The question people like to bring up, is could those players play in today's NBA. And the answer is 100 percent YES. With today's rules protecting the players, those guys would have no problem. The bigger question is, could today's players play then.....when a HARD foul knocking you into the 2nd row was just a common foul.

Regarding Isiah not being chosen, I tend to think it was an NBA executive decision. The team would be representing the USA to the world. They wanted the players to be good ambassadors for our country. Notice how they were even concerned about Barkley, and for good reason. Barkley caused an incident due to a dirty foul. He later made up for it by befriending the players on the opposing teams.
The NBA did not want their players to be viewed as thugs on the court.

      @@JameenODHipHopNews
That Miracle on Ice HBO documentary is so good. Arguably better than the Magic Bird doc and that was one was excellent.
      I will say:
Prior to 1979, a defender could use their hand to impede the progress of the offensive player.
That is why in the 1960's the pace of play was so fast. If you dribbled the ball long enough you would get handchecked and be forced to turn the ball over so you had to keep the ball moving faster. Expansion slowed the pace of play and then in 1979 you were no longer allowed to extend your hand to control the movement of another player.
Prior to 1995, you could not keep your hand on an offensive player for an "extended" time unless it was in the post. However, a hand that was contacting the offensive player for not an "extended" time was permitted meaning the "hand check" existed though in a more limited fashion.
Prior to 2004 hand checking was illegal from the baseline to the opposite foul line.....also you could not defend a player in the low post with an extended hand (needed to use arm)....and could not use your leg to root out an offensive player posting up.
Prior to and Today.....any contact by a defender to an offensive player with their hand is considered a foul.
The reason I contend very few players in today's league would not have been able to play professionally during Bird and Magic's era is because you not only needed the skills to get off your shot but you also needed the strength to get off your shot while being hand checked. And by comparison today's players are weak....or as Kobe would say "Charmin Soft"!

Two things I want to mention. It wasn't the first time professionals played, it was the first time American Professionals played in the Olympics. Other world countries had been allowed to use professionals but America wasn't until this time. Our college kids had always had to play against their pros and we would still beat them until we lost the gold a couple of times because the rest of the world had caught up to American college players with their professionals. The 2nd thing is that this is not the entire documentary. Please check out the real one which is longer in length.

It was a very smart move to leave Isaiah Thomas off of that team. You've got a lot of egos, a lot of anxiety over this first time situation at the Olympics and you don't want a divisive person in that mix. At that point Isaiah Thomas had definitely kicked three of the biggest players in the league right in the nuts...and it was still fresh.

  • @Onetigerl
    @Onetigerl 2 дня назад +3

The very fabric of the Olympics is competition yes, but the competition backbone is sportsmanship. You do not send someone to represent your country who exhibits poor sportmanship qualities which Isiah did. Most reactors miss the part about the Olympic committee making the ultimate decision in not selecting him. It wasn't just MJ. Scottie didn't want him on the team either but the final selection process was the committee's decision so props on catching that. There's a short Larry Bird video that has over 3 million views titled "The Best Larry Bird REVENGE Story Ever Told" about him and Bill Laimbeer. Larry literally had hate for that guy and watching that video you can see why. Plus the revenge part is satisfying. Great reaction.

Not only did Thomas egg on his teammates to go after guys in ways that literally could have ruined their careers but he agreed with Rodman saying that “if Bird were black he’d just be another dude.” When asked about Magic’s sexual preference he kind of insinuated things and then of course ducking off the court earlier. That doesn’t even count “The Freeze Out Game.”

    • @NC-Mama-Bear
      @NC-Mama-Bear 2 дня назад +2

That's what I was coming on here to say. Isiah egged on Bill Laimbeer, who purposely went after Larry's broken back. And did Bill ever pay for it. I still remember the refs standing with their arms folded while Bird beat Bill to a pulp. As Kevin McHale said, "He deserved it." To this day, Laimbeer has no remorse for purposely hurting players.

A Drem Team doesn't need a guy who couldn't hit the backboard attempting a free throw. They had guys who could rebound AND score AND not make racist comments every time they get smoked by a slow white guy.

His shooting was very cold. He looked disinterested. Very disappointing. Yet we find out that when he wanted to prove himself when Magic challenged him in practice, he showed everybody he's the new sheriff in town. But not int he games themselves. It was Charles Barkley who emerged as the most effective player of the Dream Team. By far. They would actually have been in trouble against a couple of teams without him!

