I think that two things can be true at the same time. I don’t believe Chuck Daly went into the initial scrimmage planning to throw the game. However, I do think he saw an opportunity to check the Dream Team’s egos. That’s probably why Coach K didn’t know anything about it before hand. So Daly leaned into the poor play by stacking the deck against the Dream Team and not substituting correctly or making adjustments or by sitting Jordan the majority of the game. Just my two cents.
Mike said he probably would have reached on and messed it up. I tend to think, from my recollections of that day, that Daly has that plan up his sleeve and pulled it out after the pre-scrimmage practice.
Exactly this. The players have said many times that they were getting their butts handed to them by the young guys so the pros were certainly not throwing it. When Daly saw how well the young guys were playing, I think he responded exactly the way you describe. He probably thought that these young guys might be the best talent they were face compared to the Olympics opponents and used this as an opportunity to send a message to his players.
I do believe Chuck Daly saw the opportunity to check their egos and took it. He made poor adjustments and ended the game at half time while the college guys were ahead. After that he had their attention.
Yeah.. my problem is that their are some trying to use that for an excuse to why the dream team loss. They loss because they got outplayed point blank.
The Dream Team documentary even explained it. There was an 11 pt difference at half time….do you really think the Dream Team couldn’t make up that difference? Especially Larry who comes alive at the 2nd half! And Jordan wasn’t even playing!

@nicknick2903 There is a game video that I saw before I heard the toe story wherein I saw Bird, at the end of a game, going off the court with his teammates *carrying* one of his shoes. I wish I could find that video again. I'm thinking it might have been from a game shortly before the doctor's intervention. 🤷♀️ But, I don't know.
Either Rogers hadn't been told about trying to trash talk the Legend, or he HAD and decided to see whether what he'd been warned about was true, LOL. I suspect the first is true, but the second would be even better. It's sadly ironic that Larry's background was responsible for him having the will and work ethic he had, yet also was why he screwed his back doing manual labour that he could easily afford to pay to be done for his mother. When you think of what that cost him, the SMART thing would be to have paid for a group of people to do it. Magic could still play at a top level in the Dream Team, but Larry really was a shadow of the monster he had been (which is still a scary shadow, let's be honest); as we saw in the Bird/Magic documentary, he initially refused to be part of the Dream Team as he felt he was so limited by his back that he didn't think he was worth having on the team. I think that may also contributes to him not having the reputation with NBA fans younger than about 45 that he deserves. People looking at the Dream Team might wonder why he was co-captain as he didn't seem to do much, let alone anything special.
Bird did have someone lined up to do that particular shoveling, but they didn't show up. There were many factors and incidents that contributed to Bird's awful back issues over time.
