, bolts and washers. There are more than enough pre-drilled holes in it to make it an easy project.

If you are going to raise fry in a tank by themselves, you should purchase a small tank. A 5, 10 or 15 gallon tank would be ideal. You want a tank with a small bottom area so that the fry do not have to travel to far to get food. I use a 14 gallon rimless aquarium when the fry become free swimming. I have tried to target feed in a larger aquarium, but the parents were scared of the food and keep the fry away. It is going to be a frustrating and exciting learning process.
