    I really want this to start a trend of using 2x120mm coolers on GPUs. It doesn't have to be for an expensive noctua collaboration. It sounds like even average-quality 120mm fans would offer a large improvement over the current GPU cooler situation. Enthusiasts have been modding their cards to do this same thing for years now, it's time for graphics card manufacturers to get the hint and start offering this out of the box.

    • @FutaNoKami
      @FutaNoKami 2 года назад +20

      Would love that too, but i think mainly the issue would be ask and demand. Or the practicality of it. As DerBauwer mentioned in his last video, its a quad slot GPU so you wouldnt be able to use a e.g. wifi card/bluetooth, or USB card etc in your PCIE slots. To make it a marketable item i suppose they should reasearch a actuall % of people that actually use PCIE accesories and look if its worth the effort. But then again... possibly a PCIE riser and vertical mount in a wide case might just do the job too.

    • @zig131
      @zig131 2 года назад +7

      Totally although I would want horizontal fins rather than vertical so the hot air is pushed out the case rather than into the motherboard and side panel. Vertical fins may be better for the GPU itself but it's just straight up selfish to dump it's heat into the case like that.

      It took Noctua 20 something years to design a 200mm fan that lived upto their standards for material composition, flex, sound etc. Consider this pairing with a 3070 as a rush job with that redesigned heatsink. If they'd have had 4-5 years to come up with the perfect heatsink to match the A12x25 fans, I'd expect it'd do somewhat better than it already does. Just throwing 120mm fans on a heatsink doesn't necessarily mean it'll actually perform better than what's already there if the heatsink isn't optimized for the differences between the fans capabilities.

      There is a ton of things to PCs that I really don't understand. For this issue, it has a lot of things going against it. The slot used for the GPU is typically the first one, and going with a cooler that need 6 slot width to function, like this Asus-Noctua thing, the rest of the slots become unusable. There is no tradition in the industry to shake things up, to keep flexibility while supporting new hardware. Also, using these fans, there is a height limitation in a lot of cases, that prevent this design from being usable. It sort of reminds me about the turtle speed adoption of the dropping of the 5.25" bays.

    If an AIB partner were to offer a model with standard 2x 120mm x25mm fan mountings, it would be disruptive. The biggest differentiators between AIBs (that allow them to upcharge massively between SKUs) are the cooler, power delivery, and BIOS. Standardizing the cooler would commoditize that biggest differentiator, potentially hurting profits. All the AIBs are completely selling through their stock, and they have a supply bottleneck with NVIDIA, so I don’t see much of an economic motivation for incumbents to disrupt here. right to repair means that if a part is broken or something is damaged in a product you bought, you can take the product to any repair shop to be repaired or if you want to do it by yourself without being forced to do it the manufacturer way
      the old fans are on sale on internet, you can replace them by unplugging or unscrewing the old unit and installing the new one
      itx cases will not be able to fit this solution, the gpu is 4 slots, at best, a itx will fit 3 slots gpus if you are lucky so this will work for atx users only, external gpu cases might or might not fir one
      the fans on any gpu can be removed and replaced with this type of fan, you can even use zipties to put a traditional fan if you have the space, the plastic part can be unscrewed on many gpu models if not all, i even did it on a gt 1030!
      where your right to repair is being destroyed is on iphones, latest model will not allow you to change a single part, all has to be done by apple directly

    this kind of design also reduces e-waste by making it easier to swap fans if one happens to break. Of course replacing a fan on a gpu is possible for any model but the barrier to entry is important, and it's also a lot easier to buy a normal 120mm fan than an oem gpu fan that isn't generally sold to the public

    Another review of the Asus Noctua 3070 mentioned that the temps all over the card were excellent. Like the backplate was just above room temp. (I think it was Jayz2Cents.) ... When compared to the temps of the back of some cards which you can barely touch because they get hot. Outstanding cooling.

    With my previous asus 1070 card, all fans died. They died so fast I did not trust them anymore so I just zip-tied some 12cm fans to it. Performance, cooling and noise levels improved by a LOT. Never understood why they didn't come with bigger fans.

    Just wait till Major Hardware finally makes a series on different GPU fan designs by fans (Fan Showdown)! It's gonna be wild!
    I also agree with the majority of comments that this kind of design should become the norm, since fans are one of the first thing to fail and having easy access to a replacement instead of having to hunt for an exact match (if at all possible to replace) would be amazing. Not to mention being able to pick and choose whether you want to go performance, or silence or RGB or any mix of the above.

    Sooner or later, there should be a standard for all GPU so we can use 3rd party mounting and fans which is way more superior than the stock fan and heat sink of the GPU.

      Just go water and be done with it.
      if you hold onto hardware long it will always last, if you upgrade every gen your previous gen card with coverall will still sell for a good price, premium over anything with air cooler because smart buyer will know card has had much easier time thermally. Rads,plumbing and pump/s last ages. Ive found fan lifespan longer on rads as well, i always run them pull so rad acts like a good filter. Im slack and pullfdown for flush and remove fans clean etc every 2-4 years and ive still got fans that run perfect after 7+ years. Dont think ive ever had a case/heatsink fan survive that long, ever! Even on cases with good intake filters that i used to clean regularly, always bought high end fans.

    For those whom don't have room for such a high slot card, it wouldn't be that hard to use a shroud designed for use with 15mm fans like the A12x15 instead of the A12x25, especially on mid-range cards like the 5700xt or 3060. Just being able to easily replace/swap gpu fans is awesome, should have been done years ago.

    I can really see some manufacturers, or at least ASUS continue this trend since the reduced noise levels is pretty good along with thermals too. Even if you price the "Air-Block", as similar to waterblock, the advantages of reduced noise levels without going full water-cooling, will probably draw some enthusiast in, especially in SFF space where any reduction in DBA will be helpful.
    Also, with GPU consuming more and more power, this solution will probably be needed to keep bulk down, before thickening or lengthening the heatsink.

    I like the way that it's more modular; so if a fan fails it's easy to replace, or if the GPU dies or becomes obsolete I'd still be able to easily repurpose the fans.
    I do think they could probably shave some extra width off the card if they changed the way the fans are mounted. If the fan shroud over the top was omitted and instead the fans were held on by being either mounted to a simple metal plate between the fans and cooler, or a set of bent wire spring clips as many CPU coolers use to mount their fans.

    Also of note, Noctua did announce a Chromax Black version of the A12x25 a couple weeks ago. So that'll be an option in the future, literally same exact fan design, just in black.
