Thank you Decoding Dyslexia CA and Deborah Jacobson for this important conversation! I truly hope that the outcome of this settlement is long-lasting change to reading and English Language Arts instruction in Berkeley USD to benefit all of their students, especially those who have difficulty acquiring literacy. In addition, I hope that school districts throughout California and the nation may use Berkeley's Literacy Improvement Plan as a template to improve their own systems and processes related to ELA instruction. Far better for society for the outcome of the lawsuit to be a template for improvement across the state/nation than to be a template for future lawsuits.

I'm thankful for all the Dyslexia warriors. We all seem to have a similar story. This is a huge win.

Given the expert testimony in the case, by Shinn & Fletcher, it appears that the SELPA's premature adoption of PSW will likely be yet another costly error--just more problem admiration than solution focus. If an intervention has been vetted or shown to be effective as done in MTSS, it's difficult to argue that the offer FAPE was inappropriate. It's unfortunate that CA as a whole hasn't adopted non-categorical IEPs.

What reading screener did BUSD adopt after the settlement?
