  • I know this is something that we never want to think about. But with children being naturally curious, and learning behaviours from what they are see on TV and online, they do things that they don't fully understand - this is more common than you think.
I've interviewed Dr. Sophie King-Hill on this podcast, who's a leading researcher on this topic to help us understand more.
    Sophie's bio
Sophie is an Associate Professor in the Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham. She specialises in sexual behaviours and first point assessment in children and young people, sexual health, controversial issues and teenage parents.

Well done, Jeremy, for broaching another topic in front of your audience that no one likes to think about.
I feel we have a long way to go before the child who has been harmed would disclose the abuse during childhood, yet Dr Sophie's words were heartening to hear. Work is being done. The attention given to educating practitioners in response to what they've shared about their shortfalls in confidence, resources or knowledge will be helpful.
I agree with Maria Socolof's comments.
My older brother wasn't naturally curious; he did know what he was doing. In the 1970s, his porn came in the form of stolen magazines during his paperboy run. He groomed our mother into thinking he was responsible enough to be left in charge of his three younger siblings. He abused me for four years. Childhood in my family home was not fun or safe.

Thank you for addressing this hidden taboo. It is so important that we bring light to sibling sexual trauma (sibling sexual abuse, sibling incest, harmful sexual behavior between siblings).
Lots of valuable information was discussed. I just want to note that from a survivor’s perspective, classifying the behavior on a spectrum often minimizes our experience because even “inappropriate“ behavior by a sibling can be (and I would argue most of the time is) traumatic. I would also argue it is abusive as well… an abuse of boundaries, an abuse of trust, and most likely an abuse of power. But whether or not it’s considered abuse, more importantly, from the survivors perspective, it was traumatizing.
I understand that when working with the children who harmed, it might be helpful to understand the spectrum, so it has value, but in the correct contexts.

Jeremy asks great questions and this podcast has lots of helpful info. Note that there are online support groups for parents as well as survivors and supporters. The nonprofit 5WAVES has links and lots of info on this topic.

I agree, also a survivor of sibling abuse. I also worked with teenage abusers and in my experience it was common for them to continue abusing women and children.

I was sexually abused by a sibling as a child and he used pornography during the abuse. Happy to talk to Sophie.
