Thanks so much Eric. On my way to the parts store to pick up a new fuel pump assembly for my 08 Silverado, and you probably saved me an extra trip for a lock ring… I’ll grab one while there. Just discovered your videos, and color me impressed. One tradesperson to another, you are an excellent journeyman/teacher. Please keep up the great work and continue educating us home mechanics that are trying to save a few bucks in labor. I generally don’t subscribe to channels, but I subscribed to yours, you’re my 3RD subscribe… EVER!
Nice to have a helper. I was like wtf, thats not Vanessa. lol You really don't see many women in technical stuff. I know one female engineer, and one electrician and a quality engineer/metalurgist And where i live is pretty much the last remaining concentration of the UK's engineering and manufacturing. A laid back shop dog is good. My mates dog chews his tools and trys to eat nuts and bolts when hes working on his old BMW.
Welcome to South Main Auto Vehicle Repair and Performance Upgrades via Weight Reduction! Because we remove a lot of rust and dirt when we fix your vehicle!
Another great video, clear, concise, and excellent production value. Nice glasses. When I did my fuel pump, for the same reason, a few months ago the top of the tank and lock ring was as dirty as this one. A tool that came in handy for the lock ring was the OTC 6599 Universal Fuel Sender Lock Tool. That tool with 1/2 inch breaker bar enabled me to very easily spin off and tighten the lock ring.
Awesome 👍 - right on about the prop shafts not needing a specific position , ha your the first master tech that did not mark the position. Also the two piece shafts are balanced independently and assembled with the centre hanger just prior to install, they are not shipped to the assembly plant in one assembly with the centre hanger . Lots of trany, wheel bases , and axle combos make it easier to do at the factory. Been a while since I put prop shafts on the trucks at GM but all the shafts do not require any orentiation. As you noted it's the cleaning of the contact points that most miss that cause a driveline vibration. Ha I still have guys telling me to put wood under my batteries stored on a concrete floor to prevent a discharge. Man you make the pump install look so easy but for a guy in the driveway get prepared to put a lot of money in the cuss jar :)
+Steve Rob Funny you mention the battery myth is still around. I still hear it as if batteries haven't advanced in the last 90 years. I also told someone how hard it was to replace a fuel pump assembly. They went and bought 4" hole saw and cut a hole right over the pump. Then installed a stainless steel plate over the hole. As some car makers actually do to gain access to the fuel pump. He was happy as a geeky child for his ingenuity. As it had taken a total 1.5 hrs for him to replace and 5 breaks included.
+Claude “Reviews4U” Rains Funny you mention that, my sister's 2000 Impala has an access hole in the trunk :) Just had to pull the pump because of that drinking straw look a like that joins the pump and fuel lines together. It wiggled it self right off! Chevy and other auto makers should have kept that as a convenience.
SATAMAN Schmidt Ha I like a guy with a good sense of humour, you crack me up. Your just perfect for an idea I got hatching for an upcoming channel . ILL put you front and centre :)
Sure is one of the best. Reason I just subscribed. Explains clearly through the whole process and mentions tools and methods for making repair go more smoothly. Good sense of humor as well.
HAHA with as many of these tanks ive droped in my day, i never ever ever take those strap bolts out with an impact if its more then 5 years old, i break em free and once there spinning ye then impact, if its a 2007 and older you better beleave i dont even touch an impact on them, those U-nuts are fucking junkkkkkkkkkkk, the newer trucks its wayyyyyyyyy easyer to drop the tank and they now have cut outs to access the clip when it breaks:) but personaly i find ford rust way worse then GM's, the pump module on them with the fucking 8mm bolts that seem to disapear over time... ya... never dropped a tank on a dodge so dunno whats up there
Sheesh man why don't they at least use some better galvanization on those. Cheap ass BS is what that is. That entire assembly is a magnet for rust the way they have it now.
Great work, Eric! Just replaced a seeping gas tank in my old MPV...it's on the third one now!! Fuel "module" is still 26-year old original, with a fresh pump just to be safe lol. I promise to swing by your shop and grab hose dusty video files one of these days. Got my ass kicked his week by a crank no-start "Acura from hell"...look for that case study to be up soon!
South Main Auto Repair I finally beat it into submission today...DAY 4 of the diagnosis. Makes our camshaft-twisting Hyundai look like a walk in the park lol no joke :) Part 1 should be up tonight!
what an excellent workman ship qualities Mr. O always thinking and waiting what the next one will be of a video so could learn more and what a little bar u used LOL thanks for sharing and good info as always.
Just stumbled across the first video with Hannah in it! "She is camera shy" oh how times changed though 😂 was not long before she was putting Eric in his place.
How bout Tipping the box , take out the left side & just loosen the right side , on plug the lights in the rear . I have GMC sierra 1/2 ton 4/4 and I pulled my box when I did mine .
Had to do the same module on my truck, without a lift. Can't figure out why they designed it that way- everything is plastic except the top of the module. That's what fails. Goofy.
Wow! Your vid was downloaded today, and had 875 views before noon!! You are youtube royalty, Sir Doctor of O! His Royal Repairer of Machines! Thanks for another great video!! P.S. It's not the number of videos, it's the quality! and you certainly do make quality videos!
I'm looking forward to going back at a automotive shop I'm not doing no more side work for people because they run out and it be light weight stuff I refuse to do be stuff unless the vehicle is at a shop.
You mark the shaft in relation to the yoke for one simple reason. In our business, if anything can go wrong it will. If it came in not vibrating then I put it back exactly like it came in just to eliminate one more possible reason why my boss can say that a customer complaint is my fault.
