    ‪@WeAreElektron‬ if you see this video, adding a dedicated digital soft clipper or limiter would make this device 10x more practical for people both in the hardware and daw world.
    *One thing I forgot to mention which is pretty cool, is that you can use overbridge as a way to run an input to get directly into your daw; just like an interface, except ran through the heat and fx. For me, it means I can seamlessly get sound from my iPad into bitwig without having to use airdrop! That’s pretty nice.
    the alternative would be to allow us to re arrange the analog components to where I can have the actual heat as the last item in the chain and the eq/filter before, although I’m not sure if it’s possible.
    that being said, I’m someone who likes to blow sounds up. and this certainly blows sounds up. let’s play with some bass, a tune I’m working on, and some drums.

    Some of the nicest analogue clipping I have achieved is by overloading the transformer in my DI box. I just have a 20 dollar passive DI box and by boosting the volume going into it to the point where its clipping the signal I get a really nice gooey bottom end and it flattens out the output in the frequency spectrum. I think this works especially well on bass.

    I ran into the same issue with my first elektron box. Seems like a mistake on our part, in hindsight, asking a piece of hardware to do what a DAW can with regards to modular arrangement of FX. The pros, still sounds great with some workarounds, and Elektron is a great company that continues to support their products well after launch. I feel like that’s a hidden value, but I could be on some copium. Like you said, a digital soft clipper or some other digital distortion or saturation is something to cross your fingers for since you can rearrange everything digital. Send that feedback!

    Great video and you made some great points, regarding the mastering setup and the gain staging - increasing the gain in the DAW is usually undesirable because it reduces the SNR and in the process reduces dynamics, you've got such little room to work with that it doesn't make sense to send it out and then back in at the mercy of the DACs and their noise both ways (You're essentially boosting the sound of the noise in the DAC when you boost the DAW's channel, and when using these built-in DACs they can be noisier than higher-end interfaces for example). And to answer the question, yes clippers exist - the pre-amp input gain knob being overdriven on the return is a common choice although that's where quality is very apparent in the interfaces etc, because like I said there's very very little wiggle room. I think this was designed for synth/guitarists to set and forget with light saturation in a chain of other pedals rather than sound designers and heavy-distortion-enjoyers :)

      @shadow_steppin 11 месяцев назад +2

      Not sure if I entirely agree that this is is more aimed at synth players or guitarists rather than heavy distortion enjoyers, I've met plenty of people in the Drum and Bass production scene that swear by the Analog Heat, as well as I personally know a few noise musicians that use the Analog Heat as their final distortion that the whole track goes through.

    • @TheAlburp
      @TheAlburp 11 месяцев назад

      That's definitely the simplest way to use it, just set and forget on a send or a mixbus for gentle excitation, though the LFOs and the other modulation options that it has actually makes it viable for sound design and some cool experimental stuff :D it also sounds pretty good in a master chain, but yeah the gain staging gets a bit finicky

    Finally a video of someone actually using this box to properly crunch up some stuff, this is exactly the use case for which I'm interested in it. Also maybe I'm coping because I want this, and of course it's not apples to apples with the Tube-Culture because the plugin is emulating a special type of tube distortion, but somehow I feel like the analog distortion has more weight to it, and the plugin feels just a bit "boxy" with a more harsh high end (which might be due to aliasing with such extreme distortion levels). As always difficult to describe audio with words but I do feel like heavy distortion is the one area where analog still actually sounds noticeably better than digital. I agree that the price point is pretty heavy though, however it should be mentioned that besides the analog circuitry and the DSP chip, this thing is also a fully functioning audio interface with 2 ins and 2 outs, so there is a lot in there for the price. Anyways, great video thank you for the examples and comparisons :)

    • @Alckemy
      @Alckemy  4 месяца назад

      I use the heat pretty often both as a means to sample external stuff with saturation or as a matter of using it via overbridge. It can do lots of cool things since it is super flexible in hooking stuff up. It can still get harsh, but it does really well with “lorn” kinds of sounds
