- Navajo Grandma Tells a little known story of How the Navajo Taco Came to Be. As a child Navajo Grandma recalls her Grandfather's conversations with her Grandmother and retells us the little known story of how the Navajo Taco came to be.
If you'd like to know more about the History of Frybread please watch the Previous Videos for more.
I was making your frybread today anywho, but I just had to tell you that the Navajo Taco has officially just made it to Darwin Australia 😁 My Taco world has forever been changed and I will think of you always when I make them. Thank you again Navajo Grandma, blessings and health and love to you 🥰
You put a smile on my husband's face as he is from Brisbane. Yes, I sleep with an Aussie. Hahaha, he is a kind soul. Your comment made us so happy. Love you. Navajo Grandma
Just made it to Central Victoria tonight. Going to try it tomorrow.
My next videos will involve defining myself, a sober one, then excitedly moving towards Grandma shearing a sheep for you all. This is an opener with videos on the weaving loom, rugs, carding and spinning dowel with weaving accessories. Its getting exciting to learn more about Dine' textile. Please watch and learn. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
I will! 👏🏼
I would love to see Navajo Grandma create a children's book, "How the Navajo Taco Came to Be". The way that she tells it is very similar to a creation story, how the Earth came to be, how to man, the Diné came to be! Such a great story!
Great suggestion! I will put that on my list. Thank you for believing in my videos. Thank you for subscribing. Love to you from Navajo Grandma
I agree a children’s book would be Awesome 👍❤️
ayóo anííníshní Grandma! Your enthusiasm is infectious. I absolutely love your teachings and how you share your wisdom with us.

You are so welcome. Keep watching and learning with joy. Navajo Grandma
Soooo yummy! You are awesome Navajo Grandma! Thank you for your stories, your beautiful song, and recipes! It's amazing and very fascinating how similar Mexican and Navajo food is! Tacos originate from Mexico. The "taco" predates the arrival of the Spanish in Mexico. There is anthropological evidence that the indigenous people living in the lake region of the Valley of Mexico traditionally ate tacos filled with small fish. We are indeed brothers and sisters! A lot of us Mexicans/Mexican Americans are native too, descendants of many indigenous tribes from Mexico and even some here in the US.❤🌮😍✊🏽
You are one smart cookie Adriana, as Grandma is a Native American ancestral genealogy researcher with my only competitor who is your well renown Ancestry.com. Yes you are indeed correct with the food and different locations where indigenous people lived in Mexico and South America. The ones we are very familiar with are the Pascua Yaqui Indians from the area of Sonora, Durango in Mexico. Their story is incredible like most native stories, which is they would not bow to the Mexican gov't, and were given a reservation in which they gathered, but it also made it easier for the Mexican gov't to come upon them and made them slaves for the gold and other mining they had or to work in the fields with hand labor. Many died,, etc. Finally around 1920 many fled to Arizona where some politicians helped them become Federally Recognized. Funny how they are now very stingy to allow other Yaqui into their circles who are trying to get enrolled as well. Its a filthy sad stingy way to treat your own people but what's new right? I think they should take away their Federal Recognition status denying others of their people the help they need, as the same reason they freely got their Recognition without any proof but because way back then in the 1970's they needed help and it was given them. Sad we don't remember these things and help our own people. Pretty sick. Navajo Grandma
I see where I got my good singing skills (and humor from😁) mom!❤
Hi my Sunshine, thank you for complimenting your mother, your Navajo Grandma, hahaha. I still have your birthday present. Love you son. Hugs always. Mom
@blueBeanieboos TV Yes this lady is his mother. My first son whom I call "Sunshine," he is my heart. I love him so much. He is a lawyer, incredible college practically law professor and full of incredible intelligence and the best golfer. He and his brother go on the golf course in the middle of winter, dig a 4 foot area of snow out of the way, and hit bright red or green golf balls and probably retrieve them and start again. They are incredible golfers. Yup, my son. Navajo Grandma

The history is very interesting and informative. It's important to have someone like yourself telling the stories and keeping the knowledge going on to the next generation. I love your humor.