Hey man big thanks to ya for making this vid. I live in northern Michigan and changed the fuel pump on my 2000 Tahoe and this vid was a huge help. Especially using the air hammer to loosen things up. I don't think I would have had the balls to have tried that but holy crap did that save the day. I owe ya a beer or six. Thanks, Jay
Glad to see you wearing those glasses, while watching your videos there's not much for me to do except worry about your safety! Do what you want off camera.
as long as drive shaft its self is phased , or a one piece i never mark them. Surprised the ring was still in one piece . If line are real hard to remove , sometimes a squirt of lube seems to help them for me any how .
Awesome video Eric, nice to see girls in the shop too in the U.k it's very when I went collage out of a group of nearly 30 boys there was just 1 girl it would be good to see more in the industry. So good work Hannah! And Eric remember you keep posting, I'll keep watching!!
I pulled the bed on my Ranger when I replaced the fuel pump. Didn't want to mess with the straps and bolts holding the tank because of the amount of rust on them. Lisle makes a cheap tool for removing lock rings for fuel tanks. Just needed to remove the bolts and tip the front of the bed up and back so that I had access to the fuel pump.
Please tell me you get your Honda's underbelly coated! Just 6 years and that rusty... That is way worse than my 1992 Volvo was before I had mine coated :P
Great video. My van needs the fuel pump changed again. I have to get a new tank and another fuel pump. It damaged 2 pumps in 2 months. The mechanic suggested getting a new tank. But l do like the van, so, l have no choice. Is a 96 1500 Chevy high top convertion van, and the pump is exactly like the one on this Silverado you are working on..
I know it was 5' cause I've got a 4 footer and that one is bigger. I'm not sure what to think safety glasses and a cold chisel instead of a screw driver. WTH
@19:14 "Watch your face" I don't squint anymore when I hear this... Too used to being on the other end of the camera. I'm really gonna get it when someone standing next to me says it... And as long as I remember to do so, I anti-seize almost everything. Once a rusty bolt has been reinstalled without it, and re-rusts into place... it AIN'T NEVER coming back out in one piece.
Nice video - aerial shots and all. Gotta love a shop dog, they only react to the noise of their food bowl! It still bugs me to toss a working fuel pump when the "module" is shot.
ok Eric now ya got me scared . that 07 looks way less rusty than my 03 .. I already had the brake likes and fuel lines replaced. Now I gotta look forward to the fuel pump rusting apart. Im in Syracuse ny. my truck only has 65000 miles on it .
one time a fellow tech had a comback after doing a pump cuz it was leaking fuel. Turns out he didint have the line fully cliped on which i didnt know. i lowerd the tank to look a bit and had someone turn the key on and whamo line poped fully off and shot directly into my face but i was wearing safteys which im usually not
Nice to have a helper. I was like wtf, thats not Vanessa. lol You really don't see many women in technical stuff. I know one female engineer, and one electrician and a quality engineer/metalurgist And where i live is pretty much the last remaining concentration of the UK's engineering and manufacturing. Your a very good mechanic, but take it from a shade tree, use a little PB Blaster when dealing with your rusted components and wear hearing protection, or you will be deaf before you hit 55......Good Job....
Good video, I still can't get over the amount of rust on a 6 year old vehicle. When you were letting the truck down on the lift did I spot a Harbor Freight tool chest in a pro shop? Also nice of you to give a local youngster a summer job!
Briansmobile actually tilted the box without any damage. Quite impressive. I would love to see a door in the bed or cab floor. I guess that would be too easy for engineers to do. Engineers and mechanics gotta get together for coffee.
In response to the rear axle vent hose comment, I personally asked a former GM drivetrain test and design proofing technician / engineer about that. He said that in the mid 90s they located the vent hose up higher on the off road package trucks (ZR2, ZR5, etc) compared to 2wd and non off road package 4x4 trucks. Then in the midst 2000s anything 4x4 the vent ran up higher than 2wd, and in the last few years all the trucks 4x4 and 2wd all have the vent hose in the same place soley for ease of assembly and fewer different parts at the factory
Amazing your work to detail and the extra mile that you do you my friend have a new subscriber watched 2 videos I'm hooked best mechanical work I have ever seen 😎👍👍
I can remember what a pain the rust was when in lived in Vancouver BC Cars would evaporate before your very eyes. Now I live in Vegas there is never any rust on anything I have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer and it is completely rust free. I recently did a brake job on my truck and my brake lines looked like new.
Eric, do people oil spray their cars in your area? Here in Southern Ontario, if you want your car to last, you've got to get it oil sprayed annually. Keeps the underbody rust free.
I had to do a fuel pump on an F150 once that I had no other choice but to drop the tank. Some shop had put a body lift on the truck and welded steel blocks to the bed and the frame! I remember unbolting the bed and trying to raise the one side thinking WTF is going on.... till I lifted up the gap guard and saw it.
My son (Eli, he's 6) and I were watching this while putting some lego's together. We have skipped back to 5:21 about 57 times now. Funny stuff! I'm just getting into this trade and SMA has been my night school lately. Thanks Teach
You prolly dont give a shit but does someone know a trick to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would appreciate any help you can give me
@Rodney Edward Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process now. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I wish people could do that nice and easy and know what there doing down here in texas I wish I could do it my self so I can know I did a good job!! thank you for showing us a great job thank you

