When doctor who was created by Mr. newman, he wanted it to be about people who travle in time to see history. he wanted no robots or BEMs (Bug eyed monsters). Eventually he gave in and the show became what it is today, but no show runner has forgotton about Mr. Newmans vision.
His vision was flawed so people should ignore it.... if he had disregarded bug eyed monsters and stuck to mostly historical stories, the show would have died a death in the early days...
Something that’s always somehow done right is picking the actor for the historical figure. If you just watch each one you’ll believe it’s actually them
@@lucasheap each to their own. For me a good historic has to be JUST historical, like the episodes shown back in the 60s or blend history well with an alien protagonist. None of these stories did that for me.. rosa would have been better as a stand alone historical drama, the inclusion of sci fi was pointless and poorly done, the baddie was a poorly written, badly acted cardboard villan who's sole drive was racism (really!?? As if.. sigh) the music was, as usual, DREADFUL, every time rosa appeared there was a cheesy little fan fare and every time the plastic baddie appeared, a little 2 note jaws theme type sound, EVERY TIME! It was beyond cheesy in fact.... it was badly paced and badly acted ( the actress playing rosa was the standout however)... the other stories u mention (haven't the time to go into detail) had pacing and the usual acting problems for me, punjab was particularly boring, the Tesla episode had by far the best character (tesla) whom I thought actually would have made a great doctor who, but with this one, the scorpion queen was a cardboard cut out, pantomime villan.... I just think, on the whole, the characters in this era are just so badly drawn and acted and un engaging... for comparison, if u look at the Shakespeare character in the 3rd season, he's just so "fun" , well acted and written, he makes u smile but can deliver pathos and straight moments too... he's engaging... or look at how the pompeii episode blended a fun alien baddie with a genuine reason to be there (not just a hatred of italians) with history, and ended with a genuinly tearful choice for the tardis team and sad ending with great gravitas from the 2 main leads... each to their own as I said, but for me, the historicals in this era have only been marginally better than the dreadful sci fi episodes... (ps I did however like the atmosphere of the frankenstein episode...)

It has such an unnuanced look on racism and every racist character is comically evil, aswell as the doctor once again having awful morals and being genuinly stupid in how to employ the help of the fam. Sending out ryan to do so much in a city that hates him for his skin color was idiotic. His scene with martin luther king was cute, but its all of these little ok things in a big pile of garbage. Its such a bad episode and I dont get how it gets the same amount of praise as Demons of the Punjab.