Hi David, yes, you are right, we have thru history had the white guy speaking about our culture, it was high time for grandma to tell her Dine’ culture to retain truly what whom we are. Really it’s all for my posterity but as your grandma, it’s good for you too. Hugs. Great comment. Navajo Grandma
Making your frybread today gonna top it with jamaican oxtail and beans. I love what you do and its so cool to see it spread around the world
Wow what a meal with frybread. It's full of carbs but never mind an amazing meal you are making!!! Wow!! Navajo Grandma
Navajo Grandma, you look stunning in red with your torquoise jewelry!! I love fry bread tacos. I had them for the first time in Cherokee NC. Now I know the history too!
Laura Ellen, what kinds words of Hozho you gave to grandma, thank you. Glad you went to Cherokee, NC, I was amazed as we went there and worked near there for months and saw how the Cherokees have their set up to see how they existed, their basket making, and cultural grounds. Awesome. I wish to do that one day. I want to have some hogans people can sleep in and see what it was like when I was a child, wake up early, have prayer with corn pollen, eat like we did on the floor on a picnic cover and to go and sheep herd and experience how I lived. I desire for that. I can only see it coming to fruition one day. Navajo Grandma
That is a wonderful idea and I hope my Navajo Grandmother sees her dream come to fruition!! How I long for the old days....
I’m not Navajo, I’m Mexican American but this looks delicious. I tried Navajo tacos for the first time at a Pima Rez. It was also my first time at the Rez and I kid you not I thought I was at a family gathering. The resemblance of the people looked just like my tios, tias and mom!
"We are one family!" I am so happy to hear your experience and yes, so much we have in common and when it comes to food--it's comforting and like home. Great comment and thank you again. Hugs from Navajo Grandma
Thank you so much for showing us how to make the Navajo taco and telling us about its interesting history, along with frybread in general. I tried to make some tonight and although not perfect, ( I need lots of practice) I think it turned out pretty good. Thanks, Navajo Grandma!

The 60s were my favorite years too! Thank you Grandma, liked and subbed. Boy I'm hungry now...
Well you will need to try some Navajo Tacos and make it for yourself. Talk about the 60's and on --A long time ago in my teens, my friends and I were driving during the night in the reservation, noticed a fire, an old looking car, one guy playing a guitar with a bout 15 bottles of whiskey he had finished. We asked if we could help him. He just smiled, he stood up and was tall, he was a hippie of course, we talked to him, he sang us a song he helped write he said, it was called, "Light My Fire." It was beautiful, he had a really amazing voice, almost intoxicating, just raw and beautiful. He said the song he was to sing to us would one day become a huge hit. He said his name was the Lizard King. My friend laughed and said, do you ever choke your lizard? It was so stupid because that's what the guys would say when they had to use a bathroom. Jim said, man I would never choke my lizard. We laughed and laughed because of what our definition was. We sat and talked with him until about almost 5am, he was still singing, drinking and I still can't believe his voice, it just got better by the hour. When we had to go, we told him we go driving because my dad is a policeman and we don't drink. Of course my cousin did drink some with the guy Jim. He also wore a beautiful concho belt with turquoise rings. My cousin asked him if he was trying to be an Indian. Jim said, he was not but would love to be and had great respect for them. He was really awesome. When leaving we all shook hands with him, he gave me a hug and told me to keep the guys in line and I said, yup. My friend I found out who liked me was my 1st cousin after he died. He always held my hand and would kiss me now and then. I was always scared of him, we stayed friends all our lives. He died of cirrhosis of the liver. Sad. But, the end of the story is, the guy told us his name was Jim Morrison, but we called him the Lizard King. Weird we thought cuz we figured it was the alcohol talking. Later that year, Light My Fire became the #1 hit and yup we almost fainted as it was the same guy we had spent hours talking to and listening to his songs while he drank 90 proof whiskey and some probably pure alcohol. Crazy. We were hippies, I hope you were. A story tucked in my heart of heartstrings of yesteryear as a teen Dine' hippie. Almost went to Wood Stock, thank goodness we didn't go. Some hippies had a school bus picking up all kinds of people. We saw the bus in the pictures at Wood Stock and laughed our heads off. Crazy but wonderful years of yesteryear. More stories of Janis Joplin and Jimmie Hendricks too. Amazing. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma yup, part of me is still a hippie. I think I always will be. Hugs back atcha nice lady, I loved that story. Thank you for telling it.