+DJDevon3 I thought the same thing.....5'? same diff. lol
Alfredo Pacheco Jr Gotta respect how big a man says his tool is. If he says it's 5' then it's 5'. :P
I had to laugh at that as well.
My thought exactly...lmao

THANKS!
Good job Hanna . Eric's new nick name is " Ivan the Hammer Putski " my favorite polish wrestler
Wow, there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Outstanding!
I'm so old I remember when U joints and control arms had zerk fittings.
I can relate to that! wasn't that grand?

Thanks for the great vid Mr Eric O.
I usually spray the ring with some kroil or pb blaster. Works on 20yo fords!
Suprised you did not lube spray the lock ring before you started? The fuel pump looks identical to my sons Honda Civic's!
You mark the shaft in relation to the yoke for one simple reason. In our business, if anything can go wrong it will. If it came in not vibrating then I put it back exactly like it came in just to eliminate one more possible reason why my boss can say that a customer complaint is my fault.

binnsh Worry wart!
Love it, “safety third”. Great channel, learnt a ton watching his channel.
I don't understand how the fuel doesn't get contaminated with so much rust and crust around the tank like that.....
Another fine job. I own a '99 GMC and bet a new fuel pump is in my future very soon indeed.
Stephen Malone Now your prepared!
Pretty snazzy safety glasses ya got there Eric O 😎 @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
as long as drive shaft its self is phased , or a one piece i never mark them. Surprised the ring was still in one piece . If line are real hard to remove , sometimes a squirt of lube seems to help them for me any how .

I really enjoy watching and learning car repairs. You do an awesome on explaining the steps
this is relatable for my wife, son and I! great video! Keep up the videos! if you see this, please reply back!
I pulled the bed on my Ranger when I replaced the fuel pump. Didn't want to mess with the straps and bolts holding the tank because of the amount of rust on them. Upallnight Yeah the rangers are nice with the box bolts right in the bed too
Another great vid. I see you have a production assistant now. Help with moving the tank, "hook up that air hose..." You're going uptown! LOL.
Randy Condran Haha you got it :)
Please tell me you get your Honda's underbelly coated!
Just 6 years and that rusty... That is way worse than my 1992 Volvo was before I had mine coated :P
CMDR Sweeper Nope, just drive'em then crush'em
Great video. My van needs the fuel pump changed again. I have to get a new tank and another fuel pump. It damaged 2 pumps in 2 months. The mechanic suggested getting a new tank. Wow!!! an EVAP leak at the fuel pump... I never would of thought... I can imagine that conversation with the customer :)
Stanley Hill Yeah well I hate being the grim reaper but it is what it is ya know.
He game me an idea where to look next. I have a problem with a Hyundai Elantra wish has biting my ass up
The first SMA video I ever watched. Brings a tear to my eye.
Awwww 😥
Hey Dr,loved that shot from above when you blasted the dirt off the tank. And thumbs up for Hanna!
Nick Nicu Yeah it was expensive renting the helicopter but we got it
It is very nice that Europeans do not usually make replaceable U-joints ...Usually you have to replace the whole drive shaft.
Temlertti Ouch that is spendy I bet
I know it was 5' cause I've got a 4 footer and that one is bigger. I'm not sure what to think safety glasses and a cold chisel instead of a screw driver. WTH
@19:14 "Watch your face"

