It's unfortunate he had conflicts with some of those in charge making it an uncomfortable working environment for him. He was invited back for cameos before but turned them down. It would have been fantastic to have gotten Eccleston rather than Tennant for the upcoming 60th special (Tennant has already had several specials including the 50th) which would have been something special given he was there for the series reboot.

I think Capaldi gave a wonderful mix of anger, kindness, courage, dry humor, self-sacrifice, and a little bit of romance with Clara (even though he wasn't a hug person LOL) At the end of his cycle, the character was mature, powerful, still with doubts but strong enough to fight for what he considered right. His solo episode is one of the most powerful in the whole series and a challenge to the actor himself. He should be in the top 3 list.

I grew up with this show. My dad sat down my brother and I for Christopher Eccleston’s first episode telling us this was a show from his childhood, and we’ve never looked back.
As much as I loved Eccleston, David Tennant was my Doctor. His wild enthusiasm, his perfect emoting, just about everything from his era (although looking back there was way too much romantic emphasis between him and Rose) was everything to me. Saturday nights for 13 weeks a year gave me an escape from school I needed, and for that I’ll never be grateful enough.

I feel like Capaldi doesn't get enough love. Yes, he had a bit of a rough start in his first season, but quickly improved himself for the latter 2, and in my opinion delivered the best season of the new series in season 9. Going from the youngest actor to one of the oldest, showing the age and wisdom and weariness of the millenia-old alien who's probably lived too long. And the 2-part zygon episode in season 9 alone being my absolute favorite story, and being the one to close River Song's story in the best way! He deserves his high spot

I actually think he was the worst of the new doctors (controversial I know!). Capaldi is a good actor, the character is cool, but he just isn't the doctor. There is an episode where he literally tells a child they aren't special (the doctor would NEVER - to quote 10; "I've never met anyone who isn't special"), he is constantly calling Clara fat and ugly, and he is generally unpleasant to everyone around him. I understand the concept of his nasty personality being part of a growth thing - but honestly, I didn't care for that. We saw a nasty, anger-filled Doctor with 9 and in my opinion, that was way more true to who the Doctor is as his core. Capaldi felt too far from the Doctor imo.

When 7 had to tear down Ace to get her to stop believing in him by telling her he didn't care for her and how useless she was her devastated reaction tore my heart out. It's one of the only times I really felt like that in Doctor Who (the Rose being stuck in another universe stuff did nothing for me). She was an orphan and The Doctor was all she had. I don't remember the specifics of the episode but remember he had to do it to save her life.

A question that (probably) will never be answered: Would either Hartnell or Troughton be ranked differently if the entirety of their catalogue as The Doctor was available?
For those who don't know, the BBC had an utterly annoying policy of taping over any number of their old shows (not just "Doctor Who") as a cost-cutting measure. Many of the shows from the first two Doctors suffered this fate and the only reason we have as many episodes of them as we do is courtesy of video and/or film copies that have shown up in various places around the world.

    • @wallacewallaby5782

It's hard to rank something you can't see, and it's a shame. At least there's audio of most of them even if the video no longer exists.
The 2nd Doctor and Jamie were a great duo. The only think I curse the 2nd Doctor for is the introduction of the Sonic Screwdriver, although back then it was used specifically AS a screwdriver rather than the magic wand it is now.

His final story also showed him as the most selfless of Doctor's as he gave his life to save one person rather than saving the galaxy like many of the others, loved his speech in the Caves of Androzani when he was bringing down the spaceship as you could hear genuine panic in his voice.

While I do think RTD DID go a little overboard by having him need to kiss literally every young female companion (to be fair, it still grated on me less than how heavily Moffat tended to sexualize Matt Smith), I always loved his more human take on the role. Imo Ten was the most broken version of the Doctor. He was tormented by guilt and regret, and ultimately just wanted a place to belong. I really resonated with his tragic character arc.
All that said, I also LOVE Eccleston and Capaldi's versions of the character, and I haven't watched all the Classics at this point, but of what I've seen so far, I'm a fan of the Patrick Troughton and Sylvester McCoy.

Whereas during the 1970's especially, you have great writers, depth and development of characters, superb acting, and just great stories all around(many of them with powerful social commentary). And lastly, I don't think any of the modern actors to play the Doctor can touch Tom Baker or even Jon Pertwee. They don't call it the "golden era" for nothing, ya know.

Tom Baker is the definitive Doctor. Youth will always pick Tennant but Baker is legend

I don't know why some younger people can't or rather won't watch the classic series. They are missing out. I don't get it. I know what quality is and it has zero to do with when something was made. Many of my favorite films and tv shows come from before I was born. Many of my favorite albums are from before I was born. It's about quality and substance.

9th is my doctor, I knew about the older show but when the reboot came out I loved it and I wouldn't of been such a big fan without the 9th

Love the Rankings. Not sure I agree with some of the lower ranked doctors but I definitely put Tom Baker and David Tennant at the top. Although either one could go 1 & 2.

I feel Tennant, Baker and Smith should all share the top spot. But I give extra kudos to Smith for following on from Tennant when everyone thought he would be on to a loser. What a performance he gave!

The one thing is that Big Finish polished the Sixth Doctor very well.