Watch "Miracle" - the documentary of the USA Olympic Gold Medal win in hockey at Lake Placid (NY), USA. It is considered the greatest USA sports accomplishment in history. The reason being - the Soviet Union had won 4 consecutive Olympic Gold medals with a team that, by all accounts (except the Soviets') was made up of professionals. They dominated the hockey world like no other team had ever done. Team USA that year, like all others before, were made up entirely of college and university players. Coach Herb Brooks taught this team to play a new style of hockey that could not only compete with, but actually beat the Russians. It is the most inspirational story in US sports history. Like Herb Brooks, Chuck Daly was able to take a group of the most talented individual players on the planet and mold them into a cohesive unit that actually played unselfish, team basketball. The reason why the "Dream Team" was so revered was the way they played together. Magic and Bird set the tone, and MJ was the undisputed team leader. But everyone on that amazing roster contributed to a string of resounding wins the likes that will never be seen again in our lifetimes!

"Isiah Thomas was not selected for the "Dream Team" in the 1992 Olympics primarily because of a strained relationship with Michael Jordan, with many believing that Jordan's influence led to Thomas' exclusion from the team due to their past rivalries and a particularly contentious playoff series where the Detroit Pistons, led by Thomas, were perceived to have acted poorly against the Bulls, including not shaking hands after a loss; this is widely considered the main reason for Thomas being left off the team despite his impressive basketball career."

Deserving or not NOBODY wanted Isaiah Thomas in the team, not just Jordan!! If he would have been on the team there's no way they would have been as great as they were because of the toxic energy that came with Isaiah Thomas!!! Whereas skills and abilities are concerned Isaiah Thomas was possibly the best PG in the NBA at the time but the toxic negativity he was saddled with made him the worst option of all of the greatest players!! It sucks for Isaiah Thomas for sure but the only person to blame for that was himself because his ego took a gut punch because the city of Chicago loves Jordan more than they did and do Isaiah Thomas even though Thomas was born and raised in Chicago!!! So his ego cost him a spot on the Dream Team so people need to quit blaming the NBA (especially Jordan)!! Nobody told Isaiah's sensitive ass to start trying to end Jordan's, Bird's or any of the other greats careers!! Nobody told Isaiah's sensitive ass to tell his team to walk off of the court before the game was over because Jordan's Bulls finally beat the Pistons and not just beat them but swept the Pistons!!! That's why they left him off the team!!! It was himself (not Jordan) that blocked him from being in that team

Bill Laimbeer was looking to INJURE his opponents. That was not a different style of play, or playing physical. It was cheating, and it was playing with the livelihood of these players. And they took that personally. Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer were super dislikable despite Isiah's immense talent. Mahorn was a Karl Malone type who flirted at the edge of being dirty but it was tough to tell as he was just big and strong. Rodman was really good at defense and didn't need to be dirty. On the other side of the spectrum, John Sally had a fun personality and Joe Dumars was a gentleman. Not all Pistons had a bad reputation.

I'm enjoying your reactions to these documentaries. Please accept this suggestion for you to consider. I'm not sure why you're breaking up these videos. I know, at least for me, I'd rather see you reaction at one time. If, for some reason, it benefits you to break them down into these short videos, please consider uploading them all at the same time so us viewers can finish watching the whole reaction. And, if that's not something you want to do, perhaps at least title them so we know that this is not a full reaction. Maybe "Reaction 1 of 4" or something. That way, we don't watch the reaction and it just ends and the next part (which we don't know if it will be the rest of the reaction or how many more you will be breaking them into), is not uploaded yet. So, we end up waiting days to watch one reaction.
Again, I really would hate if this is taken wrong, I'm just trying to express frustration from this viewers point of view. To have to maybe have your second or third or fourth video of the same reaction come up on my feed or remember that "oh yeah, I was watching that great reaction....I should try to find the next one he did", is something that may not happen.
I'm sure some people like shorter videos but, again at least for me, if I am sitting down to watch a reaction to a documentary, I know it will be longer. And, if I only have 20 minutes, I'll just stop it and come back to it. But again, if it helps your RUclips metrics to do several videos, please at least upload them at the same time so we can just watch back to back or title them so we know how many there are (and how many of those are uploaded) before we commit to watching. It's more fun to watch your great reactions at one time rather than breaking that over the course of several days.
Just my opinion and I hope it comes across as intended. Again, love your attitude and reactions and your channel very much.

Look up the brawl with Barkley and Lambeer a couple years prior when Barkley was still with the 76ers. In that game, Isiah Thomas swings several times at Rick Mahorn's face. And Mahorn holds him back with one hand while holding the ball in the other, smiling the whole time. Isiah was a prick.

