Mastering with Elektron’s Analog Heat

  • In this video I explore using an Elektron Analog Heat MKII as a mastering device. Utilising Elektron’s Overbridge software, I demonstrate how you can insert an instance of Analog Heat as a plug in at the front of a processing chain. The AH can provide some gritty attitude or used more subtly as an enhancer. Effective mastering can often benefit from a less is more approach and the Analog Heat allows for careful gain staging so that its effect is carefully applied and subtle. However if you want a more extreme approach, there is plenty of options here. This hardware unit is fabulous for making a lacklustre track sparkle and kick ass. I use it in conjunction with Izotope's industry standard Ozone which handles the heavy lifting of the mastering process allowing the Analog heat to give the song character.

    Nice to see you using it for this purpose. I mastered my new album with this magic device to tame occasional ISP and to enhance brightness. I gained an average of 1 DB of headroom, a touch of glue, nice stereo response and drums sound definitely punchier. Although the follow envelope is really interesting I preferred other devices for proper compression. This is a toy with unlimited applications and I'm glad to see other people starting notice it's potential. You can check how I used it on my album when it'll be released. • @GazWilliams
      @GazWilliams  4 года назад +2

      RUSTiK Inc ooh I have to say that the AH does a great job of adding texture to a sound that is perhaps a little smooth. I have used it extensively in mixing too where it can really make things either bed in or stand out. It’s such a versatile box I’m flummoxed why some people think it’s too expensive. It’s a comparative bargain compared to much outboard and that’s not taking in to account Overbridge.

      RUSTiK Inc the Heat and the Octatrack are so incomparable as they fulfill very different roles. The Octatrack is fantastic but very hard to learn whereas the AH is straightforward and gets instant great results. The Analog Drive is even more simple but is essentially a mono stomp box albeit with eight distortion flavours.

  • @derekcram1698

    Hi Gaz Williams. I tried to contact Elektron but they don't give me an answer. The question is about gain staging.
    It is normal that by using the rear analog L/R inputs (therefore without using overbridge) and by putting the analog heat in bypass (after having adjusted the input to the maximum possible volume), I have a signal in the DAW that reaches the maximum around at -23 dbfs? Even if I activate the analog heat and adjust the output with the level knob I can push the maximum around - 23 dbfs before activating the exclamation point on the output meters. Can't I get a stronger signal out?
    If I push the signal more the exclamation points above the analog heat meters light up. Is it possible to increase the output signal without cutting anything?
    The channel on my apollo x16 is set to +4 dBu and I have no low volume issues with any other external hardware I own to get at least -12 dbfs in my DAW. I just want to know if this is a normal feature of the analog heat fx or I have some problem. Thank you and congratulations for your great work!

    I just got a +fx. when I put it on my track it lower volume about -20db even it's bypassed. they say it's gain staging for headroom but it's very annoying. I can not compare A to B that is Gaz do the whole video because volume is not the same. If you want to get +fx you shoul consider it

      gingabeard they sound very professional and I would certainly use it for high quality results. I guess it may be more of an issue downsampling from 96khz perhaps? I’ll have to try that. I have only worked at 44.1 and 48 with it so far.

      Of course but at about 8x the price. The modulation control and envelopes are nifty though.

    Just dont leave the Analog Heat running for multiple hours or it will start to glitch. At least mine does. Elektron have confirmed to me that it's not a fault with my unit, but a "feature" of Ovebridge 1.

    mastering has a clear output target format. correct me if I missed that, but seems i heard no mention of this here.
    the video is about fiddling about with signal processing. mastering is a specific discipline and not just 'buy this box mr. synth nerd and viola now you are mastering'

  • @jazzjeffjazzjeff

    So.....Its usb in and out? How is this analog processing then. I am confused!

    • @GazWilliams
      @GazWilliams  4 года назад +2

      Jeff Jenkins so if you use it without the Overbridge plug in it’s simply a stereo in and out Analogue unit with no digital conversion however if you use it with the Overbridge plugin there is a D to A conversion so the signal gets processed as an analogue signal before being sent through an A to D and returned back into the computer.

    When I use overbridge with mine, it alway either freezes or won't receive any audio from the DAW after a few seconds of working... Really bothering me as it seems to work fine for you.

    • @GazWilliams
      @GazWilliams  3 года назад +1

      Sorry if it’s obvious to mention but make sure that both the firmware and Overbridge are all fully up to date. It’s far more stable now than it’s ever been.

    The lyrics where you sing you say I'm not your friend,. seems contradictory to who you are, why did you choose to sing that line? not to deter from what you're trying to state in this video; I watched a video on youtube where a guy compared the analog heat to other overdrive type processors like the thermionic culture and an elysia product with the heat,. The elysia karacter totally changed my perception of the analog heat seeing them side by side. Still, what you're mentioning in this video here is completely relevant simply for the fact the prices don't compare between the three products and analog heat is found under $1000 whereas the elysia karacter is over $1000. Good philosophy,. What's the trigger level, looks low?