Hi Grandma , great singing . learned something today about the 2 good Friends who started off the NAVAJO tacos. Love them any Day um feeling Hungry lol Thanks for sharing
Yes and I am so grateful for these two wonderful men who were friends and created this yummie concoction called fry bread. Glad you were able to watch and learn. Love you. Navajo Grandma
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I have actually been working on my genealogy and have found out that I'm indigenous only not from America. I come from the Sampi tribe which are the only indigenous people in Europe. I'm 65% Swedish. I'm on an amazing journey to learn about my culture. Thank you for the inspiration to want to know who I am and how amazing learning my heritage can be. I am from the Sampi nation from Sweden! They started the tradition of wearing what some call Elf shoes that curlers at the tips of the shoes to be able to wear with snowshoes. I'm becoming obsessed!! It's odd to look at the pictures and see myself reflected. I'm going to start trying some recipes I've found. Much love from California. We live where the Maidu tribe are from.
Sue did I tell you, there are others who are from the Sami Tribe, from Sweden, now I know how its spelled. I watched a video about this tribe. It was so interesting and such a beautiful cultural teachings that I fell in love with. You are not alone being Sampi, many are here who have shared this information. I would want to go there just to be in a place that so loves nature and all the housing and teachings are so amazing. As researchers we went to Sacramento area and helped some people become enrolled there. Now we have a beautiful woman who looks like Melania Trump just gorgeous who is Maidu and working on her information as well. Beautiful information about these different tribes. We worked out there with tons of rancheria tribes that were battling within due to throwing each other out of their own tribes for casino money. So very sad, we proved each case and the tribal leader just decided, so what if the information was correct, and never mind the BIA record information, so due to the sovereignty they throw around there, they say they have rights to throw anyone out of their tribes if they want. No one can help but I also hear now that something has been done about this, not sure. I pray things have gotten better for them. Love you. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma much love in return to you and your family. Be safe.

I grew up in Albuquerque with fry bread an essential State Fair treat and my mother making it from time to time for lamb stew or tacos. As an adult the fry bread seemed a strange food for a first nation tribe and I was right. It was so sad to learn how the fry bread came to be but I stand with the Dine who claim it as their suffering food and honor it as such. So do it. I never considered the tacos though. After all three distinct cultures living in each others' pockets to me putting taco ingredients on fry bread was a no brainer. Interesting hearing the story. I'm a new sub and about to get my own squash blossom necklace out of the drawer and wear it again as soon as I can go anywhere. Love your videos. Reminds me of home.
Kristen what an interesting life and the different experiences are wonderful with different views and culture. How exciting. The long walk was sad but paw, paw, paw, it is done and to never be allowed to repeat it ever. It made us stronger I hope, at least our family derived from it keeping records and appreciating life, freedoms and the wonderful Mother Earth who provides the food through the blessings of Father sky and God in Heaven. My full blooded Navajo wife makes the best fry bread, but it takes an act of God to get her to make it. Twice a year if I am lucky.
You are so funny. Well, think of it this way. She loves you and wants you to be healthy, and twice a year is more than enough. This stuff is made from the white man's portioned out food and it really is not healthy. We use to be until the handouts. So thank your wife for remaining healthy. LOL!! Hugs from Navajo Grandma

Kristin Wright, this is your life, your own choices, and you are at the helm of your own ship. Keep that clear and deep in your brain. Just because Navajo Grandma grew up doing things her way, you can take it and do it the way you want. By all means I have tasted it with yeast, but I myself do not like it. So to each his own. mexican coca cola is awesome to have with tacos ❤
That is what that bottle I had was. How did you know. Ha. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma grew up drinking it and i love it! ❤ 😁
Sooo delicious!!!! :) Wow. LOVED YOUR VIDEO and its history. I am having a hard time finding the yucca root for the shampoo ( I live in New Jersey). What other name will I be able to find it under? Is it the Yucca Excalibur adams needle plant?