Isaiah always loved Larry, and Larry had no beef with him. Michael never said he wouldn't play with Isaiah. The only really dirty player was Lambeer . Trying to deliberately injure opponents is beyond despicable. They all know they'll get hit during games, but Lambeer never left a game without seriously injuring players in ways that weren't the typical elbow or hard hit. He aimed to land on ankles, and piled on if a players fell on a foul, pretending he'd fallen accidently as well. This is what Isaiah encouraged. Lambeer actually broke Isaiah's ribs with a cheap shot just before Isaiah was set to retire. Karma. The best players, especially if teammates, got together after retirement and showed up at the same events. Think anyone ever bothered with Lambeer after he retired? Think he was offered endorsements or was idolized by fans? Guess that's his karma.

Isiah wasn't even the one that SHOULD have made it. He wasn't even all NBA that year. If anything, it should have been Tim Hardaway. Zeke wasn't even third team all NBA that season or the season prior. The media and Isiah himself are the only reason that's an issue, IMO.

Regardless of Isaiahs talent. The Dream team needed to be comprised of not only the most talented players but also players that would be good ambassadors for the US. And the way that Isaiah ( and the Pistons) snubbed his nose not only at other players and teams but the NBA itself in the way that they played and thir "sportsmanship " ( ie, walking off the court before the game was over ) did not bode well for him being chosen as an ambassador to represent the US....

John Stockton was very arguably a better PG than Thomas at that time. And Daly knew that Zeke would be a distraction and divisive player after all that went down with Larry, Magic, and others not long before that. You're looking at this from a distance. At the time, it was the correct call, by his own coach. There are multiple articles in newspapers and magazines of the time addressing this. Isiah needs to stop playing the victim. He knows full well that Bird saved his career with that joint press conference Larry gave to say, "I don't care what he said." But he also said the distraction of having to deal with the fallout of Dennis's and Isiah's comments likely cost him his last chance at a championship. Magic was gracious to forgive him at all. And Thomas WAS a dirty player. He enjoyed stirring the pot and paid for it.

Saying the rest of the world “was not caught up” is an inaccurate narrative. Basketball has been an Olympic sport since 1936. Looking at the rosters of the top teams in 1992, they look a lot like the top teams from 2024 in terms of star leadership and talent. The 92 Dream Team was just that good, and in their primes except for Bird really.
Not a lot of foreign players in the NBA? There were a lot of different reasons for that in the 80’s into the 90’s, lack of skill was not the primary reason. There were less teams, 12 man rosters (not 18 like today). No internet for scouting,Cold War politics.
Two people just as examples: Arvydas Sabonis was drafted in 1986 but didn’t go to the NBA until 1995. Toni Kukoc was drafted in 1990 but didn’t go until 1994.
Both of these guys competed in the 92 Olympics but were not NBA players at the time.

The Dream Team didn't need Zeke. Zeke is better than Stockton. But they chose Stockton and harmony over Zeke and his rifts with Bird, Jordan and Magic. Zeke was the ring leader of a very tough and very dirty team. Questioning Magic Johnsons sexuality rather than showing concern for his friend was the last straw. Bird cried and returned Magics call and behaved like a friend. Zeke called Magics agent and was more concerned if Magic was gay, rather than offering any support. Why do they need to honor Zeke and risk chemistry issues. It's one thing to play tough and another to try to injure people. I don't think anyone wanted Zeke on the team. There was a lot of ignorance surrounding the virus at the onset. By 1991 Zeke should have known better than to believe the virus was only transferable between two men and if he was a real friend even that shouldn't matter. Zeke got what was coming and he was left off the team.

If you want to build the best team you can get you need players that you think you can form into a unit. You probably can´t do that with one of the most hated players in the league and everybody in charge knew. Besides, I have Isiah on my all time top 5 point guard list but he is neither above Magic or Stockton, so that decision to leave him out was fine on two accounts.

Some countries like the communist countries didn't necessarily count their players as pros because their government paid them.
Think about this. If Isiah had been on the team, people could have said he was given favoritism by his coach. And to be honest, I think the bad boy Pistons could also be a little of the reason why the rules were changed later. And I am not against the Pistons. They were my father's favorite team probably because we live in Michigan. Laimbeer was hated by a lot of players for good reason and he didn't care. He had absolutely no regrets or conscience for damaging people on purpose. Like causing Parish to sprain his ankle on at least one occasion.