Corky C Yeah I hated chucking it to but what ya gonna do?
Safety glasses brah! Excellent vid!💯
I just used this video today. Thank you!
Great, detailed, video.
Thank you!
Thank you for you videos Sir nice job
Wow eric you work fast you did a great good job i like watching your video picking up more idea 🇵🇭🇺🇸
ok Eric now ya got me scared . that 07 looks way less rusty than my 03 .. I already had the brake likes and fuel lines replaced. Now I gotta look forward to the fuel pump rusting apart. Im in Syracuse ny. my truck only has 65000 miles on it .
+Ed Yager Ps what does this cost , so I dont get sticker shock
What the hell? do they bathe their vehicles in brine up your way? so much rust...
+iceandhotwax u are 100% right they do..
its just amazes me that people bitch about how stuck the fuel disconnects are and yet no one uses any penetrating oil....
one time a fellow tech had a comback after doing a pump cuz it was leaking fuel. Turns out he didint have the line fully cliped on which i didnt know. i lowerd the tank to look a bit and had someone turn the key on and whamo line poped fully off and shot directly into my face but i was wearing safteys which im usually not

Nice to have a helper. I was like wtf, thats not Vanessa. lol
You really don't see many women in technical stuff.
A little silicone spray would help!
Why did you not spray the hole pump top and ring area with the fluid film spray to keep the rust at bay as well as to seal the old metal parts Eric?
you the man !
When delivering auto parts many years ago I never saw a woman working in a garage, saw a midget though, he stood on a milk crate to work on engines.
Your a very good mechanic, but take it from a shade tree, use a little PB Blaster when dealing with your rusted components and wear hearing protection, or you will be deaf before you hit 55......Good Job....
Love the vids my questions is I have a 02 Sierra 2500 with a one plug fuel pump.
I found a deal on a used. 2 plug pump
Can I use this ???
Only original part's
Only original pump
That Chevy going come back as a toyota
Good video, I still can't get over the amount of rust on a 6 year old vehicle. When you were letting the truck down on the lift did I spot a Harbor Freight tool chest in a pro shop?
Also nice of you to give a local youngster a summer job!
Mark Fox Yes sir! Wonderfully made box too. The young boy that helps me out , it is his new box.
Good job. Thanks for the video.
awesome work and video!
Nice job Eric I've got an easy one tomorrow 04 F 150 8.8 rear diff cover weeping due to rust through
Allyn MacLaren Jr Oh yeah we do a few of those each year. Free under coating haha
Darn, I have an 09 and 10 Silverado. I sure hope I don't have to change my fuel pump assembly soon but at least now I know how to do it.
Rick Anderson Step 1, buy a garage with a lift
Sadly enough, that is not an option.
+Rick Anderson Dont take off the bed, tilt the bed.
Briansmobile actually tilted the box without any damage. Quite impressive. I would love to see a door in the bed or cab floor. I guess that would be too easy for engineers to do. Engineers and mechanics gotta get together for coffee.
nonayou damnbusiness Haha it would be a first fight!
Oh yea and we want more Mrs O to because she's awesome sauce!
Bigger pry bar is like using a bigger hammer. If it works use it..
+ItsAlwaysRusty Then get the torch!

we like hanna
The Money Light.
Bruce Pierce Haha yes sir
I love it, "line had to be a weeny" so funny!!!
Too funny! Hanna doesn't even have to bend to clear the truck.

I LOVE your shop dog, and real cutie...............o hell , I just love dogs !!
Txdartaholic Oh wow bummer
Thanks for making this video!
My son (Eli, he's 6) and I were watching this while putting some lego's together. We have skipped back to 5:21 about 57 times now. Funny stuff! I'm just getting into this trade and SMA has been my night school lately. Thanks Teach