Hi Sarah, it is known as Spanish Bayonet. I do not believe I have heard the Excalibur. The Spanish Bayonet grows in the Southwest, Navajo country. Thank you for watching and learning. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma Thank you so much for responding! :) I will be looking for it.
@@NavajoGrandma Hi so sorry to bother you again but I can not find any source to just buy the roots. I remembered you said that you would dry them and use them for later. I went on Etsy and put in the search engine Spanish Bayonet, yucca glauca etc and it didn’t help. I then typed in “ Dried Yucca Root” which options came up but it didn’t say if it was the dried Yucca root that we eat or the dried Yucca root for the shampoo. Again sorry to bother you.
@@AutumnSunflower I typed in "Yucca Shampoo powder" as that is probably the best to use naturally instead of the million shampoo that profess yucca. The powder is easier and you just get 1 or 2 cups water with 1 tablespoon of powdered yucca blend it together and use it. Hope this helps. Navajo Grandma
a person dot have a complete kitchen if they dont have FLOUR, LARD, ONIONS, GARLIC, CHILLIS, TOMATOES, and COCOA COLAS!! all the rest should all ready be in the pantry,
Hey yooper mann, "you just shouted THE TRUTH, and I am right here with both thumbs up in the air." Love your comments. Hugs. Navajo Grandma

admits to being a Fry Bread Addict.
So you are saying you are admitting to being a frybread addict? Talk about frybread, I have had tons of Natives yelling at me for making this Navajo Taco and promoting diabetes. Let's see, hmmmm. Well they lost. I promote Navajo Tacos but on a binge now and then. Never daily. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma I mean I haven't had it for a while that's why I've been trying learn to make it I'm also trying to find a way to make it in the air fryer as well. But then again no one should also be yelling at you for making a video bout the Navajo Tacos either. Interweb can be toxic at times. But I for one enjoy the videos.
@@niknack666 Well Andrew I am proud of you for trying to make frybread. It really is delicious with lots of different meats, eggs, bacon and spam, etc. Its such a versatile dough. You should try the Calzones. Whoa, just amazing!! I know what you mean about Natives yelling at me about the frybread, I just read them and remember I do have a "delete" button for those who are awful. So that's as much impression they make on Gma. Also forget about the "Airfryer." When this came out I had always dreamt of a way to make frybread with an airfryer. So we tried it so did a thousand other cooks, bakers, etc. None had any luck. Maybe if you try you might perfect it as none of us have. I was very disappointed. Oh well, here we go making it from scratch and trying again. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma I have seen some people try to attempt to make fry bread in an air fryer and it just doesn't turn out the same as when you cook it in oil it just doesn't have the crisp and or doesn't come out golden brown like it should.
@@niknack666 Doesn't work. Gma
Hey! Where’s the Pepsi! LOL!
Sorry just Coca Cola. Had a Pepsi last video. It is funny because REZ food is best with hard soda like Pepsi and Coca Cola. I will make sure we have those sodas out there for drinks during our food videos. But then Blue Mush somehow doesn’t sound good with either. Thanks for the laugh! Navajo Grandma
Where have you been all 52 years of my life?
My goodness that picture is scary enough to say, now I know why I have been somewhere else all your 52 years of your life. LOL! Thank you for watching and learning. I am sure you have tasted this Navajo taco, it is surely and truly wonderful. One thing for sure, "DO NOT GET ADDICTED! Not good!!" Smile grandma is joking. But do eat it sparingly. We are not young any more ya know. Hugs from Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma Thank you for such wonderful words I will let you know if I can get it cooked that way.
